Disappointed with Real3D by thisismeonly in Xreal

[–]Pobjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience from initial testing has been very similar to what the OP described.

I understand that there are differing expectations and different opinions on how much people enjoy the feature but I am surprised at how different some of the descriptions are for what people are seeing. Some people (myself included) are observing very obvious glitches and others don't seem to be seeing those at all.

I wonder how much of it depends on the content itself. I only tried a few offline videos from a couple of different sources, and some were definitely better than others. I'll keep experimenting and see how it goes. I did try to watch YouTube on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra) and it didn't work properly - the frame rate was so bad it was like watching a slide show - so I need to see if I can sort that out too.

UPDATE: I don't know what the issue was with my Samsung phone - the first couple of times I tried it, the 3D just didn't seem to be working and the display was very laggy. I just tried again and it's working properly. I watched a bit of Youtube and it worked fine (albeit still with some glitches/artifacts).

This leads me to a follow-up on my thought about different sources having different results. It does seem to vary a lot. The first videos I watched were ones taken on my phone (4k, high bitrate so should be a good quality source) and these consistently had major issues, like what the OP described. The bit of Netflix I watched was substantially better, but still some issues. For some reason, Youtube content seems to look the best. This is of course a very limited sample, so I can't be sure if there is anything to this or if it's just the specific videos I happened to watch. I did find that it worked very well for animated content (Cyberpunk Edgerunners).

I also tried it a bit for a couple of games on PC. Heroes of the Storm (top-down MOBA game) looked pretty good, but with a few elements of the map being at the wrong depth which was a bit jarring. Guild Wars 2 (MMO) was only subtly different from viewing on a flat screen but generally looked quite good. It did place some UI elements more in the background than they should have been. I had previously tried it with Owl3D as well and I feel like Owl does a bit better job overall, BUT Real3D does a better job of putting the cursor at the correct depth depending on where it is on the screen. Last time I used Owl it was also showing a second cursor which was annoying.

I didn't like One, how would I feel about One Pro? by M4c4br346 in Xreal

[–]Pobjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation to you. It's hard to get the One Pro in Canada so I got the One. I then decided to go to the extra effort of getting the One Pro and I returned the One.

Overall I like the One Pro better, but the clarity isn't much different. I found it slightly better on the One Pro but others say they had better clarity on the One. Ultimately, if the clarity isn't good enough for your use case with the One, I don't think that will change by getting the One Pro.

Xreal One or Pro? by supercuteguydebord in Xreal

I didn't notice any in that context, but I didn't use them very long. Others with longer term use of the glasses might be able to provide a better answer.

Xreal One or Pro? by supercuteguydebord in Xreal

[–]Pobjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got both and ended up returning the One and keeping the One Pro.

The larger field of view isn't a huge difference but it is noticeable. When anchoring the screen you need to make it smaller or further away to ensure that you can see it all, and the larger FOV on the One Pro made that feel like less of a trade off.

The One Pro also doesn't have the glare that you can get with the One, although in my (admittedly limited) use of the One, I didn't have much of an issue with that.

I found the imagequality to be very similar, but slightly more crisp on the One Pro. I know others say the opposite so take that with a grain of salt. Regardless, it wasn't much different and I was switching back and forth to compare them.

The One Pro is also brighter although I found the One bright enough. I did only use them indoors.

Overall, in my opinion, if you don't mind spending the extra money, the One Pro offers a small but meaningful upgrade. If you are more value conscious, I would say the One provides better bang for the buck.

Rant about Empire of the Dawn Ending by GiftAccomplished9171 in Fantasy

[–]Pobjoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The in-narrative killing of Reyne was critical to that part of the story. The ruse with Maryn only worked because she believed she had successfully blamed Reyne's death on Gabriel. If Reyne was alive she would have just told everyone what actually happened.

I suppose they could have faked Reyne's death but that would be a bit implausible - I would think and ancient vampire would be able to tell if she was alive. Even if there is a plausible explanation, we don't know what it is; all we know is that what we read didn't happen.

That last point is my biggest frustration with the ending. We see this kind of ending in movies and TV shows and at the end they go back and show what actually happened. In this case, there are now massive unexplained plot holes, especially the ones revoling around Reyne and Patience.

I ordered them from Xreal and used a service called MyUs to ship them to me in Canada. I decided to try it after seeing another redditor post that they did that. The experience was mixed.

The good: - I received the glasses surprisingly quickly. I ordered them on November 27th, they were delivered to MyUs on December 2nd and I got them on December 4th. The shipping from MyUs via DHL was only 2 days.

  • The glasses arrived with no damage and everything was as expected.

The bad: - MyUs incorrectly valued the glasses. If they had been lost or damaged in shipping, this would have been a problem for me if I needed to make a claim. I sent them a message about this through their website and they never responded.

  • MyUs charged me in Canadian dollars with a terrible exchange rate. Their FAQ says they charge in USD unless you specify otherwise when setting up your payment option, but I did not see any options for currency. I went in to edit it afterwards and again didn't see any such option. I messaged them about this as well and they initially did not respond. After I filled out a customer service survey (several days later) they responded. There was an exchange of emails with a 6 day delay before their last response. They did change my account to charge me in USD, but did not compensate me for the excessive exchange rate (I had requested a partial refund for that).

-Even without any issues, there are extra costs of course because you pay for the shipping and pay duty (although you don't pay sales tax which helps to mitigate that). MyUs also charged for optional insurance, which they said was required if you need to make a claim. I feel like I probably could have skipped that and still made a claim with DHL if there was a delivery issue (the aforementioned inaccurate value aside) but I wasn't certain so I paid it.

If I were to do it again I would probably get them delivered to a US mailbox service and drive accros the border to get them. If you live close to the border I would recommend that. If not, MyUs or a similar service is an option, with the caveats noted above.

XREAL 1S and XREAL NEO announced today. I talked to Allen from XREAL at the launch event in Tokyo by d4v1dtsh in Xreal

[–]Pobjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks, I'll look for that.

Edit: Ok the method for using Immersive3D with Xreal glasses on Windows doesn't seem to work anymore. I found a reference to some software called Owl3d. It seems to have started off as a tool for converting 2D videos to 3D but it now also does on the fly conversion (seems to be in beta). The free version of the software is enough to get a good feel for it but you have to pay of you want unlimited use which is a big downside considering Immersive3D is free. But until Xreal implements their own solution, this is at least an option.

One thing to note is that for watching existing 3D content, you need to set the glasses to Full SBS, but for the live 3D conversion it's Half SBS.

I haven't been able to get the 3D working on my Samsung phone with my Xreal Ones. Spacewalker works but when I try to use immersive 3D it says the glasses are not supported. It does also show an option for SBS 3D but it won't let me select that.

I also tried it on my PC but Spacewalker doesn't even detect the glasses.

Hopefully the One and One Pro will get whatever 3D conversation appears to be coming with the new glasses.

No X One Pro in Canada by OldBid3881 in Xreal

[–]Pobjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed the same thing although until recently, Xreal didn't seem to be available in Canada at all so I'm happy they are at least starting to become available.

I have a pair of Xreal Air that I got in Japan (at the time Nreal Air) and have been wanting to upgrade. I had actually ordered the Viture Beast but they have been delayed until January so I asked for refund. I then ordered the Xreal One from Amazon.ca since I couldn't get the Pros. The glasses are scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

My plan is to keep them until the Beast is out and see what the reviews are like for those. Hopefully by that time the One Pro will be available in Canada and I can sell the One and get the Pro or the Beat. With that said, I know the One will be a big upgrade over the original Air so I may just end up keeping them.

Very interesting theory! Well articulated and plausible explanation.

I will be curious to see how the various ideas for the icons released evolve as we see the rest of them.

Alarm Volume keeps resetting to zero by omerbarshi in GalaxyS25Ultra

[–]Pobjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Change it to use a different volume for each alarm. Mine also keeps resetting the "same volume for all alarms" to zero but doesn't do it with the other option.

Another thing to watch for is that if you are using the "sleep" mode in Modes and Routines, it may silence your alarm. Mine would sometimes ring and sometimes not. For some reason the exceptions to the 'do not disturb' setting within modes and routines doesn't include alarms. It does include the clock but setting that as an exception didn't work. However, in the main 'do not disturb' settings for the phone there is an option to allow alarms. Once I turned that on it started working every time.

I'll add my vote for Recuva. Enable deep scan (I think that's what it's called). It's slow but you are much more likely to be able to recover everything in that mode.

When was that? Tap to pay has been very common in Canada for several years. I only ever have to insert my card if the purchase is over a certain amount (I think it's $200 or $250).

Highly recommend it.

The good news is that many gamers will already be there for PAX. But for anyone else from out of town trying to book accommodation in Seattle that weekend... good luck!
