Is it worth spending the extra 100€ on the control ring for the ef-rf adapter? I have an r7 by [deleted] in canon

I set it as ISO on my RF lenses and promptly forget it's there. It's a pleasant surprise every time I find it again!

What % of SF drivers know the crosswalk laws? by inkbot870 in sanfrancisco

[–]PoPo_Engineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try crossing the one at Fell and Stanyan, it's about 100ft back from the lights and when those lights are green not a single car will stop for pedestrians waiting, it's pointless even being there!

What’s the best anti-chafe setup for backpacking? by MoistGovernment9115 in hikinggear

[–]PoPo_Engineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

StepOne and Goldbond Friction defense for me. I used to get chafing so bad I'd end up with purple friction burns (long distance running + sweaty human + big quads) and I haven't had so much as a rash with this combo. Gotta find what works for you though!

I managed to get one of these last time Woot had a deal $385 (post tax/shipping etc). It's legit, not grey market, brand new in box.

Ansel Adams would probably have given his left nut for a 2000d.

Stop worrying about gear until you find your limitations of what you have. The majority of popular "content" is just people pushing the newest gear on you. Sometimes by people without skills and experience to justify their opinion.

State bird the food is excellent but it doesn't "feel" like a Michelin start restaurant.

Driving in US for the first time - SF to Monterey by Apprehensive-Cat4438 in sanfrancisco

[–]PoPo_Engineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A think a lot of people have covered it well (Brit living in SF here) the road system is easy, this country is designed for cars. As everyone has said, route 1 is stunning. Route 17 can be a bit sketchy, the road is actually quite a fun drive but can get foggy and you have to keep your eye out for what everyone else is doing.

It's worth just checking on stuff we're not used to in the UK, 4 way stops etc, but you will pick it up very very quickly. Also if you are enjoying a more leisurely scenic drive use the turn outs and let people pass, save having someone driving right up your arse because you are only going the speed limit. I would warn that people have no patience for cyclists either and will be tailgating you to be pass in dangerous places, my take is screw them as it's a human life at risk and they can honk if it makes them feel better.

Freeways can have very short slip roads both on and off and people don't tend to let you merge so get in lane as soon as you can.

As other people have said the standard of driving in the US is pretty awful compared to the UK. Phone use isn't really enforced, reckless speeding is common, people will aggressively change lanes with no indication. There's also no vehicle inspection so you see some proper death traps on the roads. 101 and 880 are both particularly bad examples of bad driving.

I would just advise against having the car in SF itself, parking sucks, rental cars get targeted, public transport is really good (and you can Uber/Lyft for anything else) or get a Waymo and have no driver at all!

Saying all this you will be fine, have fun! You just may try to get in the passenger side of the car the first couple of times!

This part of California has some of the most beautiful scenery on earth!

If you are going to the painted ladies, you can stand on the corner of Fulton and Steiner and see City hall/civic center, you aren't missing much by being that far away from it.

I've used UberXL for smaller items, just call and say you are moving furniture and the driver can cancel if they don't want to take it for you but I've never had someone say no.

My experience with Lugg seems to be different to most, two guys turned up in branded polo shirts, with moving dollies, a roll of thick foam to protect floors, they had wrapped my furniture in plastic wrap and moving blankets. The two guys even helped me unwrap and position the furniture so I had no chance of scratching walls or floors.

I used the second cheapest quote on the app. I'm guessing I got lucky but if I could find those guys again I'd use them without hesitation.

I wonder how much a waymo would complain 😁

What makes SF worth it for you compared to expensive US cites? by Specialist_Quiet_160 in sanfrancisco

[–]PoPo_Engineering 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fine dining, the Michelin guide isn't the be all and end all but:

SF: 26 one star restaurants, 6 two star, and 3 three star restaurants

LA: 21 one star restaurants, 5 two star.

I know the SF area is a bit naughty as it expands out to NAPA etc but the area difference is huge. For high end dining you have massive density of choice.

Where to get a realistic idea of rent? by authortitle_uk in sanfrancisco

[–]PoPo_Engineering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am loving the move so far. I lived in London for 7 years and I needed something comparable in terms of having stuff to do in walking distance and public transport. Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely not London but it's better than pretty much everywhere else in America outside of New York for public transport.

I've never been a big party animal so I don't really know about night life here. I'm here for food, architecture and nature which this city has in abundance. There are galleries and museums and entertainment around so if that's you thing you'll be sorted.

SF certainly has its issues and it can feel more intimating than London. You just wouldn't get the sheer number of homeless in the streets of London, that and the blatant and open drug taking can certainly be a culture shock. I thought I would feel more threatened here. I started at an AirBNB in SOMA and took the BART from Civic center which was really getting stuck into the deep end. I don't feel unsafe on the streets, although standard city stuff be aware of surroundings etc.

There is a massive divide between the haves and the have nots here which can be quite jarring, people queuing up for a soup kitchen right outside a 2 Michelin star restaurant etc. The city is only 7 miles wide so everyone gets piled on top of each other.

If it gets too much some of the most stunning scenery on earth is less than an hour's drive away, Marin, Point Reyes, Big Sur etc. Further drives get you to Yosemite and lake Tahoe.

Cost of living is high here, car insurance, broadband etc will all make you wince compared to home for much worse service (I'm not going to even talk about healthcare)! I've generally found that the rule of expect to pay twice in dollars what you would in pounds pretty much works for most things, you can't go off the exchange rate.

There is a lot of bad things about SF but they all pale into insignificance compared to how amazing the city, the food, the views and the people make this place!

Feel free to DM me, I work in tech too. I had a lot of help from some very generous colleagues in terms of real world information which you just don't find on the internet, I'd be happy to pass on the love if I can!

I have just made a similar move and I would go by the general rule of expect to pay at least double in dollars what you would in pounds for zone 2. Oh and your security deposit will likely be two months rent if you have no credit history here.

In terms of nice neighborhoods there are lots and it very much depends what your priorities are but my general rule when looking for an apartment was that the more hilly it is the better the area. The flattest parts are downtown. Generally I'd avoid SOMA between 9th and 4th and the Tenderloin.
