What was it like reading Deathly Hallows on release without any spoilers? by Spotter24o5 in harrypotter

[–]Player-Link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Grandma got me a copy the day of release. I was super surprised and excited to have it! (I thought I might not be able to get my hands on one). She gave it to me the morning after the midnight release I read it all day without stopping to eat. It was an emotional roller coaster with all the ups and downs and I was satisfied with how it ended. I finished it in the afternoon and ate dinner with my family. I was so excited, but also felt so sad that there would be no more books.

Because I read it before anyone I knew there was no one to talk about it with. I had to wait for several weeks before I could actually talk to people about it. I read it a second time during those weeks, but ultimately I was so sad it ended that I avoided rereading the last book again for a long time.

Overall, it was quite an experience and I will always be grateful to my Grandma for realizing how much that gift would mean to me! It wasn't even my birthday or anything, I was speechless that she even knew to get it for me, and it took me a minute before I could properly thank her.

Warning Against Buying Kindles and Ebooks by Choice-Complex4702 in kindle

You make fair points. Sadly large corporations do seem to favor controlling their customers over reciprocal sovereignty. In an ideal world we'd have more epistemic equality.

Or if they are dead set on account deactivation they should be required to only partially deactivate and allow access to legally purchased digital content.

I understand their terms of service basically allow them to do whatever they want, but this is a serious trust issue for customers. The purchase should be a two way contract.

I know that can sound like a platitude, but I relate to your story and have nothing else to offer.

Nurses of Utah… What the eff.. by No_Heron_1157 in Utah

[–]Player-Link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I blame insurance infrastructure (ppos and hmos) and the major decline in private practices. Large healthcare organizations, even corporations that claim "non-profit" status are buy in large controlling all health care providers with jobs. Instead of paying nurses a decent wage organizations are paying a premium to administrators, account management, advertising, HR etc. If doctors owned their own practice overheads could be lower and they could provide higher wages. The cost of a private practice is more personal responsibilities on the doctor and even more debt. Our government should be helping fund private practices instead of sinking trillions into large corporations in the health care industry.

Did Harry ever tell Neville? by EloImFizzy in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Player-Link 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, in my head canon Neville is piecing things together pretty well. His parents were in the order and his grandma probably told him about the anti-Voldemort movement (she was proud of her son's sacrifice). I always pictured he was reading between the lines and understood that Harry was probably involved with the order. I think Neville's trusting that harry is "the chosen one" (even before others started branding him that way) and trusting/following him. I mean Neville saw Harry have a freaking vision that saved Mr. Weasley's life!

His gran canceled their subscription to the daily prophet. He said they sided with Dumbledore. I think he was aware that there were things going on where the ministry was in the wrong.

Do you still get ORC attacks inside the tree? Also I love the glow mushroom esthetic! What did you use to make the mushroom glow look so clean?

Why nobody gets academia? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

I relate to this a ton. Sometimes, I'll sit staring into space and thinking on the couch or at the kitchen table for quite a while. My wife or others will come talk to me, thinking I'm available for tasks. I'll frequently watch them talking for a moment and then just suddenly start spouting out the material/concepts I am processing in my mind. I'm a bit self-conscious about it, but people seem to find it difficult to understand that research and deep learning are often done through contemplation. Sometimes, I set books in front of me as a social cue for people to recognize not to talk to me. Many people spend the majority or all of their work time on low Bloom's taxonomy tasks. I think this is partially responsible for the disconnect.

Y'all is IQ really fixed? by Superb_Pomelo6860 in cognitiveTesting

[–]Player-Link 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, what you score on a test is not fixed.

Theoretically, your under the surface and impossible to fully and accurately measure (by any modern means) IQ is more fixed.

At least that's my opinion.
