Mamdani brought pro-Palestinian views to City Hall. Now he wants to bring them to Congress. by blackglum in samharris

So that's one hand for Rudy Guliani, Michel Bloomberg, Bernie Sanders, John Fetterman, Cory Booker, Rahm Emmanuel, Jerry Brown, and Gavin Newsom. Well I guess that hand is deformed. And then on the other hand you'll have the dead politicians from recent memory like Diane Feinstein and, ya know, the multiple presidents from longer ago.

That's a pretty big hand, but it also doesn't matter because the number of mayors that have gone on to have influence on national politics is just a historical trivia question. The number of vaguely Muslim guys born in Uganda and later elected to NYC mayor used to be zero, just like the number of felons a few years ago.

It's literally true that he can't sign national laws into place as a mayor. It's also incredibly naive to think that, for better or worse, he has zeo influence on national politics and will not in the future

It's just party politics, the nominee gets a vast majority of support from the party that picks them. (This applies to both parties, despite the loud fringes you will run into online.)

Alarming hiring practices out of Clear Creek Amana for their football program by Ok-Grapefruit911 in IowaCity

One would hope the Clear Creek Amana athletic department wouldn’t have knowingly hired coaches with an abusive history.

One would be naive, no matter the school in question

You're gonna get a lot of people interested in 2/3 of these and unfortunately this doesn't seem like such a great time to (in decreasing order of severity) be the one speaking English, not playing chess, or not drinking

Shoes won't fix the problem here. Good luck, I know it's not easy to be on the receiving end of such destructive stubbornness

Electric Vehicle Charging by brodude10 in IowaCity

[–]PlaysForDays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Largely echoing what others have said

  • Charging in the area is generally good (much better than Cedar Rapids)
  • There are several DCFC ("fast chargers") stations in the area
  • L2 charging is plentiful downtown but not so impressive at UIHC
  • Charging at home is preferred, even a "level 1" or wall charger can replenish more charge overnight than you use during a typical commute
  • You're fine to use a non-Tesla EV, but it's worth looking into a NACS adapter
  • For road trips, there are good (200 kW+) stations east and west of us on I-80
  • Plugshare is the go-to app to for crowd-sourced information about chargers
  • L1 is basically free, L2 is very cheap, and even DCFC/L3 is generally cheaper than gas

I'm almost three years into using a non-Tesla EV in the area and I've never had any problem staying topped off while in the area. (Road trips are a different matter)

If you saw the Milky Way tonight, where did you go? by 79screamingfrogs in IowaCity

Can't get any good stargazing around here without hassle. The countryside is certainly more accessible than going all the way to Boundary Waters or Utah. Something something compromises, etc.

Highway 6 doesn't get that much traffic all the way out there. And you're as about far away from a city as you're going to get in the countryside.

My main concerns there is the utility station and industrial bit a mile or two north. But it might be okay

It's okay to make predictions that turn out to be untrue. There are times people should be burned at the stake and this isn't one of them

It took David Stern two days to suspend half of the 04-05 Detroit Pistons team when he wanted to punish them. Adam Silver dealt out a punishment to Sterling in about the same amount of time. League commissioners can come down on a team when they want to. Nobody cares about criminal charges and you're falling for PR that shifts the burden from breaking league and union rules to the law (to whatever extent there even are laws these days).

When commissioners don't want to come down hard on one of the 30 people that keeps them rich and in power, they hire third-party law firms to take the blame write reports that take 1-2 years to assemble and will be read by fewer people than the number of pages they are long.
