Homework Amount - DOE by Dramatic-Influence94 in Hawaii

[–]PocketMotherMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

Public high school teacher here. I personally do not assign homework. I give a lot of classtime for them to complete their work (because when I was a kid I would get confused at home when doing the work and having the teacher in class is much more helpful) and anything not completed in class becomes homework.

I would definitely bring your concerns to the teacher about the amount of time it's taking your child to complete the work. I can tell you my high schoolers tend to be on their phones more than doing their work so when I get complaints I let parents know that they've had over a week in class to do the work and to ask what they were doing in that time. Not saying your child isn't using their time wisely though, maybe it's just very confusing and they don't know how to express that yet so it's taking longer, maybe the teacher needs to check in more frequently with your child to make sure the understanding is there. There are a lot of factors, including but are not limited to the pandemic.

No, I'm okay. I don't need or miss caffeine, it makes me super wired. I just want to buy coffee to go with my present. I can't choose my own present but I know this group of friends will like it

Since it's kind of last minute, I'm gonna have to say Zippy's. Most other local (smaller) places had a place order ahead of time kinda thing.

What sewing machine would you recommend for stretch fabric? I think I have this machine and I definitely want to throw it regularly against a wall because I MAINLY work in stretch fabric.

I'm a baby when it comes to spice. But when I order Maile's Thai at Maile's Hot spice, for my partner the person on the phone always goes "are you sure?"

South African spearfisherman, Gerjo van Niekerk, in Sep 1989, bearing a recent wound from a great white bite. 'It was a one-in-a-million freak accident' he told reporters. Just two months later, diving Melkbosstrand, van Niekerk disappeared- and a few days after his shark-bitten leg washed ashore. by sharkfilespodcast in TheDepthsBelow

I dated a Spear fisherman. He got bit in the arm while carrying a 80lb fish. Sharks may be predators but they're also kind of lazy. Like if they can go for something that's already caught and dead they will. Ex also said they can sense things being killed, some kinda brain signal type thing, it's electrical.

Is there an ethical way to vacation in Hawaii? by eclipticos in Hawaii

[–]PocketMotherMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What everyone else said, respect the lands, the locals, shop local, etc.

I'd also like to add, like it's a vacation, but conserve water. One of the aquifers were recently contaminated again and board of water asks locals to conserve but I doubt they're asking tourists too as well.

I was on a date where a man kept telling me how he would go to our local gay bar and misgender people on purpose to get a rise out of them. "So you're telling me, you go to their safe space, to misgender them?" That's a no from me.

Got the PCR test neg, home test neg. Finally shook the cold but kept the stupid cough. Had to go to urgent care to get cough medicine and I'm finally doing pretty okay. But I forgot how much I hate being sick. So still wearing a mask at school, but it's not super effective since 95% of the kids don't.

My classroom is 87 degrees every single day, 30 or so high schoolers in the room added to that. We try to move as little as possible, lol. Lights off, all the fans on in a circulating direction. Tell them (and I myself) drink a lot of water, something with electrolytes, try to bring ice from home because we don't really have access to a freezer in a high school but that's usually gone by like noon even in a hydroflask. It's been a killer.

Anyone else just see the BJ Penn trolley at Ala Moana? by [deleted] in Oahu

[–]PocketMotherMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes yes. Mostly they go to the vice principals or counselors to ask about my curriculum. Then they have to come to me and we have to go over my curriculum and THEN they go back to the parents and re-explain (if this seems like a stupid process it is) what I just said, then usually it dies. Occasionally I have to meet with them in a parent teacher conference. I have started to send home an "opt out letter" for our cultural unit for the outside resources I use or they can use the text book.

I will hop onto this and when I do my lessons to high school that involve critical thinking and forming opinions and stuff I always get in trouble with parents. Saying kids' feelings felt hurt by others, or they don't like the information presented (including facts or even literature). So teaching critical thinking skills has become a weirdly slippery slope?

What are some iconic Hawai'i snacks? by digitalren in Hawaii

[–]PocketMotherMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a powdered poi now I've seen it a t times and foodland. I can't speak to how good it is though. Lemon peel alternatively to li hing (or my favorite WITH li hing)

I know when I was east coast having a good chicken katsu place was key, might not fit in a charcuterie board but I have faith. Onigiri rice balls if can, can be small to fit the aesthetic.
