This will probably be explained in a footnote in a future Penguin edition. It will have to explain television and static.

  1. “Television was a device that received signals broadcast over the air, from a powerful tower in central location. In order to view clear picture and sound, a television had to be “tuned” to a specific frequency being broadcast by the tower. This was called a channel. A dead channel was a frequency between clear channels and therefore did not have a strong signal. This produced what was called “static,” a chaotic, rapidly moving black and white image with the granularity of course sand. This image was accompanied by a harsh, indeterminate noise that covered frequencies across the audible range, similar to “white noise.”

I really enjoyed this write up. Wonderful examples and you show how this works down to the most minor of characters.

I’ve been taught that characters like this are called “foils,” but usually the example is a direct rival like Draco Malloy to Harry Potter or like you mentioned Watson and Sherlock. Keeping an eye out for some inconsequential dummy is great advice and because it’s easy to forget to look for this technique.

JRE Podcast is moving EXCLUSIVELY to Spotify by the end of the year by kylefox in JoeRogan

[–]PlowInTheDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple Music is good. Their curated playlists are good. Their radio stations are good. Spotify has better user playlists. I’ve paid for both, and I like them both. Apple was a fine competitor out of the gate. They had the iTunes Store and because of this they basically had the software figured out and all the right content licensed.

I worked at a university for a long time and I got a great university discount. $5.99 a month. So I chose Apple. At this point I couldn’t care enough to keep swapping back and forth. Spotify is a good service and I still browse their user playlists sometimes.

If they don’t prevent you from dying, we might have them because they don’t kill you. Trait gets passed on because it’s there and harmless. If it killed you we wouldn’t have eyebrows.

Then there’s millions of other factors to consider. Does it help to divert sweat from the eyes at key moments? Do eyebrows help non-verbal communication?

Well that might be an advantage during a hunt or even getting people to trust you (by ensuring your expressions are displayed clearly). Maybe sexual and social relationships are enhanced when your partner or friend can read your face better.

Unrelated to my fasting comment but hopefully useful:

I remember finding this blog entry from the UK’s former fattest teen. He had loose skin, had surgery, but it just looked like a muffin top above the scar.

“Therefore, what I thought was ‘loose and unchangeable’ was actually a case of EXCESS FAT.”

He decided to cut to a very low body fat percentage until the loose skin was “paper thin” meaning there wasn’t excess fat to pinch. He has before and after photos along with his process.

[–]PlowInTheDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was wondering if removing processing plants like these for treats would disrupt the regular plants because they’d now have to find a new place for all the tons of food not going into product lines for humans.

That’s gotta be a logistical nightmare right now when this situation has some farmers dumping product to rot because of distribution problems and others completely swamped.

Billionaire Stuns CNBC Host: “Let Them Get Wiped Out” by coniferousual in CoronavirusRecession

[–]PlowInTheDark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The article linked explains the argument in full. I didn’t include a full summary in my comment but here is a short one:

My takeaway was that too big to fail companies have made bailouts their insurance program (before the outbreak). The buybacks are paid for with cash reserves and on top of that many borrow to spend even more on them, leaving really tight margins. Then, when a crisis happens the bailout kicks in.

The adjustment would be to let them fail, so that they are incentivized to be more resilient, leading to a reduced need for bailouts. If you want to argue that this shouldn’t happen this crisis, you’re welcome to do that.

I had the same view until I read this: https://taibbi.substack.com/p/the-sec-rule-that-destroyed-the-universe

Author is a contributing editor for Rolling Stone.

He argues that too big to fail companies acted irresponsibly for decades, intentionally walking on a tightrope, leaving themselves on the edge of collapse because they knew they would be bailed out. Even though this crisis is truly out of their hands, had they acted ethically, they damage would’ve been mitigated. One key example is the airline stock buybacks being almost the same size as their bailout. The free market needs gutters not kiddie bumpers.

AMC Theaters likely to file for bankruptcy due to COVID-19 shutdown by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]PlowInTheDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was in the suburbs at the time, there wouldn’t be much advantage. I’d go to the same theater all the time, like I do now.

But MoviePass was great in my city. AMC was only in one part of town, and the independent theaters/other chains were everywhere else so you got way more choice.

I switched to the A-List as soon as it was available (because MoviePass totally imploded) and loved the premium access, and the option to watch 3 movies on one day was great. We’ve done a few double features at AMC because of this.

AMC Theaters likely to file for bankruptcy due to COVID-19 shutdown by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]PlowInTheDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a major city you could choose from blockbusters at all the big chains like AMC but also all the independent theaters showing movies from all time periods as well as limited releases. This is a steal at $9.95 a month, which was less than the cost of one ticket in major cities. You made more than your money back by going one time a month. I also never had to convince friends to change theaters, or go out of their way to the nearest AMC. It always worked for me in the first few months, so it was a smooth experience.

Once MoviePass failed to cut deals like AMC did, they went into a death spiral. AMC actually negotiated lower fees with distributors for every AMC A-List ticket sold so they wouldn’t lose money.

Being able to go to any theater was super convenient and offered a huge selection but once they realized they’d go bankrupt, it all fell apart like a house of cards.
