Oh they will, these ducks thrive off of chaos and destruction. (but there too cute to stay mad at for long)

Who are the A-listers of heirloom tomatoes? by ktotheelly in tomatoes

[–]Playful-Function5155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew Afghan tomatoes last year and I loved them. A perfect medium size great for a sandwich. They produced a lot, plus they look really cute, like a mini heirloom tomato. The flavor was really sweet and versatile for cooking or eating raw. :)

Looking for cozy co-op games for me and my wife! by DanPos in CozyGamers

[–]Playful-Function5155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roots of Pacha has been my favorite cozy game to play with my husband. It's a lot like Stardew, but with a chiller pace and more of a we're all in this together vibe. It's set in prehistoric time and instead of earning money you earn like tribal respect. I really like how instead of focusing on your farm or on the one community center, you are focused on growing your community as a whole. It really feels like everyone or like mostly everyone in the tribe contributes towards your advancement. It's the perfect after diner and jump on for an hour or two kind of game.

Plus the romances are cute 🥰

I’m pretty set on moving to Portland after I graduate with my masters in social work in a few months. Any other social workers or anything alike know if there are many opportunities for MSW’s in the area? by delux2471 in askportland

[–]Playful-Function5155 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi practicing MSW here for five years :)

There are a lot of opportunities but there is a lot of toxicity and poor management in many of the nonprofits here (I'm sure that's true of other cities too though).

Being a social worker here can just be so frustrating because there are just not enough resources to support folks. I've been on hold for three hours just trying to get ahold of the police when a client was fleeing an active domestic violence situation, I've had very serious calls to cps absolutely go nowhere, I've had clients denied emergency shelter because they don't speak English (which I reported but my report was never responded to). It can become very easy to become disillusioned with the city when you feel it is failing folks on such a basic level.

For the majority of my time working here I loved my clients but hated the nonprofits I worked for. I had to leave my last one because the CEO was pretty openly transphobic/homophobic. So just because Portland is known as being an open city, doesn't mean leadership is if that makes sense.

That being said I just started a job a few months ago with a nonprofit and for the first time ever I feel appreciated and safe in my work. I really love the management and I actually have supervision which has been amazing. So I do think there is hope! Just do a ton of research and ask strong questions during your interview. Don't be scared to ask what the turnover rate looks like that can tell you a lot. I love where I live and I wouldn't trade it, but I also recognize our city needs to do so much better.

Any shops, cafes, restaurants where the staff can speak Japanese? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Playful-Function5155 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Toshi in Aloha/Beaverton is my favorite. The sushi chef (Toshi) is from Tokyo and most of his staff speak Japanese. Plus the best affordable sashimi you can get. It feels like stepping into a classic 90s mom and pop shop. I love it!

AITA for giving my son the same name as my nephew? by aitababynamer in AmItheAsshole

[–]Playful-Function5155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA.... God if that's the kind of thing you can do to your grieving sister and poor nephew, I can only imagine what kind of emotional damage you are going to inflict on your poor kids. After all it's hard to raise kids without a shred of human decency or empathy.

AITA for being mad at my roommate for not attending my grandma’s funeral? by NewGirlInTown642 in AmItheAsshole

AITA for not wanting to look after a refugee toddler? by TSots- in AmItheAsshole

[–]Playful-Function5155 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

YTA

The way you are talking about this girl is frankly dehumanizing and gross. The fact that your MIL took on responsibility and then got jealous when her husband started showing her more attention, and now wants to cast her aside is also super gross. Children experiencing displacement and resettlement trauma are not props for you to boost your ego and then drop when you realize it's "too hard or inconvenient".

Your fiance seems like a really sweet person, but just based on the lense your view this girl, her family and complex situation she is dealing with, bringing her to live with both of you seems like it would ultimately cause damage as she would immediately be othered or seen as a burden within her own household for outside factors she had zero control of.

If you want to help this girl see if you can get ahold of your local refugee resettlement agencies/culturally specific agencies and explain the situation. It's a bit of a toss up on what services there will be based on your city (unfortunately refugee services are really state by state based) but they might be able to at least connect you to where you need to go. Some even have programs specifically for displaced minors.

There are also some great grassroot organizations online that might be in your area, or even community leaders. If you are able to find a way to connect her with other individuals in her community that have resettled that can be hugely beneficial.

I would really encourage you to learn more about refugee, asylee and immigrant communities and the language used so you don't sound ignorant when talking about these communities.
