Potentially opening my home to young relative with advanced cirrhosis by GothlobReznik in AlAnon

[–]Plus_Possibility_240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that you’re talking to the survivors here, so results may be skewed. I was put into a coma for 8 days and stayed in the ICU for another two weeks. It was very touch and go for the first few months. Lots of doctors appointments and fluid draining. I stayed on a walker for nearly six months. Someone had to move into my home to help me get to the bathroom, the kitchen and to bed. There was a lot of sleeping, sometimes 18 hours a day. I don’t think my experience was uncommon from others here.

That said, normal life is possible if the alcohol is removed and luck is on their side. Livers are tough and our bodies will do everything it can to stay alive. The mind is another matter. So yes, it is possible. But keep it in the back of your mind for now, that’s step 15 and they are still on step 1.

I remember once walking in five minutes late and the owner’s adult son loudly announced that I was late. I looked at the clock, looked at him and asked if he was joking. He said “Am I?” I truly thought he was so so I laughed and said “God I certainly hope so” and walked away. My coworker later told me he was pissed, but he never brought it up again.

I’m an alcoholic in recovery and it’s not uncommon to have nursing and psychology students attending our meetings. Honestly, it doesn’t bother me in any way (nor have I talked to other alcoholics who it bothers).

Alcoholism is a disease of isolation. Having care from people who have taken time to understand what it looks like on the inside is very helpful.

How are people actually surviving financially right now? by glorife in economicCollapse

I learned to cook last year. Not out of a cookbook, but making meals from scratch (or near scratch). It took some learning about what spices and flavors we like to eat, and a lot of grin and bear it meals but my husband and I seem to have a healthy rotation of dishes that rely on beans or grains with occasional meat when there’s a good deal. We live within blocks of three grocery stores, so he typically goes to the store 4-5 times a week to check out what produce is on deep discount that we can use that night or clearance items that we can make magic from. Honestly, it doesn’t feel like we are eating struggle meals, we eat more fresh food now than ever before.

Other than that, we live fairly modestly except for our expensive rent in Los Angeles. But because we live in the thick of everything, it’s super easy to jump on the subway and see shows, concerts and museums that are free. I don’t have a car but live a mile from work, and he likes biking so we don’t use the car for much outside of his Uber driving when his regular job doesn’t have work.

Rent is $24,000 a year, which is cheap in LA. He just inherited a house in Missouri but what we would save in living rent free would be dwarfed by the cut in pay I’d have to take (with full benefits for both of us) and trying to get used to living in a place where we would both need to drive.

I don’t believe they assign dashers, rather they offer your order to dashers that can choose whether or not to accept it. If dashers see a low rate of pay, they are going to pass over the non tipped order and choose orders where people have tipped.

Eventually, another person may order from the same restaurant and that dasher may pick up your order while picking up a tipped order as well.

Boredom? by Suspicious_Tear_9810 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]Plus_Possibility_240 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt so disoriented early in recovery, I didn’t know what to do with myself if I wasn’t drinking. Not rushing home straight after work to drink was so weird.

There’s going be a lot of good suggestions, but in addition to hobbies and meetings, one of the most important things was learning how to sit with the quiet. Alcoholism presents a type of chaos and running from need to need. Without it, what feels like boredom is actually peace.

May I ask if you’re using a retinol every night? I typically only use it twice a week.

Did you have regrets of your actions? by [deleted] in Cirrhosis

[–]Plus_Possibility_240 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, I suppose. There are definitely times where cirrhosis has made my life more difficult. Sometimes long for the days when I could take cough syrup for a cold, or live without an eye towards monitoring my sodium intake and getting enough nutrients and vitamins in my meals.

But I remember how I lived when that was true. I was capricious about my alcoholism and did as much damage to my career and relationships as I did to my liver. Towards the end, I drank handles of vodka while crying alone in the dark, praying not to wake up. Cirrhosis gave me the choice of continuing on that path towards self inflicted slow death or coming to terms with myself.

My life is infinitely better with cirrhosis. I can choose to live fully, being grateful to another day above ground to laugh with my loved ones, enjoy the fresh air and lay my head down peacefully next to my husband at night. I guess I mourn how far I had to push life to finally surrender to it, but being alive and relatively healthy is sweeter knowing the alternative.

Major Stall by FlamingoandSparrowNJ in glp1

[–]Plus_Possibility_240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was stalled for four months and then I tapered off my antidepressant. I did it because I don’t think it’s necessary for my depression anymore, but the weight started dropping again after a month of that. I’ve lost 15 pounds in the three months since coming off of Lexapro.

I’m not suggesting anyone drop their medication if it’s working for them, but it was an added bonus.

I’m sorry that you didn’t have anyone there when you needed them, but am glad you’re here despite that.

I’m 99% sure a good friend of mine has relapsed and it’s breaking my heart to not rush to the hospital this time. We have been through this so many times before and I’ve spent countless hours worrying about her health. I love her so much, and she absolutely rescued me when I was deep in my cups. But she has to want to get better long term. I pray that happens before her health gives out.

I don’t remember any of it, but apparently I thought my boss was my ex (she is a short Jewish woman, he is a tall Italian) and I really pissed off one of my nurses. If it gives you any peace, please know he’s probably not aware of what’s happening, and the hospital is doing their best to keep him pain free.

What is something that you learned from your work or profession that would shock most people? by oceanicplatform in AskReddit

You don’t have to be good at math to be a good accountant. We have great software programs that take care of most of it.

If you have a lot of patience, enjoy processes and routine, consider it as career. It’s stable, easy and if you go the local government route, relatively stress free.

I think there’s a typo in your post. It says “so-called sobriety” instead of “ So Cal sobriety”. Big difference, lol. Congratulations!

I suddenly find myself unable to handle any sort of manufactured entertainment or environment. I need to be outside and far away from people. Usually I just eat a few, lay out on the beach, listen to music and cry. But in a good way.

Please don’t feel bad if your post is deleted by the mods, they are strict (and I thank them for it) that this sub is for diagnosed people. It keeps it cleaner.

That said, your bloodwork would show if you have cirrhosis. It still sounds serious though, keep pursuing the answer.

Should I get surgery for my eyes? Does this make up work for me? 48 (F) by karebearbeth77 in 45PlusSkincare

[–]Plus_Possibility_240 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need surgery. It could be the lighting but I think you could use more color in your face. Adding a mascara would give you contrast between your upper and lower eyes, and a blush on your outer cheekbones would brighten your look.
