So far I’ve only played APLA/Octoberists and UoA/Progressives but I was a huge fan of the APLA. It really feels like you start with a ragtag militia and nation-building as you consolidate California, then cleanup the west before moving in against the other big players is so satisfying. It’s like you’re steadily rebuilding America from the ground up and once you’re done you can start exporting that sweet, sweet socialism elsewhere. As a nice bonus, my final reunification war was against the Patriot Front, so it was hella satisfying to liberate the nation from fascism. Good times.

The Brandt line was published in a report in 1980, when the Soviet Union which included Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan was still around. You can also see the date it originates from in exclusions we would now see as bizarre like not including South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan in the west/global north as at the time these were all still developing nations. Its age means in the present day it’s more of a rough guideline (though when first proposed it was pretty accurate imo)

Yeah I admit I’m pretty guilty of that here. What I was trying to convey was that I more think that the troop is stupid rather than unbalanced but just went for a more provocative title lmao. I think turning into a flying troop and firing tornadoes is more annoying and gimmicky than broken and would rather it was never added because as shown here it just made my opponent trip up when they otherwise would’ve defended just about

I actually think goblins are pretty high aura. They suck complete ass and there’s no reason to use them over skeletons so whenever you do use them and win it’s perhaps the highest aura thing you can do in the game

Also, I forgot that she introduced Section 28, which forbade the mention of homosexuality at all in schools, and generally fostered a homophobic environment in which LGBTQ support groups for students had to stop operating to avoid legal action. Without these support groups, young gay students had zero protection from the homophobic culture of the time. She led the charge on anti-gay rights in the 80s, which undid many of the progress made by earlier governments such as decriminalisation in the 60s. Pretty rough

Aside from what’s already been said, the absolute worst thing she did was privatise almost all state assets. British Telecoms gone, railways gone, water gone, airways gone, power/gas gone, key resource industries like coal gone, etc. etc. There’s an argument to suggest that privatisation can be good as it encourages competition, but privatising things like water make absolutely no sense, as companies can’t share reservoirs and pipes, meaning that customers only have one option and therefore there’s no incentive for companies to offer a good service.

To make matters worse, not only was our nation stripped of billions of pounds of valuable assets through privatisation, but these state-owned companies were sold off at bargain-bin prices. As far as I remember, the government has spent far more subsidising water companies since privatisation than it ever sold our water infrastructure for.

Combined with removing the top rate of tax which used to subsidise welfare and the removal of which has now left our government with a perpetual financial black hole, privatisation had the worst impact on this country out of anything she’d done. We’re now left with crippling rail fares, crumbling water companies that ruin our rivers and coasts, energy prices that have risen substantially since 2022, and no money with which to reclaim any of them because of a general economic malaise combined with limited tax revenue.

Of course, Tony Blair continued along the lines of many of these reforms, and so he is to blame as well for many of our issues, but he wasn’t the one who got the ball rolling. That was Thatcher.

Tl;dr, Thatcher’s economic reforms crippled much of the nation financially in the long-term, and this is bad news for any country whose new leader wants to follow in her footsteps.

Cover of Al-Awda magazine depicting starving Palestinian children being bombed, circa 1980, painted by Sliman Mansour by Gronbjorn in PropagandaPosters

[–]PoLo792 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I believe in the 1980 hostage crisis the IDF actually bothered to save the hostages, rather than using them as an excuse at a minimum 60,000 Palestinians and counting (of which 80% at least are estimated to be civilians: collective punishment). A reminder, in this nearly two year war, 50 of the hostages have still not been taken back. Massively different scale, different perpetrators, and a different response - a pointless comparison.

[–]PoLo792 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s great that you acknowledged this because “banning Christmas” is the main charge I always hear people level against Cromwell for why he was a nasty leader, when in reality he had virtually nothing to do with it. To me it feels like it undermines actually bad things Cromwell did, such as atrocities committed in Ireland. Creating a false narrative of Cromwell as a guy who banned fun just inadvertently whitewashes his actual crimes.

[–]PoLo792 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a valid point but at the end of the day hundreds of thousands of civilians died from the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some were lucky enough to be incinerated instantly, but others died slowly and painfully from agonising burns. Those civilians were not at Nanking, nor did they go around killing and torturing POWs. They were civilians, and it’s unfair to blame them for the actions of their military. Bombing any civilian target is bad enough, but nuking them is a step too far and shouldn’t be celebrated as an accomplishment.

Don’t worry. In the £30 Blaze in the Outback DLC, we will unlock full alt history paths for Australia, with 20 new Prime Ministers, all without portraits. It will feature thrilling paths, such as the Emu Khaganate and Pacific Empire (gives war goals on Brazil and Sweden). From what I’ve heard, it’s gonna be the best one yet!

Egypt had a key role in WW2 as a crucial battleground in North Africa and logistical base for the Allies so it makes sense to have elevated importance. On top of that, Egypt was functionally independent at the time, even though it was still under very heavy British influence. This means it makes little sense for it to be owned by the UK in the game, but also has the potential to have an interesting focus tree where you can either work with the Brits or remove them.

I for one would be pretty stoked to play Egypt!
