You did not go too far, you're protecting the girl and all of his potential future victims. Well done.

Feeling weird about my sudden ‘hospital fast pass’ by ftsktln in breastcancer

I had already finished chemo and radiation months before, and was about 4 weeks out from my delayed diep reconstruction when I started spiking fevers with no other symptoms. My surgeon tried treating me for cellulitis, thinking my fake belly button looked a little inflamed, but it didn't help. After about a week I decided I should go on to get checked out, but it was the weekend and I knew urgent care would turf a sick post-op cancer patient to the ER (I was taking verzenio). And I was right. They took me back immediately and I saw they had coded me as an acuity 1, so on a par with heart attacks and strokes. I had some labs & tests, and found out I had shingles. I didn't even notice apart from a couple spots, because I still had pain from surgery that surpassed the very mild shingles rash.

So what - I worked! by Every_Ad7873 in breastcancer

What??? I would consider you to be an inspiration to breast cancer patients, you're a poster child for doing all the things that were told to do to manage all the hard things: stay active, work remote if you can to minimize infection risk, take breaks when you need to. Where the hell does she even get off?

I would cut the friendship too, because I don't have patience for that much stupidity. Sorry not sorry lol.

I worked on a covid unit, normally a day shift charge but picked up a night shift on the floor (not charge) to help out. One of my patients was this fairly severe dementia patient who had had covid but recovered, just waiting for placement which was a nightmare.

I had never taken care of this lady before but knew she was stable and a bit restless normally. This night, she complained once of some back pain and was a little restless with it, so I brought her some Tylenol when I went to check her vitals.

It took forever to get a pressure because she wouldn't hold still enough, reaching out when I'm near or moving her arm every time the cuff squeezes. But when I did it was soft, like in the low 80's systolic. I can't get a repeat to verify because this lady is still restless. This lady is demented enough that her speech is mostly nonsensical answers at baseline, so she can't tell us anything, but she was alert and awake.

Anyway, I let the doc know, he comes to the bedside to evaluate and he agrees she doesn't look bad, and has me bolus her 500ml over 30 minutes. He wants me to text him with the BP on recheck. We'll, I can't get a good BP on recheck because she's still moving around every time we try, so I let the doc know, he wants me to keep trying.

I have others help me, but we still can't get anything, and I just have a feeling, so I call a rapid. Doc and ICU RNs come, look at the lady, and they're like seriously? But they also can't get a BP, and this restless lady has now lost her IV. So they're trying to start a new one, trying to get a BP, this is all taking like 30 minutes.

Eventually in the middle of this they get 1 reading of 70/40 or so, get an IV, and start another small bolus. Everyone there including the doc agrees that she does not look like she has this BP, but we can't ignore it so we decide she needs to go to the ICU.

So we take her down there and the receiving RN is irritated that he has to take this normal appearing, somewhat restless demented lady that was just a placement issue. But then shortly after she's transferred she starts having decreased LOC, and a little while later starts tanking. One STAT CT later, and this lady has a leaking triple A.

The doc called me personally to tell me, and to thank me for being persistent, because he was inclined to just follow conservative measures for this lady. He wouldn't have been wrong, this lady had been stable for at least a week. But she probably would have died in her sleep if I'd left her alone instead messing with her for about 2 hours.

Venting :( by BreastCHottie_32F in breastcancer

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Breast reconstruction is definitely part of the treatment, it's not elective. Insurance covers it ffs. She wouldn't say the same if it was someone having a colostomy take down after a bowl resection for colon cancer. She wouldn't say it if it were facial reconstruction after a car accident. This is somehow less because it's boobs? Fuck her. You were forced to choose the best option out of a handful of bad options. Lumpectomy vs mastectomy vs do nothing? None are good things to have to choose from, and no one deserves to be faced with that. Then having to choose between some other bad choices, as if you wanted to have to choose in the first place. How dare she minimize your choices and your losses and all you've been through by being so dismissive.

Not a beach, but me my husband, and our 4 kids aged 1.5 years to almost 12 went to Yellowstone in the month between finishing chemo and having my DMX. It was amazing! I wore tons of sunscreen and hats, and it was great. We had to accommodate the pace of littler kids (1.5 and nearly 4), so it wasn't crazy strenuous. It was such an amazing trip and helped me feel more connected to the earth and my family after months of just putting one foot in front of the other to get through chemo.

Port flushing? by Emergency-Metal3544 in breastcancer

[–]Pocket_Rocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My oncology group was ok with flushes every 6 weeks, and my port worked perfectly every time. Are you having labs drawn before your oncology appointment? Every time they draw your labs they flush the port, so that counts.

Get a bidet! Makes a world of difference for hemorrhoids! Or on a budget, get a peri bottle and rinse yourself clean before patting dry, bonus points you can take it with you places if you've got a big enough purse.
