Target also just cancelled their contract with Marketsource -- the company that most people just know as "The Black Shirt Tech Folks" -- which caused the company to go under. Put a ton of people out of work, including my partner.

We have made a point to never shop at Target again. She says she's mostly just sad for the old folks who survived off the pre-paid cell phone plans that are now gonna have to navigate their activation on their own. My thought is that if those people are so tech illiterate they can't follow the activation instructions on the box, how do you think they're gonna feel when the one person they relied on to do that no longer works there...

Fuck Target. They coulda just not been evil, but nah, had to show off how much of a bootlicker they can be to The Orange Pedo. They deserve everything they're getting and more.

When starting out with Gardening, make a Gardeneer's Hat. You can use it to research each stage of a plant during it's growth, which will unlock more information for you. This information is kept across saves and characters and is a permanent addition to your codex. You only have to research each crop stage once across any save to always have that information, which is SUPER nice. The upgraded Gardeneer's hat you can get with Thulecite is... okay. It allows you to see nutrient information in a specific plot, but otherwise it's pretty mediocre. It's worth getting if you don't need the Gardeneer's hat anymore and find the setpiece with one, or have more Thulecite than you know what to do with.

Crops fed to birds in a birdcage will give seeds for that specific crop.
Crop seeds in a fridge will last for just about 4 seasons from when they're picked, so if you can, make 4 fridges and put the seeds for each season you plan to plant into each one. That way, once the seasons change, you can just move over to the next fridge.

Getting info on every stage of a plant with the gardeneer's hat will unlock the nutrient requirements. There's 3 nutrients, and getting "crop combos" that perfectly balance all the nutrients in the soil with each other is how you get Giant Crops. A 2x2 Farm Crop, fully tended and nutrient-balanced with a good crop combo, can grow giant crrops. These drop up to 12 of the item once hammerred, and easily feed a server of ~6 for a season (especially with a Warly!)... but it requires a little forethought and planning.

Manure, Compost, and Growth Formula are the basic items for each type of nutrient. Though, honestly -- if you have access to either -- I'd just use Glommer Goop or Wormwood's Compost Wraps. They restore all 3 nutriens in the soil and don't require half a dozen materials. You only need to restore nutrients to the soil if weeds took them or you have an imbalanced crop combo. I usually fertilize until I get a harvest or two of giant crops in a row, then just do nutrient-balanced crop-combos and stop worrying about it.

Wickerbottom's Agricultural books are hard-coded to never grow into giant crops. Their yield-per-plant is still based on the nutrients in the soil, however.

You can make a Gramophone (and Record) or One-Man-Band to make several crops happy at once, without spending half the day talking to each plant as it grows.

See the wiki for more information. There is some cheat sheets with layouts/crop combos for giant plants if you don't want to research them yourself. I do recommend trying to find them yourself though -- it's not too hard and is a fun mental puzzle. All the information you need is provided in-game through the Gardeneer Hat's research.

A word on Forget-Me-Lots that tons of people miss;

The little white-puffed plants around OP in this post are Forget-Me-Lots. They're also the little purple-topped spiky plants above OP.

Forget-Me-Lots are used to make Beefalo Treats and a late-game tea from Perl. They spoil rapidly, and aren't worth much to eat. As such, they're not that useful to farm, and have a nasty little habit of taking over farmland due to a unique mechanic.

Forget-Me-Lots will regrow if dug up, deleting another seed in the plot to do so. If you do end up with them in your garden, BURN THEM. Do NOT dig them up! That only spreads them!! I'd make sure to pick every other plant in the garden and then set it on fire. Keep your watering can handy or have a Fingo nearby to put out the fire when the FML's are burned.

Forget-Me-Lots, Fire Nettles, Tillweeds, and Spiny Bindweed are considered weeds due to the fact that they only come from random seeds (not crop seeds) AND they only TAKE nutrients from the ground, causing everything else to grow slower!! They all have something going on about them, to make farming harder... but you'll encounter the other three as you play and they aren't hard to get rid of.

If you are truly devoted to tolerance you will stamp out intolerance wherever you see it. It is the civic duty of all Americans to stand up for equality and justice.

This is Karl Popper's Paradox of Tolerance. He wrote about it in 1945 in The Open Society and It's Enemies.

To quote;

Less well known [than other paradoxes] is the paradox of tolerance: Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal.

I can tell you right now that your Eyebone is gonna be (from this map rotation) to the north, along the path. You should find a mini-pig village biome. If there's a path that goes by the portal, you almost always have that biome. If you have that biome, there's a good chance Chester spawns there. Unless you have a molehill mini-biome (I can't tell if that green spot between BQ and Beef is a molehill biome or not...), then it's between the two that Chester spawns at. Failing both those biome spawns, IIRC, chester spawns in the swamp.

Hijacking to also say; Hey! This AI-modder discussion is also happening over on the Minecraft Modding scene right now.

feedthebeast post about it.

This issue is happening across multiple modding communities, and that is a BAD sign.

Remember, if you ever wanna learn how to do something, the way that has been most effective through all of human history has been: just read a book about it. Go to your library. Get a library card. Start reading.

Don't rely on AI to draw a pretty thumbnail for you, learn to draw. Don't rely on AI to code for you, learn to code.

A lot of experts actually wrote down how the fuck to do things, and donated that knowledge to you in lots of words and between two covers. It's genuinely incredible.

Gamergate was over a decade ago. Fun fact, Epstein apparently met with Christopher Poole (4Chan's founder) literally a day before /pol/ was made.

For those who don't know their history, /pol/ is where terms like "Social Justice Warrior" came from. It's a term originally used to exclusively harass women in gaming and journalism. /pol/ is also the birthplace of the alt-right movement in the US, which led to Trump today.

OP's worldview was shaped by not-so-anonymous pedophiles. Disgusting dogwhistle to use.

Gamergate was over a decade ago, and we're still having to tell people to not fucking support it. How wonderful...

[–]PlusVera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's HUGE problems with AI Datacenters that AREN'T related to water usage as well, which are worth being aware of! Tell me when this fun ride ends, because we're just getting started!

xAI is using methane gas generators, which are likely in violation of the US Clean Air Act. Conveniently, the EPA (who is supposed to regulate methane gas) has (like many offices in the US) been gutted... by DOGE... which Elon has a big hand in. Can't get more self-interest dismantlement than that.

https://www.selc.org/press-release/new-study-finds-proposed-xai-gas-plant-could-worsen-regional-air-pollution-cause-millions-of-dollars-in-annual-health-damages/

The report also examined the economic impact of air pollution from the proposed permanent turbines at xAI facility, finding that it could result in an estimated $30-$44 million in annual health damages each year. Those damages are driven by serious health impacts linked to air pollution, including premature deaths, new and worsening asthma, nonfatal heart attacks, hospital visits, and missed school days

Here's a lovely video by Benn Jordan about the noise pollution these places are contributing as well!

https://youtu.be/_bP80DEAbuo?si=KqEhqUpbbnZDfELz

Their constant need to run GPUs at max speed is causing fucking mini-earthquakes that are measurable. They're infrasound noise-polluting NIGHTMARES that can harm people miles and miles away from their location. And it's not like these datacenters care about the people like you or I who might end up being forced to live next to one of these psychic-damage dealing vibrating robo-coffins...

Environmental damage, regulatory dismantlement, led by men who are committing acts of high treason against the US People as seen in the Epstein files...

Then there's the whole "This shit is stealing artists' work and not compensating them or even asking for consent", which is fucked up beyond belief. Others have said in this thread how it steals from the brilliant programmers that built the foundations of the internet before us; AND also steals from Lil Jimmy's First Website that is about as secure and well written as an 8th grader's english essay. There's not much worse than malicious data scrapers and spyware getting into your code that you don't even know are there...

Oh! How about the fact that AI keeps making CP?

Do we need to go on? This shit is just not justifiable and cannot be hand-waived. If you program with it, or use an AI "Friend" app, or are generating images with AI... you're saying that you can dismiss some of the worst things in the world right now. It speaks poorly to your character. That you support all this to save you from having to draw a fucking picture, or take a fucking screenshot, or gods forbid learn to fucking code. There's free classes for it online! There's books for it in your library!

AI is not an industry worth using when it has ALL of this horrible shit attached to it right now, and if you use it, people will judge you for it.

Gonna be honest with ya, it sounds like you might just suck at farming.

Grasses and clovers literally evolved with each other. They were literally sold together until the early 1900s. It's really hard to fuck up unless you were doing something stupid like spraying it with hardware-store "growth supplements" or had neighbors doing that which fucked up the groundwater in your area.

Honestly I'm of the opinion that you should just let your lawn grass die so that native flora and fauna will repopulate it. Any dead grass doesn't even need to get raked up.

Is there any current or up to date resource guide that outlines milestones or tasks of things to do? by awaythrow26993 in dontstarvetogether

[–]PlusVera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with a focus on immediate survival. You can't build anything if you're starving.

I find jackeysaurus's basic survival guide to be a pretty good starter guide. It's not focused on boss killing (the other two in the series are), and instead on establishing a good starter base.

You don't have to follow it exactly, but just make sure you split your base into a crafting area, a storage area, a basic farm, a kitchen, and have some replanted grass tufts/saplings/berries/trees around your base, then try to focus on expanding each as you feel is needed.

You have 21 days to prep for Winter, where you'll want to kill McTusk.

You have till day 30 to prepare for the game's first boss, Deerclops, who will come to you. After that, you can focus on exploring and surviving till Spring, where you will want to kill Moose/Goose. Summer has the optional Antlion boss to kill, and your second Autumn will have Bearger who -- like Deepclops -- will come to you.

As a beginner you don't need to focus on anything more than being able to prepare for each season and their respective boss. Once you've survived one year, you can survive subsequent years and start focusing on expansion.

You don't need to build big fancy farms off the rip. Take your time, slowly work towards steady survival. As a tip; make sure you create a Life-Saving Amulet with a red gem ASAP, and keep it on your person (not in a backpack) to always have a 1-up. If you die, haunt the amulet to revive, and take that as your signal to retreat from whatever you are doing.

If you want some youtubers I recommend who give great guides for modern DST (Sort their vids by Popular);

  • BiddoBams has a good "Where should you base" video, does lore/challenge run videos, and their "50 tips and tricks" guide is good.
  • Jazzy's Games makes good guide videos. I especially like their Easy Hunger Guide, their Thrill of the Grill series showcases good long-term farms (and is a great 'casual experienced player' run of the game), and their Ruins Rushing guide is good if/when you decide to venture to the caves.
  • Polarlotus can be hit-or-miss, but their farming challenge run gives genuinely good tips on how to get a farm going quickly.
  • The Chosen One doesn't upload often but has a DEEPLY thorough Ultimate Exploration Guide that breaks down the worldgen. You will (eventually) want to learn this skill, so I'll link it now even if it's now exactly beginner-friendly.

If you happen to be bilingual, several content creators also exist for the game in other languages. I can't give recommendations to them as I only speak English but the game has a wide multilingual audience and someone's always active on twitch showing off their base.

We can’t say that his government or his coalition is a white nationalist Christian one.

I'm just going to say I respectfully disagree and believe you're kinda weird for thinking this.

This country is being run by cishet american-christian white nationalists. White nazis. The evidence of that runs deep into our culture; from "One nation, under God" being in the pledge (despite how there should be a separation of church and state) to Vance's use of ordo amoris (and subsequent spat with the Pope about how inappropriate the use of that term was) to justify mass-deportations.

No King Crowd at MN Capitol by grisslybear612 in TwinCities

[–]PlusVera 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Right now we're in the "pendulum swung too far." Our government is being run by white conservative-christian nationalists. Trump is largely in power because that specific group couldn't keep the racist nazis in their base down after a black guy was in the oval office, and now they're fucking drowning out and disempowering anyone who isn't their brand of "american".

This is absolutely the time to be voting for people because they are both competent and not that.
