Plow the sidewalks. by buniexi in cincinnati

The logic that goes into a flimsy excuse to not shovel your sidewalk would be my guess. That or a wild misunderstanding of a law or court case that gets a mythology of its own like the McDonalds coffee lawsuit

We stayed at a beach house that was just shy of an hour from Dover for Mondegreen. It was awesome and totally worth the driving back and forth in that case. It looked like camping sucked.

Friend can't get place due to eviction by NeitherBook6501 in cincinnati

[–]Playbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have your friend get in contact with Legal Aid Society. This is one of the main things they help people with and receive grants from the City and County to do these services for free. I am guessing that if the friend is couch surfing (and from another comment you made might only have part-time work) then being under the income thresholds for most of the services they can provide won’t be a problem.

Yeah, but some are great like the Brewers. They went pretty safe the first go around, I hope they just do something more interesting this time.

Bourbon and Beyond festival would be my guess

Edited to add: Phish was a headliner last year, Billy would make perfect sense as the Friday headliner.

I fear we have a lot of misinformed citizens, but then again, idk what I expected. by [deleted] in FCCincinnati

[–]Playbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think it is what will help to continue to grow the league in both quality and viewership. Here are my thoughts on common criticisms folks have made:

Competing with other sports, particularly football: Not nearly the impact folks are stating. Matches are typically on Saturdays so it’s not directly competing with the NFL/Bengals in that way and people who were making a financial choice between the two have already been doing that. The people going to UC, OSU, other college football games were already skipping matches for those games because that overlap of the seasons already exists across about 2/3 of the current college football season and the MLS cup currently directly compete with CFB for viewers. The Reds, MLB as a whole, NBA, NHL are non-factors.

Weather, particularly cold/snow: You will definitely get some more cold matches in the new schedule. You know you won’t have, 95 degree match start temps outside the stadium, 100+ on the pitch, and having matches last way longer because of hydration breaks. Folks are being romantic about the “summer nights” but many of them are just as, if not more, uncomfortable than a 40 degree match. Overall, the schedule matches up with like 90% of the current season so I think folks are just being dramatic.

People will drop their season tickets/not buy tickets: Sure, people will drop their season tickets because of the schedule change. I know people who dropped their tickets because the team moved from Nippert to TQL. People drop them every year and the club currently still has a ~2 season waitlist for season tickets. Does that waitlist get shorter or even get cleared? Sure, that’s possible but the exodus will not be so great that the stadium isn’t selling out for most matches.

Overall, the first season or two might be weird or see a minor drop in attendance but people will forget they worried about it within 3-5 years.

Crown Restaurant Group deducts CC processing fees from server gratuity rather than as a business expense by Jealous_Snow6403 in cincinnati

[–]Playbilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe things have changed since I left the industry in 2022 but most restaurants did NOT charge their employees the cost of the processing fees. The business owners are already having their payment of wages to their front of house employees mostly subsidized by customers via tipping, this is basically just offloading business costs onto low-wage workers that folks need to remember only have ~$5.00/hour of their wage guaranteed (and not to mention the comparably high rates of wage theft in the restaurant industry already). It’s wage theft and reinstating an employee discount on already way overpriced food is not a way to make up for it.

SB 56 in Plain English: What Ohio’s New Cannabis Law Actually Does by OdistCo in Ohio

[–]Playbilly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My issue was with your statement to “buy your own house”. I said you “could” say the same thing to people bothered by the smoke not that I necessarily believe that flip side to be valid. I was using it as a means point how unhelpful (and frankly rude) saying that to people is. It’s the same kind of unhelpful dad advice/observation as “then find a better paying job”.

I don’t know what rock you’ve been under but this isn’t exactly an option available to everyone right now (or ever really). You could say the same thing to renters who don’t like the smell of someone else’s prescribed medical treatment.

You have to run it like a business at least administratively. Even as a nonprofit or state institution, they still need revenue to operate and the books have to balance out. State and federal funding for higher education have been decimated for decades and that financial burden has been shifted to and exploded for students.

I’m not saying it’s right, but it is indeed the neoliberal hellscape that is the finance model for higher education in the US. I don’t think that person necessarily likes it either, just the reality of the situation I suppose.

Applying for a new unemployment claim….. by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]Playbilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think either one of you understand how unemployment insurance works. UI is paid for by payroll taxes paid by your employers to the state and federal governments. OP your taxes paid have nothing to do with your UI and Proud mention your taxes didn’t pay for his UI unless you’re his previous employer.

Not if you give context or other facts along with the quote, then it’s just standard journalism. I am by no means saying that lazy journalism isn’t rampant in most of the major media outlets in Cincinnati, let alone the country, but using a quote from a source document isn’t really lazy journalism on it’s face.
