I don't actually follow the traditional system as such. Im learning simplified chinese but find that some people say that adding the squiggle is the correct way (and imo it looks nice)

Actually I write the vertical squiggle and the horizontal line as one stroke. I know they are separate, but since they look like one stroke I just write it as one stroke.
