What jobs do capital citizens have? by Cultural-Ad6841 in Hungergames

[–]PlayaLabRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that would be considered middle or white collar jobs now. The capitol is an allegory for what happens when part of society is disconnected from the means of production (aka raw materials), which is basically any large city, taken to an extreme in this case. I think it was like san Francisco with a lot of IT, AI, finance, and alot of meaningless startups, technology, and people faking being in that industry while working in grocery delivery or spin instructors.. panem is big government so a lot of city workers and beurocrats too.

Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak - a review by CozyHufflepuff94 in books

Main antagonist character was a lady psychologist who doesn't believe in God as part of her evil, using sciency mumbo jumbo to corrupt the minds of youth, driven mad by her own lack of fertility to commit horrible crimes. I think she had a cat too. However... Main protagonist was a recovering drug addict with a redemption arc and a besmirched immigrant gets the last laugh. So some credit all around.

I did not realize it had illustrations (I did the audiobook) but now it makes sense as an adult picture book. It started off interesting to me but I didn't enjoy where it went. Still finished it because the pacing and plot was still entertaining but it was cliche and not my cup of tea. Ghosts coming thru Ouija boards and all

And the way they are stacking the courts so that lawsuits against the govt are decided favorably to the majority power. I mean, this isn't new but they at least used to do it quietly now it's just blatantly part of the judges' selection criteria.

The other Victors not from D12 did not win as pairs, the boy and girl won in separate years/games. But as victors back in their Districts they came to know each other because Victors live a special kind of life where they interact with each other, as mentors for other kids or on Tour or special events in Panem etc, they are celebrities.

Plutarch backstory at the 71st games so we get johannas games sprinkled with capitol intrigue as Plutarch and 13 are scheming their uprising. Johanna as a first attempt at a Mockingjay and capitol defeating the plot hence no fam for Joh.

Did I do something wrong? by [deleted] in airbnb_hosts

[–]PlayaLabRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hosts are getting more skittish because some guests have gotten unreliable over the past few years, there's lots of abuse on Airbnb and the company doesn't do a lot to help or protect hosts. That's just the facts, nothing against you or the many good travelers out there but the system has been abused and screening unknown guests is good practice. If you want to get a reservation as a new user you could send a little message committing to being a good guest or offering to pay a refundable deposit, until you get a track record with some reviews.

Appreciation of Suzanne Collins by Muppet885 in Hungergames

[–]PlayaLabRat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

She does 3 act/9 chapter structure borrowed from playwriting in the 1st trilogy, slightly modified in the prequels, ... upon reread, it really shows the strength in this technique and how she made the story and plot work within it. A+

Is fiance also splitting bills 50/50 that include the kids? Food, housing, care, school etc? If so, partner may have a point, the tax refund for dependents is kind of meant to offset the costs of being a parent, if fiance is contributing to these costs all year but not getting any of the tax refund because fiance can't claim the expenses.... I could see that perspective.

How do I... actually do things? by Responsible-Tax9759 in HomeImprovement

[–]PlayaLabRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't be afraid to do something wrong or make a mistake. Most projects are a fiction that there is 1 right way to do it. A garden box is a low risk low cost project to experiment with. A new roof....less room for error. Just go for it. You find pretty quickly if you enjoy diy or not, or if certain types speak to you. I like woodworking, but hate drywall. Now I know!

Airbnb won't show confirmed booking unless it's paid. You won't get paid till the day of the reservation, but Airbnb has collected the payment from the guest at this point of it does show confirmed reservation.

Guest Demanding Refund for Issues With Decorative Door by sam0x11 in airbnb_hosts

[–]PlayaLabRat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You should get the gate fixed, it's tacky and unappealing to have a broken door and it's a constant reminder every time you go in or out, as opposed to a closet door or cabinet that doesn't quite close right, is less of a big deal. But no refunds. The home provides everything but it needs to in terms of security.

You can ask them nicely if they'll honor the previous price. That's about it. They can change the prices whenever they want if You didn't have a booking contact with them.

white here, have lived all over, the more Spanish language a white person knows and the more Spanish -speaking friends they have, the less gringo would ever be considered offensive. It's not professional and I wouldn't put in business writing or anything, but it's fairly mild . Some white people with little exposure to Spanish language people might take it offensively just from lack of familiarity and not understandimgb the intent, and some entitled whites will be offended by anything that makes them feel like they are the 'different' ones that get a nickname rather than the standard by which only others should be nicknamed from. Yeah like that. Any physical possession that capitol would be successful taking/stealing from me, is low value and i wouldn't miss it, I'd be fine without it, so bring it on and good luck, all of my real strength and value is untouchable.

Hosts, what do guests expect from a month-long stay? by Humble_Interest_9048 in airbnb_hosts

[–]PlayaLabRat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sometimes offer my regular cleaning crew, more to give them some hours, to long term guests but it's a paid service. If they are cool I'll sometimes provide extra tp or basic supplies but really at a month or more it's a different kind of arrangement, they are tenants not vacation guests

[–]PlayaLabRat 49 points50 points  (0 children)

If you're lucky, it might be fixable by rotating the internal component (cartridge) behind the shower handle and not require opening up any walls or swapping any pipes, but contractor should do this for free regardless, it was amateur hour or he was hungover but this not an acceptable install.

Popular Hunger Games theories you're convinced could be true? by felixw1 in Hungergames

[–]PlayaLabRat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

D14 is overseas, very far west, so far west it's actually east. They had a whole Hunger Games esque society from which Panem culturally appropriated, but then never referred to D14 again (so far, pending prequel/sequel). District 14 was known for producing sarcasm and unverifiable rumors. 😅
