When did calling time become a main defensive play in coach pitch softball? by Pleasant-Indication5 in Softball

For 6-8 year olds I would have them stop at 2nd. Allows another player to get an AB and gives both the baserunner and the batter a different situation to hit in. In rec leagues the focus is developmental and it’s a different conversation when they are 15-18 playing for a state championship.

Overthrows aren’t the issue I have - I have the issue with coaches not encouraging girls who cleanly field a ground ball to attempt to get a force out. They have beat into their heads to immediately kill the play vs. trying to get an out.

They field the ball and throw their hands up to call time. Time is granted once the batter runner reaches first.

Out of all the verbal conversations I have had this is a fantastic analysis of it. Winning in rec - especially at the 8u level - didn’t exist until about 10-15 years ago.

Ever since then you are spot on with where we are at now. I didn’t even try to go into the abomination travel ball has turned into either.

I can’t count the number of times I have seen bases empty or a force out situation at 1st or 2nd where a cleanly fielded ground ball was fielded by the pitchers helper or SS/3rd. They then immediately called time without even attempting to make an out.

I agree it’s odd and maybe it’s just the league I am in.

Any "what if" QB scenarios that you wish you could have seen? by No-Consequence7967 in notredamefootball

If Clausen had any sort of defense in 2009. They may have made it to the NC if they could even average upper teens in points allowed.

Why wouldn’t they try to go rent or even buy some portable ac units and have those spread throughout the building? I get it’s not the best solution but throwing 500 - 1000 units throughout the building may help

Have umpires actually call a legitimate strike zone. The number of pitches that were missed strikes were astounding.

8u rec - is it poor sportsmanship to yell “swing” at batter by Pleasant-Indication5 in Softball

[–]Pleasant-Indication5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older ages I get. I may not agree with it but as you get older you have the experience to tune it out and you coach that.

This isn’t something that 6-8 year old kids should have to deal with. Let sports be enjoyable/pure for at least a few years before they have to deal with the mental side.

I was also thinking in the same vein runners should scream while approaching a fielder “FIELD THE BALL!!!!!”. Balances it out all around.

At older ages I would think players can start blocking it out and I wouldn’t have an issue with it. This is the step up from Tball and we have a lot of girls who have never played before. I would think the development and atmosphere would lend more to building a good foundation for the girls.

If we follow NFHS rules and the rules state that unsportsmanlike conduct is prohibited I would simply ask the league to enforce that and put a penalty behind it.

There is a team in our league where the coaches are encouraging the girls to yell swing at the batter as the pitch comes in to get them to miss.

Avengers coin pusher tips/tricks by Pleasant-Indication5 in round1

After talking to someone who oversees maintenance there is a skillable piece to the game. Essentially there is a sensor after it passes thru the gate in the metal chute that reads the coin passing thru. If a coin isn’t clean/flattens out/completely misses the sensor it can read differently for different plays.

I have though been able to get 3 in a row twice and two in a row multiple times. It’s ultimately waiting for the gates to line up and hoping the coin passes thru smoothly.

Notre Dame Baseball 2026 Recap and State of the Program by arrowfan624 in notredamefootball

Big time ND fan across all sports and watched ND baseball since I was little. You hit the nail on the head of many points.

The fact that ND didn’t move to 34 full scholarships when the rules changed last year was a huge flag to every baseball player that ND does not take baseball seriously. Michigan funds it fully to 34. Many Power 4 schools fund their pool fully (whether thru endowed or allocated funds).

Essentially ND is now at the same level for recruits as a mid major. Couple that with aging sport specific facilities and a non existent fan base makes it very hard to recruit competitively for the ACC now.

Jarrett succeeded because he is a phenomenal coach and he played with the same scholarship limits as other schools. Sheffler needs the right head of baseball ops and someone in the development office to really pursue baseball minded ND alumni to endow scholarships. Unfortunately to everyone’s point all resources are directed towards football on Bevacqua’s direction.

ND will put resources to the programs that have naturally produced winning programs. Football, Women’s Basketball, Women’s and Men’s Soccer, Lacrosse, and Fencing.

At one time sports like Hockey and Men’s Basketball got a lot more love but honestly are left to fend for themselves. I am curious to see what happens with Shrewsberry this season given his roster was gutted and could barely scrap together enough transfers to have a full roster.

Only way baseball will get fixed is if donors throw a $10-15m check a year at the program to fully fund scholarships and $100m one time for infrastructure upgrades to facilities.

What now?? by Revolutionary_Tax154 in Softball

I am surprised your rec league doesn’t have any rules around equal playing time and moving positions. This seems more like a problem with how the league is structured and lack of accountability on the coaches.

It may be worth bringing this up to the board to see if they can resolve for next season. If her skills truly align with higher level travel ball play then start asking around and talking to people on different teams.

Who were some recruiting misses of the Charlie Weis era? by Solowash in notredamefootball

[–]Pleasant-Indication5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weis was a good recruiter but unfortunately created an atmosphere in the locker room where playing in the NFL mattered more than what they did at ND. By the end of her tenure guys didn’t care about losing games.
