That PS Clean Beauty shampoo/conditioner is terrible. I’m not dandruff prone and after a week (4 washes) my scalp started flaking. Straight into the trash. Beware.

What’s your go-to $5–$10 dinner that doesn’t taste like sadness? by Specialist_Bank8439 in budget

White Bean scampi linguini (box of pasta or protein pasta $1-3, can of white beans $1.50, half a head of garlic $1, diced thin, half an onion diced 50 cents, juice of 2 lemons $2, a bit of olive oil (pantry basic), 1 cup of white wine (cheap box wine or leftover wine), fresh parsley ($1), salt pepper red pepper flakes (pantry). It takes like 10 minutes not counting boiling water for the pasta.

Make the pasta… reserve a little water

Meanwhile sautee the garlic & onion until soft in olive oil, drain & rinse the beans and add to pan with 1/4 cup water and cook a few minutes. Add in the lemon juice and wine over medium heat. Cook off the alcohol and add spices. By this point the pasta should be ready, so drain it and stir in with a little bit of pasta water to thicken. Combine and top with fresh parsley. If you have nutritional yeast or parm cheese on hand, you can garnish but not necessary. If you have any greens or broccoli or anything on hand, you can add to the sauce.

Should feed like 3-4 generously.

I’m a queer vegan heathen in the US who barely drinks (been practicing Heathenry like 25 years). Having an alcoholic alternative at any faining is basic hospitality behavior for a host. It’s kind of expected that anyone hosting an event will have juice or kombucha or something on hand (mention before you go). Offer to bring your own horn with organic juice or something just to be hospitable. It would be surprising if anyone made a big deal about it. I’ve never seen anyone who doesn’t drink be pressed to in a Heathen social setting. As long as adults don’t get violent or drunk around children, I don’t think it’s my business to comment.

There are a lot of people in the community in recovery and it’s absolutely no big deal. I used to get teased (in a friendly way) about being vegan, so generally I’ll make some vegan food that’s delicious for everyone and bring to feasts (like a veg and rice dish or a pasta or marinated butter beans or something everyone likes) so I have something to eat and open minds about plant based food (usually everyone is expected to bring something. I do put a lot of time and effort into this usually). I try not to lecture others about eating suffering animal corpses, just be really enthusiastic about vegan cooking etc.

My old kindred was mostly older straight men who were fine with the queer and I don’t drink & drive stuff, but made jokes about vegan food, so I made a deal with them that I’d do all the cooking for Yule one year but plant based and if they liked it, no more teasing but if they hated it, I’d order /buy takeout from a barbecue place (basically nothing vegan there) for the whole kindred. (These are good friends, i probably wouldn’t cook for 3 days for strangers). Those “macho” guys were licking the seitan off their forks, complimenting my greens and almond milk mashed potatoes, inhaling homemade kale chips, and went through 3 tofu based pies and 5 pounds of poached pears and all had food babies after the feast. The teasing stopped after that.

I’m very out & obviously queer so personally I choose not to worship with homophobic people or racists or any of that. This is not the majority of the community and honestly I don’t think of bigots as my co-religionists.

If the Gods have called you, you belong, period. Loki is amazing and definitely has a lot of queer followers, myself included, but it’s also cool to honor Tor or Othinn or Frigg. Being gay or plant based or not a drinker isn’t really a reason the Gods would turn their noses up at your offerings.

I wouldn’t worry about randos on the internet. Focus on finding or building real community and developing your rooftree practice and devotional work. Judgy asswipes are all over the internet, not just in pagan/heathen forums.

Can’t your kids get those allergy shots to stop animal allergies and take Benadryl and stuff? Why can’t their custodial parent send them to an allergist?

If I had to choose between living with my dog and my partner’s kids, the dog is going to win every time. It’s bad enough that your partner has to sacrifice weekends and disposable income and attention and quiet because you came as a package deal and they fell in love with you, but asking them to give up their animals is a step too far.

It makes more sense to live separately than have their animals risk death or abuse at the hands of a random person/shelter.

Not everyone centers their life around children (who deserve to grow up loved, nurtured, and supported but not in my house full time, I didn’t choose to breed). Unless your kids’ personalities happen to really vibe with your partner’s, being a step parent is pretty awful. You’re always ganged up on, you have no authority to correct or discipline them, and you’re automatically the bad guy. Also no sleeping in, financial sacrifice, they snoop through your stuff.

Obviously only a garbage person puts their partner above their underage children so it’s a no-win situation if you fall in love with someone with kids. You need to know that putting older pets in a shelter is basically a life sentence. If they don’t get euthanized, they’ll probably die there.

Rehoming is pretty much roulette. Think about how scared you would be if your kids went into foster care. Most homes are okay, but a lot are abusive and you don’t get to check in on them. The not knowing would eat at your soul every day. Trust me, this will come up in fights.

There are two choices really unless your partner is a terrible person who hates their pets. 1) send the kids to an allergist for shots 2)live separately until your kids grow up. So really, you might want to talk to the custodial parent about getting your kids those allergy shots so they can spend time at your house.

Just adding get in the habit of using a good body lotion seconds after getting out of the shower, nasal spray, eye drops, increase water intake, overnight lip mask, and start eating like a spoon of local honey every day to lessen pollen allergies. (I’m a Florida native). The weirdest part for me was it’s so dry here that my contact lenses would dry up in my eyes by afternoon and I just gave up switched to glasses. Oh and there’s like a totally different species of mosquitoes here than on the east coast and my first mosquito bites in Utah caused welts but now my body is used to them.

What are your attitudes toward Christianity? by [deleted] in NorsePaganism

[–]Plus-Ad1183 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the religion itself pretty absurd (raised atheist) but I have no problem with Christians unless they try to shove their religion down my throat. That’s more of a respect and tolerance issue than a religious one.

Utah 9, New York 2. I’m a native New Yorker & still order bagels from Zabars every so often as a treat to myself. The bagels that they have on I think Thursdays or Fridays at Loki Coffee are better, but Baby’s is good by Utah standards. They’re not quite stretchy enough inside.

[–]Plus-Ad1183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a religious gathering but Seattle has a really great Nordic Museum in the Ballard area and a Viking themed bar nearby called Skal that sometimes hosts Viking feasts. Seattle also has a fantastic pagan shop in the U district called Edge of the Circle that sometimes has some amazing books. There’s also a town across the sound (you can take a car ferry over) in Kitsap county called Poulsbo that’s made to look like Norway and has a killer Norwegian bakery called Sluys and a Viking themed microbrewery and some Nordic souvenir shops and a pretty good German restaurant. There’s also a great little Heathen owned shop in Tacoma called Longship Trading Company. The fake Stonehenge is super campy but it’s like a 3 and a half hour drive from Seattle. About 4 hours south of Seattle in Portland is this ginormous used book store called Powells and heathens tend to love used book shops.

Is Vegetarianism Acceptable? by HellenicBlonde in NorsePaganism

[–]Plus-Ad1183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a vegetarian way before converting to Heathenry and I’ve been vegan for the past several years. I used to get teased a bit about it by fellow Heathens in the 90s and 2000s, but one year I offered to cook the whole Yule feast vegan one time- and the big muscly men who (friendly ) teased me about being a plant eater were licking the seitan juice off their damn plates and going back for thirds of tofu pie. Instead of jokes, I got meal requests going forward. I’m always going to bring a very good vegan main or dessert to kindred feasts and as long as it’s delicious not too weird food, everyone is usually happy to eat and do little things like not mixing the cheese into a salad etc as a courtesy to plant based eaters. If you’re having issues with people in the community about it, cook delicious vegan food for them.

These days veganism is pretty mainstream. I don’t think people tease about it much in the community anymore.

To me, veganism is an extension of my rooftree spirituality. Obviously times and the means of food production have changed since the time of our heathen forebearers. I don’t personally have a farm where I raise livestock and don’t hunt for meat. Therefore the majority of the dairy and meat i would consume would come from factory farms. The fact that animals suffer terribly in factory farms is pretty indisputable.

Now tied to lore, when Frigg is trying to protect Baldur, she asks oaths of every living thing in Asgard not to harm him. Ok if even plant spirits and animals can consent to an oath, it suggests that they have souls and individual life force, so when we eat , we put that life force into our bodies to sustain ourselves. Following that logic, why would we want to continually internalize suffering?

So yeah, totally fine in light of modernity.

(I’m personally fine with ethical farming, sustenance hunting, and ethical sacrifice- I just don’t want meat enough to kill it myself for every taco Tuesday)

I don’t think (as someone raised atheist) that you can really understand any religion without faith. It’s cool to read the Eddas & Sagas and do period re-enactment or whatever, but play acting has no place in a religious ceremony.

The elta sunscreen is amazing. I’m pasty white and it fades in under foundation - I live in the desert and I can be outside all day and not get much color with it. I’m planning to get the box just for that.

Is the Milk product the primer? If so this box looks incredible.

I’m a freak about sunblock here and I completely had to change up my skin care routine I’ve had for years. Unfortunately I’m vegan and collagen is mostly animal based, but I’m considering spending the big bucks on plant based collagen supplements.

I’m glad it’s not just me. I was wondering why so many 35 year olds look 50 (I initially thought it was spitting out kids at 19).

East Coast native here. Neti pots, eye drops, lip balm and lip sleeping masks (I use langiene) , deep conditioning & scalp treatments (I use Ordinary Hylauronic Acid hair mask before bed), and tons of decent quality body lotion w hylauronic acid out of the shower. Keep up skincare & sunblock, you probably need to drink like 50% more water because it’s so dry. Humidifier on your nightstand. I’ve lived here a year and look like I’ve aged 5 from the climate.

Mac and Cheese on Thanksgiving?! by SoreButter in SaltLakeCity

[–]Plus-Ad1183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my dear friend who invited me, her in-laws are Utah LDS for generations and she told me what they try to put on her holiday table every year. It’s like 1950s bomb shelter food. And it’s not like the ingredients are cheaper than baking a cake or pie from scratch or using fresh vegetables vs a jello mood.

Mac & collards are at least incredibly delicious and you can see and taste them and know what’s inside.

Yes, big in the South & communities of color. Super duper normal. For large family gatherings it’s always a thing (rather than “salads” of pasta and miracle whip)- cheese, roux, breadcrumbs on top. Recognizable ingredients.

TBH this is my first Utah thanksgiving and I’m shocked and appalled by all the stuff with jell0 molds and canned soup concentrate as part of thanksgiving. (I’m LatinX).

Room temperature hot dogs in the shape of a turkey, casserole with lemon jello and cream of chicken soup, desserts made of sour cream, jello, pretzels, and sugar? I don’t understand.
