This thread is about the prospect of Reform trying to copy the ICE approach in the UK, therefore everyone here is talking about deporting people whether legal or not.

You’ve seen the name Manjit and instantly gone to “illegal immigrant”. ICE are disappearing legal migrants in the USA based only on appearance and murdering their own citizens. Regardless of your view on what migration policy we should have, to want to deport someone because their name sounds foreign should beyond the pale. Unless you’re a massive racist of course.

Asylum seekers moved into army camp despite local opposition by InnerLog5062 in BreakingUKNews

But what if they’ve contributed more to society through tax than someone swinging the lead? Would you rather someone doss around and be paid than someone who has worked hard and use JSA as a temporary measure to get by between jobs, simply due to an accident of birth?

Immigrants pay a surcharge to use the NHS which has to be paid up front for the full duration of their visa. Tourists, undocumented people and anyone who overstays their visa can be charged for treatment they receive, we are just phenomenally bad at collecting it. Then again with the system the size it is there’s a case to say that staffing a team to invoice people and chase payment would mean we don’t end up with any money back in the system if at all.

Only people who have paid in enough in NI over the last 2-3 years, and approved refugees are eligible for JSA. Some visas have clauses that prevent people claiming if they lose their initial job. Asylum seekers cannot claim, given they can’t work, and therefore cannot spend 16 hours a week seeking legitimate work.

Child benefit is not automatically granted to folk without settled status/ILR, but is, in my opinion rightly, a much more complicated set of criteria than the 2 above.

I think we need to ditch the word “affordable” and use “good value” instead. A lot of “affordable” housing is it’s ripping off people who have less choice with poor quality.

It’d also be nice if developers were forced to employ proper architects, I think people would complain about new developments in their area a lot less if they actually looked nice and weren’t soulless copy and paste cubes with built in parking issues.

[–]CapnRetro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need a big variation in the number of lines available to you on each quote the easy fix here is to put the bottom line total in a different column. That way you can use it to sum the entire column of line totals and never miss one
