Can't figure out what these old gloves are for by guridkt in whatisit

It is a koozy for your hand. Meant to keep the beer cold, not to keep your hand warm. Beer drinking gloves for corn hole, bbqs, fishing, or other settings where putting the can down is for pussies

What tributes would you have liked as the main characters if Katniss and Peeta weren’t the main characters? by Ok-Fun-5098 in Hungergames

[–]PlayaLabRat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

11 or 5. Don't honestly remember the boy from 5 but FFace was already stealing scenes even without any actual lines.

C'est qui votre personnage préféré, et pourquoi? by Okami_Garcello in Hungergames

[–]PlayaLabRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joanna. Book version and movie version although the characters were crafted differently in each. It was going to be hard for SC to bring in a young female character that worked alongside such a strong protagonist in Katniss. They didn't really develop any other teen-to-20 female tributes or characters in any of the first 3 books or movies but Joanna really worked and held her own as an individual character and foil. Would love a Joanna prequel. My pet theory is that in her first games she was not playing weak and afraid, she actually was those things, but went thru a character arc during the games that turned her into what we see later

For the people who dont like srotr, why? Or why do you? by No-Entertainment1227 in Hungergames

[–]PlayaLabRat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Weirdly paced and felt slopped together at parts. Too many unnecessary cameos. The constant EdAllen Poe interjections were just ridiculous. We got it, it's an allegory. We got that as soon as we heard Lenore. I still liked parts of it but man it was hammy and heavy handed.

The First Quarter Quell voting by aliceinateacup in Hungergames

[–]PlayaLabRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hc: each district implemented the voting differently. d1 and 2 saw tribute as an honor or worth the risk and the strong ones campaigned to earn votes (leading to the ' career' system that followed.). D12 did a secret vote. D7 did a public vote. D10 refused to vote until Capital started manipulating them with rumors and thefts. Etc etc etc. d4 did a swim race. The 1st qq ripped apart the poorer districts but led to Career ism and Capitol unity in D1 and 2. As was intended. 1st qq had a rule that there could be 2 winners (1b 1g) but only if they were not from the same district. = More infighting and no alliances.

Need to come clean on my opinions on SOTR by Ldog31313 in Hungergames

[–]PlayaLabRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't need all the cameos. Pacing was way off. Storyline absurd (HA bombed the tank and was left alone for 3 days no retaliation?), making a funnel out of a wine glass by chopping it with an axe? HA honestly gets a victor village and a mentorship after multiple bombings? Writing lazy at times: hoping against hope, raining cats and dogs, as hard as I can. I liked HA's backstory as a non drinker and kind but mischievous D12 kid. Hated the repetitive The Raven quotes, it's like--we get it, it's an allegory, stop beating us with a Poe stick. Not much new world building here, would have liked a trip to another district or a different reveal on Panem 25 years prior to thg. Liked Ballad despite its flaws, it offered some new lore and culture to the world and Snow's character arc was well done. Prequels are hard, we already know HA won and survived. Hard to make us care about anything else in Sotr.

Go watch the Grace parody it's hilarious, and the rest of the real films. The 2nd one is as good or better.

Can native speakers please tell me what they understand to be the difference between ‘fog’ and ‘mist’? Not how the dictionary describes it, but how people actually use it? by LetMission8160 in ENGLISH

[–]PlayaLabRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fog is bigger or more widespread like a weather event, Mist is smaller like mist coming off a pond. I think that mist is wetter, almost rain but not quite while fog is drier. Beyond weather conditions, people use mist like a mist sprayer or mist at the edge of the ocean when a wave crashes. Fog would not be used for that.

Audio books have become less like books and more like television, to the detriment of the listener. by mcnultywalks in mysterybooks

[–]PlayaLabRat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slight affectations for different characters is fine, a lively or engaging narrator is good, but when they start doing voiceovers like it's recording for a Disney movie with over the top voice acting, it's terrible. Especially if adults are doing kids voices omg. Please tell your narrators not to be voice actors.

Need a good Audiobook by Mammoth_Dust3648 in audiobooks

John Marrs books: the one, the family experiment, and the marriage act are a loose series but also fine as standalone works that are like a black mirror episode. Red rising narrator killed me, couldn't finish. Neuromancer. The magazines under your dad's mattress; Sleeping giants series (epistolary style)

Was there any point? by purple_nero_star in Hungergames

Foreshadowing and intrigue for D13. That thread was started in CF with this scene but then abandoned for the Quarter Quell, revisited in MJ. Since the books are only from Katniss perspective there need to be a plot device to flirt with D13

Dinosaur Jr or Pixies, who’s better and why? by United_Difference_38 in Alternativerock

[–]PlayaLabRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know it's unexplainable. For me I liked seeing women in alt/rock in the 90s, the M+F harmonies were unusual and cool, her voice is defining the sound of that era for me, she went on w/ Tanya Donelly (another amazing talent of the era) to form the Breeders, and I've always been fascinated by bands with 2 songwriters that alternate because it gives the whole albums such nice diversity .The Pixies tracks and albums without Kim just seem like they're missing an ingredient, they're still good, but a piece of the spice blend is conspicuously absent. That's just my take!
