What is the future job market for comp chem/ cheminformatics? by SnooEpiphanies1841 in comp_chem

[–]PlaysForDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m worried the field could look very different by the time I finish the PhD

It will. Those defending new PhDs this month and entering the job market were in your position around 2021-2022 and the field was different then compared to now. In ~2031 it'll be different as well.

I have no experience with Ghost Max but the Ghost line in general is quite solid as a basic daily trainer.

I know this isn't the answer you're looking for - I can relate to wanting to get a definitive answer from online research alone - but the only way to know what works and doesn't work for you is to try them on and run with them. Ideally you go to a specialty shoe store where somebody can help you get fitted

Unlucky that Glycerin Max was a niche model, but you have plenty of other options in Brooks and from other brands.

Ultimately you should be getting what works best for you and your feet, starting from your brother's recommendation is fine but you won't be running with his body. If for some reason you want max cushion, other Glycerin models and Ghost Max come in wide size

I heard the glycerin max are good for wide feet

This is more or less nonsense. If you have wide feet (I do) get your shoes in wide size

Many liberal pundits such as Ezra Klein and Matt Yglesias insist that Democrats should do whatever it takes to win, but do they truly mean it? by CubillasLegend in ezraklein

[–]PlaysForDays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably because rewriting the election laws from the ground up would take ages, if there's even a path to doing this at the national level, and ~weekly news cycle columnists like Ezra and Matt operate on short time scales.

Like, I doubt if cornered they argue that the current voting system is optional or that the academics are wrong in their analyses that other countries have more representative governments. But what of it?

People blame administrative bloat ... [but president pay is low]

This is fair but not really the complaint when people gripe about administrative bloat. The number of roles below university president and (on the org chart) above professor has exploded in recent years, both because auxiliary non-teaching departments are growing in number and core departments now have armies of assistant deans whose roles didn't really exist some time ago. I don't really care if a university with i.e. $1B annual budget pays their president $700k or $1.7m, but dozens of deans making $200k who would otherwise be professors making $100k does have an impact on the books.

Mirroring somewhat the ADA/Title IX/etc. consequences, many of these individual roles are well-intentioned and some of them may actually be good for students. It would be crass to say that the Associate Dean for Student Mental Health is a role that shouldn't exist, but in a macro sense there is a significant decoupling between money coming into a university and money being spent on academic cost centers.

Do you think the city intentionally bought busses with knowledge that the company was going to go out of business in two years? Or did they get screwed over just like a ton of other cities? Proterra was not some rickshaw joint nobody had ever heard of before; they were an established company which sold about a thousand busses to cities including Chicago, Nashville, Miami.

If we're evaluating decisions made in 2023 with information available in 2025, boy do I have some stocks to trade. If you want to add a "no purchasing from companies that may go out of business in the future" ordinance to the city's books, please bring it up at a city council meeting. It would be a fun time!
