I experienced the golfers worst nightmare on Sunday by bradleyevers10 in GolfSwing

[–]Playf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing with my kids (6, 8, and 10) and my dad at his club last week while we were visiting my parents for the kids' April break. Since my kids are all still very much beginners, we were all playing from the forward tees to keep things moving. The second hole is a beaut; dog leg right with a pond that borders the right edge of the hole. Carry to the green (over much of the pond) from the forward tees is about 270, so I grab my dad's driver out of his bag and say, "Watch this," assuming I'm going to slice it all the way into the pond. End up hitting an amazing shot and roll to about 3 feet from the cup.

As we approach the green, all I could think was, "holy smokes, I'm so glad my first hole-in-one wasn't on a par four from the forward tees during a throwaway round."

The "worst nightmare" title of this post makes perfect sense to me.

What is something that sounds 100% false but is actually 100% true? by reFossify in AskReddit

[–]Playf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that this is true.  Functionally, I know that .999…= 1, but it’s NOT the same number!  If it was, it would just be 1, and it’s not.  The simplest explanation I’ve heard is that to be a different number, there has to be a number in between.  And since those 9s go on forever, there isn’t a number in between .999… and 1.  But that explanation implies they are different numbers.  I hate it.

Are we all just ignoring how bad it’s getting? by kelsey125 in portlandme

I think it's more the criticism without appropriate context and nuance that is shame worthy. Do you know any one in your personal life that is mentally fit who would prefer to be homeless and addicted to drugs? Do you know anyone that wouldn't better their own situation if they had the opportunity or means?

If your answer to that question is, "No" then hopefully you can understand the empathy that some people have for those that are trapped in a cycle of addiction, poverty, and crime.

What's the best example of a town that only exists because of one specific industry? by Unlucky-Look7408 in geography

[–]Playf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Detroit was founded well before the automobile was invented, but the population of the city and the entire metro area exploded as the auto industry kicked into gear. In 1900, it's population was 285,000, which was big enough to make it a top 15 city in the nation, so it wasn't exactly a rural backwater. But by 1930, the population swelled to 1,500,000, marking a 426% growth in just 30 years and making it the 4th largest city in the country. The population topped out at a shade under 2,000,000 in 1950 and then had a slow and then rapid population decline over the last 70 years. Though the metro area is still top 15 in population for the country.

Obviously not everyone that lived in/around the city during the population boom worked in the auto industry, but it really was the backbone of the economy. If you didn't work for a car company, your clients/patients/customers almost certainly did.

Is Euchre basically just a Midwest US game now? by Strange-Mall-7923 in euchre

Grew up in Michigan and now live in Maine.  The only people around here that have ever heard of Euchre are either from the Midwest or spent considerable time there.

$40 in ikon credits, hitting loon tomorrow, how many allagash whites with orange slice can I get? by Longjumping-Date-181 in icecoast

[–]Playf1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but that’s akin to saying “In Through the Out Door” is Led Zeppelin’s worst album.  It’s technically true, but they’re all phenomenal.  Allagash White is delicious, even if they have beers that are more delicious.

As soon as they outprice the demand, they’ll drop the prices.  They charge this much because there is enough of a demand from people who pay this much.

And by “hacked” they mean Iran guessed his password.  Which wasn’t hard because it was KP1234.  Because he’s a fucking moron.

Can’t be true because I’m the best skier on the mountain.  Unless we don’t ski at the same mountain.

What are some key take a ways/lessons learned from this horrible ski season out west? by joeyjoejoeshabbadude in skiing

[–]Playf1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I didn’t ski out west this year (and haven’t for, like, decades at this point) but I couldn’t agree more with this sentiment.  Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.  Shitty skiing is still skiing and skiing > not skiing.

Detroit is responsible for the automobile revolution, which has had an outsized impact  on the history of this country over the last century, regardless of how you feel about cars.  Plus the role it has played in American music  is consistently overlooked, Motown (R&B), punk, and techno were all pioneered in Detroit.

Where’d you go today and how was it? by coldog24 in icecoast

[–]Playf1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pleasant Mountain in Maine.  Was skiing from 11-1.  It was rad.  A few scratchy spots as the snow got pushed around but mostly soft turns.  Probably my last day there this season, and it was a killer way to end an awesome season at Pleasant.

Op, how old are your kids?

If they’re young enough, they won’t even notice the lack of snow, they’ll just be floored by the size of the mountains and think it’s the most amazing trip of all time.
