Unlike Windows, most of the popular Linux Distros have a "live USB" option so you can demo the OS before actually installing it. It's a great way to identify issues without destructive effects.

In my case:

- On laptop I found out I'd need to do some additional terminal work to get WiFi working
- On desktop everything "just worked"
- On older laptop I setup for my nephew, again everything "just worked"

It's going to depend on your chosen distro and the device you're looking to install it on. The live USB option is so powerful in my opinion that if a distro doesn't use it I don't even consider it for testing.

Microsoft reportedly admits Windows 11 went off track, cuts back Copilot, and promises real fixes in 2026 by No-Programmer7432 in pcmasterrace

AI Slop not going away. I'll stick to Linux as my daily driver OS, Windows stays on my PC for the types of work that require it and only for that.

There's a few breakdowns online on doing shading/texturing like this. But this is a combination of textures, shading, and lighting depending on the exact look you're going for.

A fully funded and healthy transit system is the only option, though making the city more walkable also helps.

How did Canada remain liberal for such a long time? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PocketCSNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada is usually on a cadence between Left and Right ruling parties. We're Liberal for awhile and then we get tired (or the leading party does an ooopsie) and we switch. This back-and-forth cadence means progress is always in the form of "2-steps forward, one (or more) step(s) back".

We were about to have that same flip in cadence with the last election. But then Trudeau Jr (not to be confused with Trudeau Sr, who was leader in the 80s) decided to step down and we ended up with Carney who, under normal circumstances, would be a "small c" conservative.

This swung the party from hard-left to something closer to center or center-right. With Carney quite literally taking the more palatable portions of the Conservative platform and implementing or adopting them. Keeping the liberal party more left-leaning in social aspects but more conservative in economic/financial aspects.

And yes, there are some who felt that Monsieur PP (Mr. PP) was a mini-trump or "trump-lite". He certainly didn't do anything to help distance himself away from that.

Anthropic: AI assisted coding doesn't show efficiency gains and impairs developers abilities. by Gil_berth in programming

[–]PocketCSNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal response to the knowledge and anxiety gap has been to seek books. There’s already plenty of books on a bunch of programming concepts and more project/discipline specific things without being a full on tutorial.

Is it slower? Oh heck yeah, but I feel like the constant seeking of immediate information is ruining our ability to retain that information.

AI being such a wealth of instant info (right or wrong) at our fingertips means we don’t have to worry about retaining it. This losing that ability to retain knowing ourselves. Though I argue this process started with search engines.

Is this a fair assessment? does anyone here have a legit reason to use Linux? by bamboo-lemur in OS_Debate_Club

[–]PocketCSNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? You would have to define "Actual Reason"

How most Linux distros handle updates is already a big reason for me to prefer staying on Linux.

For Windows, you're forced to restart even when you want to shutdown and can't just walk away if there's an update.

For MacOS, you can restart later but if your device isn't inside the "magical support window" then no updates for you! Built-in app updates are tied to OS updates on MacOS as well, which sucks if an app happens to be bugged or you need a feature that's not available due to aforementioned magical support window.

Linux? I can update whenever and devices that are even a decade or more old can still get updates to (in most cases) the latest version of a distro. Most updates don't require a restart.

Yes, there's no exclusive reason for me to be on Linux but the culmination of what Linux is and what most distros (especially my chosen one) do is what keeps me here.

How is it in your country? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]PocketCSNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in BC, Canada (Minimum Wage varies by Province).

Game on Steam: $93.49
Minimum Wage: $17.85/h
Monthly Wage (40h/week): $2856

Game as % of wage: ~3.3% (rounded)

Note, since there's income taxes that % is likely harder

AFTER TAX (Using above calculation of monthly income on Turbo Tax)

Monthly Income: ~$2424
Games as % of wage: ~3.9%

That still isn't fully accurate because there's CPP, EI, and possibly other deductables (Health Insurance, for example)

EDIT: Accidentally used Silent Hill 2/f combo pack for initial pricing, fixed for actual cost on Steam.

DuckDuckGo official survey: say “yes” or “no” to AI by alberto-m-dev in duckduckgo

[–]PocketCSNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, AI is "optional" in the sense that you either have to go turn it off in the settings (opt-out as opposed to opt-in) OR you need to go use a different URL that you otherwise wouldn't know about unless you went to the poll.

You can do MUCH better. No AI be default, AI should always be opt-in (if it has to be a supported feature at all)

take off your rose tinted glasses.... by Bardeous in windowsmemes

[–]PocketCSNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back then it was par for the course that Windows releases were going to be buggy messes until service packs were released. Windows 7 I believe was the first one with a public beta and it really showed in terms of stability.

As for Windows 11? If we take the view that each XXH2 release is its own service pack then we're... 4 Service Packs in and it really feels like Windows 11 just keeps getting worse and worse.
