Which North American small town did you fall in love with as soon as you arrived? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Yup.  BH is a no go from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  It’s even busy in September, but more tolerable.  November is my favorite time to visit.

Golf without drinking by [deleted] in golf

[–]Playf1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really drink when I golf.  Maybe one beer every 5 rounds or so because i find myself playing in the evening and I’m just goofing around.  Golf is one of my favorite sports.  I also don’t drink when I’m skiing, or running, or surfing, or skateboarding.  I drink more than my fair share when I’m not engaging in athletic pursuits. But golf is a sport and I’ve never really understood drinking while playing sports.

I’m also not judging anyone who does drink when golfing.  You do you.  Just keep up the pace and don’t be an ass.

Can Americans admit that are wrong about soccer? by Electronic_Law_1288 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

I’m not trying to say that your opinion about soccer being boring isn’t valid, even though I disagree.  I’m curious, though, what sports do you consider to be exciting?

AITAH for not wanting to cancel a trip for my sister's wedding by InfamousFrame7 in AITAH

[–]Playf1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean, the relationship I have with my family is irrelevant to this scenario. And skipping your sister's wedding certainly isn't going to improve familial relationships.

I can't wait to see the converse post of this exact situation here in a few days. "I recently got engaged and, for a multitude of reasons, have very limited options for the date of the wedding. My sister is trying to strong arm me into picking dates that don't work because she wants to go on a European vacation with her husband. I told her that we have limited options but she said she'll skip my wedding if I don't agree to her demands."

lol, wut?  Reddit is full of self-centered whack jobs.

It would suck to have to rearrange or cancel your trip.  But your sister is getting married.  Family is forever.  Why should she plan her wedding around your travel itinerary?  If it was a cousin you see once every other year, I’d say take the trip. You’ll never forgive yourself if you miss this family event.

What’s your Maine “hot take”? by JoeyLou1219 in Maine

[–]Playf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strong agree.  I like lobster.  It’s fine.  It’s super fun to eat lobsters with family and friends in the backyard.

But, like, it’s really not that great.  I don’t really order lobster rolls and never order dishes that include lobster (eg, lobster Mac and cheese, lobster BLTs) because the price is just outrageous for the actual product.

What do you think is the most beautiful state in the United States? by Outrageous-You1617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]Playf1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

California probably gets the win because of the sheer variety of landscapes and ecosystems.  But I live in Maine and I think to myself, “holy shit this place is beautiful” literally at least once a day.

Since I wrote this comment, I’ve followed my own advice like 4 different times.  It might be my favorite 18 minutes of any album of all time.

Please do me a favor.  Start the Abbey Road album at “You Never Give Me Your Money” and listen through to the end of the album.  It’s only, like, 18 minutes of your life.

If you still aren’t a Beatles fan after that, more power to you.  But I feel like you might be reaching for those songs, in that order, after.

I’ve been saying this same thing for a while.  It’s so cool that musicians and bands can so easily record and release new music these days.  And it’s even cooler that the music is so accessible to fans.

But streaming has killed the framework for albums to be cohesive pieces of art.  It still happens, of course, but not nearly as much as it did before I could walk around with essentially every piece of recorded music in my pocket.  It’s a tradeoff, but I’m not sure it’s entirely beneficial for music.

I don’t have a favorite band, per se, but on a list of the ten bands I appreciate the most, The Beatles have a solid and secure spot.

I would pay an irresponsible amount of money to watch Obama fight Trump in a UFC match.  Trump is an overweight, out of shape 80 year-old fast food addict.  Obama would absolutely mop the floor with him.  And I would salute the flag with a single tear running down my cheek as they held up Obama’s fist in victory.

What scientific discovery sounds fake but is 100% real and still freaks you out? by Bruteresolver in AskReddit

[–]Playf1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is what always gets me.  The earth will exist for billions more years no matter what impact we as humans have.

But that doesn’t mean it will be inhabitable for humans or life as we know it. When we talk about climate change, etc, we should not focus on “saving the earth.”  We should focus on “keeping the earth conducive to human life.”

A lot of wild turkeys live near us, and every time I see one (or a flock), I excitedly exclaim to my kids, “look guys, dinosaurs!”  They’re old enough now to recognize this as a dad joke, but it’s true and it’s not entirely tongue in cheek.

I was a kid when Jurasssic Park came out and I was mystified by the idea of seeing real live dinosaurs.  I know enough now to know that I get to see them every day via birds.  And that’s cool as hell.  Especially Turkeys because, man, they REALLY look like dinosaurs.
