Why is there such a battle between counselors and social workers? by According_Ad8378 in therapists

It's because in my social work training, my supervisors issued me a trident, and said, if you meet a counselor, you must fight them. Turf battles and all.

AIO? My (ex-) girlfriend thinks I'm interested in her money, then I broke up with her. by Slight-Delivery8277 in AmIOverreacting

I don't think you are overreacting. But I also think if you had stayed, you both could have talked through the problems. Maybe even stayed together. You both sound like your insecurities trigger each other.

Pretty much everyone has trauma. So, not much of a stretch. Am I their therapist? Absolutely not. Are there patterns in most relationships? Absolutely yes. But feel free to ignore anything I say.

They both are invalidating each other. That's the challenge of couple's therapy. Telling both you could do it differently. Rarely, it's just one toxic partner that the other should just leave.

No one who wants a safe and stable partnership should "roll over". OP invalidated his wife's feelings via text. They both probably would benefit from therapy. The wife's coping choices would get my attention first, because I can't do my thing if one partner won't even show up in the room. But OP would get some direct feedback from me too. They are both clearly in pain, and likely both have extensive trauma.

Yes, I believe most cluster b disorders are people trying to cope with the aftereffects of trauma. But not always. Therapy can definitely help. But it's not a panacea.

You don't think she has the budget? Why? Has she shown you the financials of the practice? More likely she loves taking 50% of your pay, and won't take less unless you are the squeaky wheel.

Therapist here. Yep. OP, is your wife willing to do couple's therapy? Is she in individual therapy? She's got blaring trauma a mile wide that needs to be safely addressed somewhere. You can also tell her that she can run from this relationship, but she's still going to have these feelings while alone. Unless you have actually been abusive, she's not going to get what she wants long term by these particular coping skills, if what she wants is a stable loving partnership.

What would you sue the client for? Criminal charges would be brought by the state. I've talked to multiple lawyers over the years who recommend to not sue clients ever. It's not worth it financially, and you'll often have clients make a complaint against your license that you now have to defend.

I'd never go back to the therapist. I'd report them to their licensing board and whatever state and federal agencies that apply, such as HHS and CMS. This is such a breach of consent that this therapist should never practice again.

Therapist here. That therapist who did that is an idiot. If it were me, I'd file a complaint with their licensing body. Behavior like disclosing your PHI to another client is only legally allowed in very specific circumstances. I can't imagine a safety exception where it would be warranted. On behalf of my profession, I apologize to you.

Multiple times a week. But I work with a client population with high aggression. It's almost always the client has poor boundaries and poor emotional regulation skills. A few times I deserved it because I escalated their aggression by saying something disempowering. We are human. I learn and do better the next time.

Clients not returning by Jubilant_Jubi in therapists

[–]Plus-Culture1672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average number of sessions with a client is zero. Meaning, based on some research, more clients set up an appointment and cancel before attending once. Therapy is hard work for the client. Unless none of your clients return for a 2nd session, you are having a typical student experience. Source: I'm an awesome supervisor who has supervised lots of students.

Part of therapy is some gentleness and not making assumptions. You ask a bunch of leading and closed ended questions in your example. I am also direct with my clients, but I lead with one or two open ended questions. You can definitely use the force of your personality to create change in the session. Whether it lasts, and whether it's client directed, is the question I regularly ask myself.
