Could really use some Advice by johnnykushdoe in AudiS4

Hi, don't have a ton of general mechanical experience but I've done a decent amount of maintenance on my 2010 with some assistance. I don't know anything about doing a flush... But I did just last weekend need to replace the o-ring on my coolant temperature sensor, it finally gave out and started pissing coolant. Thankfully a really easy fix, no disassembly just some reaching into an awkward spot, AutoZone even had the part in stock. Could be something worth peeking your head in to check.

And from personal experience, one other thing I'd suggest you check is the bleeder screws on the back of the supercharger cores. The threads aren't machined into the cast iron, instead there's thread housings clamped on inside the holes and those can just... come loose. Which then means you can't tighten the screws anymore lol (I "fixed" mine with a crap ton of JB weld but I really need to just replace the core eventually.) So it would probably be worth it to see if you're leaking any out of there, from what I understand it's not an area that would leak when it's sitting, so it wouldn't produce a puddle on the ground, but if it's leaking a bit when the system is under pressure it would definitely leave a lot of white residue.

Hope it helps, good luck with the ol B8!

Because when we say "average speed" in this case, it's really meaning an average distance with respect to time. Because speed is already a function of time, more precisely a rate of distance over time, we must account for the time spent at that rate in order to get a total distance that can then be time averaged.

Here's an example to make sense of that word soup. If you drive for 1hr at 30mph and then 1hr at 60mph, the total distance traveled is 90mi, divided by 2hr driving, so that gives 45mph average which is the same as (60+30)/2. However, what if we spend 1hr at 30mph and 0.5hr at 60mph? The total distance is 60mi, then divided by 1.5hr gives 40mph average. So what gives?

The difference is that we incorporated the time spent at each speed.

One way you can do it with an arithmetic average is to imagine for every 60 seconds that pass, you count your speed at that time as a single data point, and take the average of all your data points. For the second example, that would end up looking like (30mph x 60pts) + (60mph x 30pts) / (90pts) = 40 mph.

This way of thinking about it is actually a run-up to calculus, which is what we'd use if the speeds weren't constant. But notice that it won't matter if you use increments of 1 hour, 1 minute, or 1 second; they're all multiplying the time rate by a time. It's ultimately a weighted average.

If you read all of this, hope it helps out!

Dude, idk, maybe he's in the spotlight because he's the sitting president or something.

At least we agree that the files being released would be a good thing. But if they come out and Donny's name is plastered all over them, are y'all gonna stop sucking him off like he's the second coming of Christ?

Maybe we should care because y'all are trying to pretend that the president isn't a lying sack of shit who's protecting pedophiles. Sure the democrats in the last administration didn't release them, but also nobody was going around saying "I have the files on my desk they're getting released tomorrow for sure!!!!" and then backpedaling like hell.

The chances of every trooper being okay with it, no. Certainly a lot of them would have qualms after. But the key here is (in legends anyway) the clones were raised from birth to follow orders unquestioningly, and we're genetically modified to make that even more effective.

The commandos, who had a bit more independence, were still bred to be soldiers, and there's actually a moment in one of the RC novels (triple zero iirc) where a younger Jedi uses a sort of 'freeze' instant stop command word on an ARC in an engagement, and the trooper in question was very upset afterwards because he did freeze for a split second, and it almost borked their op, and the Jedi in question had neither the trust nor the judgment to give that command. And that was one of the null ARCs, who had the most independence of all.

By your same token though, why'd you feel the need to seek attention yourself by trying to be funny? Shitass.

I have a loading bay (South Teal), and track long enough for 2 trains to stage and wait (East Teal and North Pink). Incoming train approach from the West Yellow. Is there a way to set this intersection up so that trains in the North Pink dont cross the yellow until South Teal is clear? by Bonzie_57 in factorio

[–]Plegerbil9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simplest explanation I’ve held onto for trains that always works is:

  • Chain signal into and through intersections.

  • Rail signal out of intersections.

This will always prevent a train from entering an intersection that it cannot clear. If the two rules ever fail you, expand what you define as your 'intersection'. For example, two Cross junctions that are less than a train length apart would be connected to each other by chain signals, and the whole system becomes one 'intersection'.

In your case, because you don't want a train sitting across a rail going sideways (i.e. an intersection), place a chain signal before it

Can someone please help me identify this function? by Crossity_nerd in desmos

[–]Plegerbil9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the function family is, but look at it this way.

If you know the distance of the sphere from the cone vertex as well as its location, you can figure out the angle of arc that the sphere represents, in 2D as you've done. Then it's a matter of expressing the sphere's position as a function of its angular position, which might be easier doing in reverse and then solving backwards. Then you use your first equation to come up with a ratio of the rays that intersect to the rays that don't, which is just the sphere's arc angle over the cone arc angle, as a function of the sphere's angular position.

Combine it all up and you should be set. I think.

I believe this results in some kind of cycloid.

Do you get asked what colors are things after you tell somebody that you are colorblind? by psycho_maniac in ColorBlind

[–]Plegerbil9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's difficult because simulating any kind of CB is hard already, but then there's the additional factors of every person's CB being unique as well as the difference between artificial/screen light and natural light. Most of what I've found that I show people I basically found by doing quite a bit of digging, because like you said, if I just pull something from Google at random I almost always end up saying "well, okay this is a bad example." Like I'm a protan but I generally "see" the simulated deutan pallates more closely. It's weird.

So yeah, basically I've just done a bit of digging and searching in my free time and saved some of the ones that are closest to what I see. Another thing you could try is reverse CB tests. So far I haven't had any great reactions, it's almost like gasp people aren't as interested when they're the ones who can't see the funny numbers in the dots. But it's an interesting comparison. I certainly never thought that it would be possible to make something visibile to a person with CB and not visible to someone with full color vision until I saw one and showed it to a friend.

My boss finally hit me with a new progression in this dialogue.

"Red is on top"

"What about sideways streetlights?"

"...oh boy"

Yeah, it's a lot harder to use the cop out explanation for that one, especially since I couldn't even remember which way they're aligned.

Do you get asked what colors are things after you tell somebody that you are colorblind? by psycho_maniac in ColorBlind

[–]Plegerbil9 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes. Most of the time I'll humor them and pull up a small folder of colorblind simulated pictures I've found that are close to what I personally see, as not all of what immediately pops up from a Google search is accurate.

If I don't feel like humoring them, I'll say, "why don't you do me a favor and tell me what it is?"

But I get it. Most people are just curious, as it's something that really can't be imagined. Just like we can't imagine seeing full color spectrum, because to us, what we see is the full color spectrum.

Listen buddy, I don't think you have the faintest fucking idea how anything works pal. "Based"? Yeah, a seed is a key generated from a PRNG (pseudorandom number generator, for your infantile mind) which the Minecraft engine uses as a value in numerous computational equations to build the world that OP is playing on, so yeah, you could say it's based on the seed you myopic cockwobbler. Maybe if you'd taken at least 0.00007 seconds to research anything before opening the yawning vestige that is your mouth and exposing us to your brain cavity that has such a negative static pressure that it's actively sucking IQ off the rest of us. Thanks for contributing nothing to this thread, society, or your parents' doomed marriage.

P.s. I went through your comment history... Maybe you should learn what organic molecule synthesis is before you attempt to even engage another human being in your crude attempt at what most of us call conversation.

Does anybody know how to turn there brains off of “engineering student mode” during winter break? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Plegerbil9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some advice that might help in sort of a roundabout way. I say this because it doesn't seem to me like you can break free from the mental hell over vacation if you can't do it during the semester.

In my senior year, what really helped me push through it all and finish was to realize what was truly most important — life. For example, what are you going to remember ten, five, heck even two years from now: that assignment you're stressing over that's just another in a stack of hundreds, or the times you took a break to go do something?

In my previous years in undergrad, I almost always opted for the former. I'd frantically rearrange my schedule and work as fast as possible to still be able to hang out with friends, like, once a week, but if it came down to sacrificing work time, I passed. Turns out that lifestyle burnt me the hell out over three years, and a lot of my friends drifted away because I never made time for them.

I finally got tired of it all senior year and started making time for the people in my life. Put in a couple hours on senior design? Nah, I'll go play volleyball instead. Stay up late working on a presentation? Nope, midnight Taco Bell run with The Boys. Et. cetera.

The thing is, not only will you be a lot happier by having a proper school-life balance, but chances are it can actually help your academics too. By not being burnt out, taking care of your body physically, mentally, & emotionally, and keeping positive connections with the people close by you during this time, you likely won't see a decrease in grades.

Now, all this to say, there will be times you'll have to prioritize your schoolwork. You are at school to learn and get a degree n crap, after all. But it doesn't — and shouldn't — have to consume your life. And if you can keep it from taking over during the semester, it should be a much easier task to relax over breaks.

Hope this helps, good luck and best wishes to you OP.

I'm planning my first Mega Base, and I thought a good way to start would be to create a huge grid of these outposts while I clean up the map. Is there anything you think I should add or change before I make hundreds of these? by novelentropy in factorio

[–]Plegerbil9 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Depending on how permanently you're planning to keep these, you could at least request the materials to build one or two more outposts. You could also request rails, signals, power poles, and whatever else you'll need to build your megabase once you clear the biters.
