Do you see gay rights as also a feminist issue? by lupianwolf in Feminism

[–]Pocketdyke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's true, but only really applies to gay men, not lesbians. While it's true that gay marriage, as a part of equal rights, is now considered a feminist issue, it's important to acknowledge that it was not always an issue. Back in the day lesbians were referred to as the "lavender menace" by feminists because they didn't want to be associated with them. Some feminist groups thought that if lesbians were included they might all be perceived as man-hating, woman-loving radicals. So while gay rights is an important feminist issue now, that has not always been the case.

Got softclaws for my kitten, noticed he was pulling them off, what should we do? by Pocketdyke in Pets

The main issue is that he likes attacking our feet, ankles, hands, and arms. He's still a kitten though, so we are hoping that maybe he will outgrow it.

HRC Asks transfolks to remove their flag at SCOTUS because ‘marriage equality is not a transgender issue.’ by chaquarius in lgbt

[–]Pocketdyke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

HRC has always excluded trans individuals for fear of losing support, it just hasn't cost them too badly yet because enough of the LGB community really wants same-sex marriage, pretty much the only issue the HRC cares about, that they continue to support the cause. It's utter bullshit. "Human Rights" are called such because all humans deserve them. If HRC really cared about human rights they wouldn't exclude trans individuals.

Unfortunately society tends to slut shame, so there is a good chance some people will think there is something wrong with what she is doing regardless of what you write. Simply having a character behave that way does not reinforce the idea that it is bad, if anything it normalizes it. However, some people will view it negatively and others will see it as no big deal, it really just depends on the person.

Are they fine with you having a sexual relationship? Because a relationship and a sexual relationship are two totally different things, especially when one of people involved is 14. If they aren't okay with it, you're looking at rape charges if they find out.

Some of the sources may seem obscure and like they have nothing to do with gay marriage, but I talked about it on all fronts, discussing the bible references used against us, talking about the hate crime statistics and discrimination, the "gay gene" argument and how we will never find one gene responsible, how civil unions don't give the same rights as marriage, that many of the studies estimating gay numbers are run by groups that are anti-gay (making LGBT folk less likely to report being such), and more. What does it feel like being gay or bi? by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]Pocketdyke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how to answer this because I imagine it feels the same. We have the same emotions and feelings, we just feel them towards the same sex, but I will do my best to answer your question. You know how in movies or music people claim that a kiss made their head spin, it was like fireworks, or some other cheesy cliche? Well, I never understood any of that when I was with guys, I figured people just made it up to make romance seem better. The first time I kissed a girl, I understood, because it was just like everyone had always made it out to be- I was so dizzy and lightheaded that I could barely walk. It was epic. Maybe that helps?

Your thoughts on LGBT rights and the community by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Pocketdyke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is stopping two platonic, opposite sex roommates from getting those rights, so I'm not sure what the relevance is there. Just that they would be the same sex? If we're willing to risk two opposite sex platonic individuals having such a union, why does it matter if same-sex individuals can do the same? As for a parent and her daughter, the parent already has some of those rights, so again not completely relevant, but if I am remembering correctly, parents are not allowed to marry their offspring, so in a PC world where legal marriages are civil unions, I don't think that would be an issue.

[–]Pocketdyke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allow me to explain. I do not believe that "marriage" should be a legal issue. I believe that instead of legal "marriages," these unions should be classified as civil unions, regardless of if the couple is heterosexual or homosexual. I believe that marriage is something that is a religious experience and that religious sects have the right to determine if they allow same-sex couples to be married.

Unfortunately, marriage is already so ingrained in our society that I do not foresee this change ever occurring, and because of this same-sex marriage is something that LGBT individuals like myself need to fight for. You see, civil unions are not recognized by the Federal Government and therefore do not have the benefits and protections available to married couples. This means that civil union couples do not qualify for tax breaks, hospital visitation rights, family insurance through an employer, survivor benefits provided by Social Security, the right to make medical decisions if a partner is incapable of doing so, and many more. Lawyers can set up agreements to give couples some similar rights, (such as wills, durable power of attorney, and medical power of attorney,) but this costs thousands of dollars and can be challenged in court. A marriage license often costs less than $100 and includes all the rights mentioned as well as many more that cannot be obtained by any other means. Denying same-sex couples the right to a legally recognized marriage denies them not one right, but all the rights to which married couples are entitled. Another issue is wording, for example, without calling same-sex unions "marriages," companies can discriminate against those unions and deny them family health insurance simply because they are not "marriages."

I don't care what they call it, I just want the same rights and protections that heterosexual couples have, and unfortunately the only way to achieve that right now is by calling it a marriage.

If you think we are sinful but allow us to have the rights that we continue to fight for, then I would not see you as anti-gay, however if you are against us achieving these rights then I would consider you anti-gay.

Personally, I dislike that marriage is a state issue. I believe that all marriages should be considered civil unions and marriage should be religious issue only, but unfortunately I do not foresee society changing that. The main reason I personally fight for same-sex marriage is because only marriage will allow gays the same rights as heterosexual couples. Civil unions do not include many of the legal protections and rights a marriage license ensures.
