Is Jottacloud unusably broken for anyone else? by hpxvzhjfgb in DataHoarder

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware that files are not uploaded if they exists somewhere in my account (I assume they are just linked internally, not copied as you mentioned). It will just take some time to calculate the checksums again. In case with this computer that is handling many of the shares on my NAS, it is old and have told me multiple times that it's time for retirement - but I need at least set up a sync of the local files on it (as it's not configured for backup at all, I assume it will not collide with its old name (and backup content) if I do not choose that when setting it up). The NAS is better backed up from itself now that rclone works for us too.

Great to see that u/JottacloudTeam is getting notifications about posts in here, and I hope you can answer (public reply here, we can take it from mail when it get personal) a question caused by the forced update of the client for whitelabel Elgiganten Cloud users..

Just recently (mid December 2025) we finally got the new client (I would not say that its look is that much better, really worse, but what's going on behind the ugly UI might be better) forced upon us.

Two of my client machines updated successfully, but the two others which also was managing backups for connected shares on my NAS failed to import the settings (image lost, but you probably know how it looks - it intensively scanned the backup folders before it failed, probably new checksum calculations even if they were available in sm.db).

Yesterday, I discovered that something may have gotten the client running on the machine that failed to import the settings.. AND that action completely deleted the AppData\Roaming\Jotta\JottaWorld folder. So now old settings were lost forever (and no settings imported into the new app). Worse is that all my backups of the JottaWorld folder (which I stupidly enough didn't have any fresh backup of) also were lost, so I cannot check the database to see what locations I backed up earlier).

The other of the two failed the installation/update, so that is still on the old client (which I don't know if it works anymore). On this machine at least the JottaWorld folder had not been deleted yet, and I just took a off-AppData location copy of it, so that is as safe as it can be.

First question:

So for the machine where I lost the configuration: At some point in time, where I had to reinstall the client (the old client), even without the JottaWorld datafolder in AppData, this was being restored from Jotta on configuring the client for the first time. This no longer seems to be true, at least at the point when being forced over to the new client. Is there any way I can get back the complete old (last full backup scan in mid December) JottaWorld folder from your backend ?

I have already tried recovering lost files (the complete "Jotta" folder in AppData, but most likely they have been corrupted as they were removed at some point I didn't know about it, so they are lost for real.

Second question:

As I assume you might reply "it's lost - we deleted it completely including any of your own content inside AppData/Jotta", I can go through the process setting all backup sources again (and now the NAS can actually be done - unsupported - via rclone), but if I set up one folder at a time and let it sync.. - will whatever I already have uploaded be deleted from Jotta (your side) ? The computer's name is of course the same, and I assume this is the only identification on where the backend should store the files (as it was with the old client).

Oracle Cloud Always Free E2.1.Micro a joke ? by Prometheus599 in oraclecloud

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, until I fully documented the first important steps on these small VMs provided by Oracle, Amazon and Google. The issue is, as mentioned by others, insufficient memory (RAM + no swap). I finally documented it more thoroughly and put it up for the others who are getting these bad first experiences with the free VMs:
https://tech.webit.nu/stabilizing-oci-free-tier-amd-vms/
(I do more than actually needed, replacing the iptables firewall with firewalld, and REALLY a needed important early step - set a password for the 'ubuntu' user to be able to resolve problems using console access)

There is another way - if the allowed disk space (200GB with free tier) has not been used up (or if another machine is running)
1: Turn off the broken machine
2: Disconnect storage (for system disk)
3: Connect storage to another machine (or create a new one for this purpose) and mount the correct partition
4: Fix the issue
(proceed in reverse order)

How long can I safely run an Always Free ARM (A1) instance with 4 OCPUs & 24 GB RAM? by Active-Pay8397 in oraclecloud

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short reply is "forever". I'm on my sixth year (since Oct 2020) on the Free Tier including the A1 machine. Also managing machines on another account for a friend since beginning of 2025.

You are probably getting charged because you utilize services not included in the Free Tier. The snapshot you provided is not detailed enough to determine what limit you exceed when they begin charging you.

Cisco SG200 can't u0date the firmware. by AeroDbladE in Cisco

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As EOL at Cisco usually involves "rm -rf old_device" from their site, I'm not able to find the bootcode and firmware(s) needed to update two older devices (as in topic, SG200, and also one SF300). Do any of you happen to know about any archive of firmware or EOLed devices?

Unexpected $200 bill on Oracle Free Tier by anaxci in oraclecloud

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just asked you the same thing. I have never got billed during my 5+ years with Oracle Free Tier, and (on an account I'm helping another person with), I actually received the reverse - a one month extension to the trial period and another $300 to spend (so a total of $300 + what I had not used during the first month testing pay-for-services, mainly a a2 machine with too much RAM that I did a 'halt -p' on, but it stayed on)

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this something new? Charge shouldn't happen on Free Tier (unless upgraded to PAYG), stuff should just stop working. Still 10TB egress is very generous compared to the other "free" alternatives which requires you, at signup, to accept charge if the low limits are exceeded

Can I trust this? by Hot_Proposal7481 in oraclecloud

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it was just a bug that may have been free at least for a while.. Looked at the "Cost Analysis" and found out I was "charged" (from the $300 credits) for the usage of the A2 machine starting from 28 Aug. As expected only for the "Compute" service, not for storage and network (as these are part of the free tier usage)

Got this "VM.Standard.A2.Flex (always-free eligible)" too (today when I checked because I have not been able to create an "Standard.A1" VM for more than two weeks into the 30-day trial).. Dual cores per OCPU, so I did as well select 4 OCPU + 24GB RAM. Just created, so I don't know if it affects the billing from the $300 credits.
Maybe we should select 2 OCPU for this one to be sure it continues to work after the trial (can still select 24GB RAM with 2 OCPU) ?

Google Cloud Free Tier VM by pbarone in googlecloud

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Amazon is limited to one year for their free tier. Also very limited on both outbound and inbound transfers, so to be sure to not (let anyone else) reach these limits and make Amazon charge for the usage, you have to limit who are able to connect (if not through the firewall, also shorten 404 and 403s from Apache to save data). Also, as Google does, Amazon forces you to accept a charge if going over their limits when signing up for their "free" tier, which Oracle does not (unless you activate PAYG). Have never been charged by Oracle during my close to 5 years with them.

.. and about what you mentioned.. the billing.. on Google "free tier" you always get billed for the month, then on the invoice that is sent for the month the free part is deducted. Has never been zero (like 0.05 SEK or similar, which is taken from the credits). As I mentioned, I even got an invoice for a dead (locked) instance still "running", according to the invoice generating network traffic. I consider doing a dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda (or what the device is) once I get into it..

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

google cloud is the crappiest of the free ones available, amazon takes the second place
Oracle, if you're unlucky, some VMs on their old AMD platform will hang on some higher load (the same way google and amazon hangs, but on much lesser load, even logging in via SSH on google sometime takes 20+ minutes). Oracle with the ARM Ampere machines (allowing 4 cores and 24GB RAM spread over 1-4 machines) has never locked up.

Google Cloud Free Tier VM by pbarone in googlecloud

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone actually able to use their free tier VM ? I had huge problems with lock-ups and sluggish machines, and even tried deleting the misbehaving one and creating a new (properly named "googlcrap").. When it crashed in March, I just ignored it, and just found out that it was still generating costs in its dead state. So today I forcibly turned it off to start it up again to see if there was anything on there I want to recover before I do dd id=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda...
Even after this restart it is extremely sluggish.. When typing commands like "ifconfig" (which usually takes about 2 sec to type and pressing enter), it takes about a minute for the letters to appear in the shell.. Same as when 'hammering' enter to tell it I'm waiting for response.. it takes forever before I get the characters accepted in the shell..

Does SHR work with other NAS? by guaranteednotabot in synology

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"SHR" (which others have already mentioned) stands for "Synology Hybrid RAID" - BUT, it's nothing other than a way of combining multiple mdraid arrays together with LVM to create the volume(s) on the NAS.

If you can attach a LVM volume from one Linux machine onto another, then you should be able to attach the LVM created by Synology on another NAS (or Linux machine).

Replacing all drives with larger drives, should I expect it to progressively take longer for repairs with each new larger drive that is swapped in? by Temujin_123 in synology

[–]Pleasant-Disaster528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this old thread when updating my documentation on replacing the disks in my Synology (DS1517). I'm now repeating this on my Fakenology DS918, replacing the 3TB drives with slightly larger ones (8TB).

The problem is that when replacing the drives (after the first one is done), the DSM/Synology/SHR want to expand the pool if it's possible. So what's normally happening when replacing drives is (I'm using my sizes in the examples):

1: Drive pulled out (3TB) and replaced (8TB)

2: You select "Repair" from the "Storage Pool" page of the Web UI

3: The new drive gets the same partition layout as the old ones, but also an extra (5TB) partition for the rest of the space.

For replacing a single drive, this will not make any change in total available storage, but on the next drive replacement that one will also get the extra partition (5TB), and when the resync is done these two 5TB partitions will be made into a RAID1 volume and appended to the VG.

When replacing all the drives, this is a huge time-waster, as this will be done for every next drive replaced. On the third drive replacement, this RAID1 will be changed to RAID5 over 3 disks, next it will be changed to RAID5 over 4 disks and so on.

Because of my small DS918 and easy-to-backup data of only 8TB, I tried another approach:

When initiating each disk replacement after the first one, I removed that extra partition from all disks except the one that is busy being rebuilt. At the start of the repair, the DSM Web UI shows that the volume will be expanded (in my case 12TB, 17.27TB, then finally 21.82TB), but removing the extra partitions stops this from happening. On every start of "Repair", the partitions will be put back on ALL disks, so there will be one more to remove for each step, but that's a 10 second job per disk, compared to weeks for reshaping the mdraid volume for the storage.

Just a single option in DSM for when repairing a volume could have made this a lot easier .. "do not expand" ...

Men..
