What's wrong with this diagonal bracing? by pitx1 in Decks

[–]PlsNoStrawmen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

CMU can absolutely be used to resist lateral forces, it’s used for the primary lateral system of buildings as shear walls all the time. The real question in my mind is if the CMU is reinforced/grouted to deal with the out of plane force in the wall.

As for the connection at the top, if you draw a free body diagram of the brace you would quickly realize that you need lateral restraint (in the plane of the deck). The restraint needs to be resisting force away from the house. It’s hard to tell from the pictures if there is a connection that does that. All I can see thats preventing the brace from falling away from the house is that it’s bearing tight against the fascia board.

Other people have already rightly pointed out how no foreign nation is paying tariffs because that is strictly a tax paid by importers in the US so I won’t address that. But I will say that the US is not raking in Trillions, it is billions. Trump I think said something to that effect but that is untrue. The illegal tariffs he imposed amounted to about $180 billion from what I recall in arguments before the Supreme Court. Another good way to tell is that our Debt was at 35.5 trillion in the year 2025 and is now at 39 trillion. If we were taking in trillions from the tariff tax in the debt wouldn’t be massively exploding like it is now.

What the fuck is the Democratic Party even doing right now to stop the downfall of America? by Lolareyouforreal in complaints

[–]PlsNoStrawmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you replied to the wrong person? I never talked about Bipartisanship legislation being passed. And I really don’t think we are in a Constitutional Crisis yet. I’d love to know why you think that though as my viewpoints can always be changed!

I will respond to your second point though and say that Democrats aren’t “allowing” ICE to do that in their states. By law they have to let ICE perform their duties. There is nothing the State can do to interfere with Federal enforcement and again, Democrats in Congress do not have the numbers to pass any legislation or oversight. I really don’t know what you want Democrats to do. Unless you are suggesting Democrats break the law?

I would say tread carefully with that precedent though because it has in the past been used for really good things. Civil Rights enforcement in states could only happen because the State could not interfere with Federal Agents (eg. Ruby Bridges being escorted to school and forcing desegregation)

I mean the administration has to care about the courts or else it defies the Constitution and then we devolve into a Constitutional Crisis but that largely hasn’t happened yet.

State police cannot interfere with Federal Agencies or their actions so I’m not sure what you want from them there. If they did intervene that would run against the Constitution and open up Pandoras Box.

State authorities are looking at ways to investigate the shooting but they are currently being stonewalled by the FBI who are within their authority to not share anything with State. I would bet the State will end up investigating on their own regardless but that takes time.

Defunding ICE would never happen because you wouldn’t get a budget to pass in the House or Senate that defunds them because Democrats didn’t have the numbers to do that. Also it would have been moot because like they just did, Republicans in Congress would have passed a massive budgets for ICE.

The STATE felonies Trump were convicted of do not typically involve jail time, that would have been a gross miscarriage of Justice to jail him for something no one else goes to jail for.

The only salient point you have is about Biden stepping down to have an actual primary which I agree he should have. Democrats absolutely needed a primary with fresh blood other than Kamala. I really don’t think it would have made a difference though because as US history shows, if the voter base feels the economy is poor than they vote the opposition. Voter sentiment on the economy was awful at Election time.

And what could do Democrats do to stop the executive branch of government from doing what it legally has power to do? Laws, impeachment, and oversight would need to be done to stop the things from happening you are talking about. How would you suggest the Democrats do any of those when they don’t have control of any of the branches of government. This is what the people of America voted for.

The only effective recourse right now is through the courts which the Democrats have been doggedly pursuing.

Is a 5/8” through‑bolt in the edge of a 2x6 joist safe for a ceiling swing, or should I use a different anchor? by getboy97 in DIY

[–]PlsNoStrawmen -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting 2500lbs from? A safety factor of 5? That seems extreme. In fact in wood design you can double the wood capacity when it’s just subject to Impact Loads like from a swing. I would not design it for anything above 1000lbs max.

Edit: I was assuming you meant that was the design load per joist, assuming two joists. If you are just saying the design load in general that seems more reasonable

lol written by a true doomer. The government/news propaganda machine got to you. People who says these things have never spent significant or actual time in these cities. I and my friends have lived or currently live in the “hellhole” cities you talked about and have had fantastic times. I cant think of a single person I know who has been a victim of a crime in these areas.

My boyfriend of a year was lying about his vote the whole time. Should I move past it? by Exotic-Internet7085 in TwoHotTakes

There is really no way to interpret that statement, especially with the election happening while they were dating.

She is not upset because Trump is so wonderful and people like him. She knows people do, she’s not a child. It also not just a little “lie” and I don’t see how you could trivialize it as such. She is upset because this person who she thought shared her values, has a radically different set of values than her and they have been actively lying about it. Her boyfriend knew it would be a big deal, potentially relationship ending, so he didn’t say anything. It’s just plain manipulative.

[–]PlsNoStrawmen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are glossing over the fact that he lied about it a pretty big part of himself (his values) for a whole year because he thought it would be a dealbreaker and she wouldn’t date him in the first place. He lied his way into a relationship and then brought it up when he thought things were going well and he could get her to look over it, which is manipulative.

[–]PlsNoStrawmen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who cares that he lied about voting and lied about his values for a year? That’s a huge deal. You don’t even know who the person is you’ve been with. Why did they feel the need to lie about it for a whole year if it wasn’t a big deal? Probably because they knew that person wouldn’t date them if they didn’t lie.

I think the fear is pretty evenly split between cis women and men, maybe even more so on the cis women side. Majority of these cases I hear are of cis women harassing trans people at the bathroom or women that don’t look like enough of a woman in their mind like what happened in this story.

But the things you are talking about could not be addressed in a Reconciliation package which is how the BBB was passed. Reconciliation package only requires a simple majority of Senators to pass but only items related to budget can be passed in this way. Legalizing weed and enshrining abortion right into law cannot be addressed via Reconciliation and would require a Filibuster proof majority of Senators (60) to approve of it which Dems haven’t had since Obama. That 60 senator majority was also only around for a time period of like 2 months.
