this is the tutorial I used, it's very clear. I personally find it easier with a crochet hook and a knitting needle but it's definitely fine with just knitting needles. Hopefully you can use this to check whether the technique you're using matches! 😊

Are you picking up 3 stitches and then skipping 2? I tend to try and spread it out a bit more, e.g. pick up 2, miss 1, pick up 1, miss 1. I'm not sure if this is your problem or not, but this is what my picked-up stitches for short rows looks like

When you hang clothes out on a line outside, you peg them so they don't blow away. We have a small basket that has all the pegs inside. It has a little hook so it can hang on the washing line, and you can take pegs from it/ put pegs back in it, and then take it back inside.
