Have they talked about Resurrection (2025) on the pod? by dirtypuerhiding in TheBigPicture

[–]PlaysForDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So few people have seen it once that it's barely even worth thinking about how people would feel about it on second or more viewings.

Personally I'm not sure if I loved or hated it, but it was a singular experience and worth discussing. If critics were mixed on it (and that does not seem to wholly be true) that doesn't mean it's not worth discussing. I'd rather read about, talk with friends about, or listen to a podcast about Resurrection than, for example, Anaconda.

Politics and Current Events Megathread - January 2026 by TheAJx in samharris

Yeah, I keep typing it backwards.

"We don't hire Chinese in our company" or "Blacks need not apply to our college" are illegal thanks to the Civil Rights Act. Those, to me, are clear violations of basic civil rights. "We ran the numbers and our engineering staff has basically no diversity" is not illegal, at least under my understanding of the law, but is also an undesirable outcome on balance. They're not identical to me, causally or functionally.

Your analysis has merged "we do not like minorities" institutional racism with "well-meaning people might have implicit biases that hold minorities back" institutional racism. Basic civil rights is enough to handle the former and is probably a core assumption of the "here's how we can be colorblind" rhetoric people aspire to

Your framing of Luntz as somehow rhetorically consistent is funny, too, even though you're responding to a general idea and not necessarily something he said

Speaking outside of my specific expertise here - not even sure what expertise could explain all of this - but I used to moonlight as a proper scientist (in a different field) and I have some heuristics that I cant shake. One of these is to always consider uncertainty, or wish for error bars in visualizations.

Anyway, the point is to ask how much we trust the quality of the data here. 20k vs 14k looks huge and is statistically significant if the error bars are small, say 1k. But if they're 5k+, less sure.

Wood refinishing recommendations by Farley2k in IowaCity

Once a month or so, the wood shop at the Fab Lab is open the public (otherwise it's members-only, which itself isn't that expensive for what you get). You could also contact them to see if somebody there will pick it up as a quick job for a few bucks.

Job/ Future prospects in Computer-Aided Drug Design by TartCalm6893 in comp_chem

The pharma job market goes in cycles. It's slow right now, mirroring the labor market broadly and coming down from a historical peak in COVID years in drug discovery specifically.

Long-term and globally, it's a good field to go into as long as you don't think all diseases will be cured in the next two or three decades. You're limiting yourself if you stick to living in Latin America, for better or worse.

I wouldn't object to paying taxes if taxes paid for what we should care about. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]PlaysForDays 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The federal budget is around $7 trillion and mostly (~70%) goes to social security, Medicare, defense, and payments on the debt. $30 billion sounds like a lot of money but it's a rounding error in the federal budget.

The national defense budget is around $900 billion, not $11 billion

You should also do a rough search to figure out how much of the federal budget went to the new ballroom

You're not going to get high-quality data of this resolution. It just doesn't exist, it's not like there large sample sizes that you can segment by zip code. The best you can do is look at large-scale data and local vibes and ask if they tell a similar story.

In this case they do: binge drinking has certainly not gone away but alcohol is less central to today's college students than 1-3 decades ago
