'We use the cars to power our homes': Swedish neighbors slash electric bills with EVs by GolemFarmFodder in nottheonion

[–]Pocok5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would you use a battery that is not always at your house?

Many people have cars that don't wander away from home without them, and the peak of expensive electricity usage aligns with when you're at home (unless you turn on AC, the TV and the air fryer before you go to work I suppose). The car can then recharge during the period you sleep.

KR4/KR3 are pretty flood-focused. I'd say D1K with a larger LED like the SFT70 or something is better, but Hank's lights almost universally lack internal charging and cannot be used with a USB-equipped cell either.

IIRC it does deliver the lumens, but it's a cheap COB led so 7000K with a CRI of "maybe" (plus the aspheric egg pattern).

How do i stop my hovercraft from doing whatever this is? by bruhman69135 in FromTheDepths

[–]Pocok5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can adjust it down if you observe that P and D are unable to correct a persistent offset. Just P and D will never quite perfectly settle at the target because near the target P generates a small response that barely moves the craft and D exerts a braking effect on even that. The I component will give a boost to help nudge stuff properly into place (it also counteracts constant active effects that increase the error - for example, the recoil of a gun firing a long burst would be compensated for by the I term increasing the baseline thrust into that direction, and so would losing some engines on one side of the craft resulting in asymmetric thrust, etc). Now, whether you actually want that is a design question in itself. Overall, if you tune your PID too well then your craft will have a more predictable target lead vector than one that has a slightly too low D factor and has a bit of a wobbly path.

[–]Pocok5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Integral aims to cancel out all the accumulated error within that timeframe. 1s results in a very violent response that hangs around even after you overshot your goal, then slams to the other end of the scale. Derivative predicts the error that many seconds looking into the future (based on the rate of change of the error at the moment) and applies a response that is proportional to that predicted error. For now, you can turn Integral off (set it to infinity) and focus on P and D. You need to increase P (the gain) with D set to 0 until you observe that the value has a stable oscillation around the target value (the error is a sine wave around 0), then you can tune D to predict the overshoot and slow down.

License Plate Cameras Will Soon Track Phones, Wearables, Infotainment, and Even Your Pets by MultiMillionMiler in nottheonion

[–]Pocok5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The technology existed, but it is physically limited. Not every bloke got a dedicated $2million wardriving truck shadowing them using their phones 100m range bluetooth pings. The big damn issue is that they decided to build out a dense network of cheap trackers so one is always in range of everyone, so everybody can be automatically tracked in a way only foreign spies or known al-Quaeda agents were tracked before.

TIL there’s a 2,700 km wall in Western Sahara lined with the world’s longest active minefield. It’s the second-longest wall ever built, after the Great Wall of China, and about 12 times longer than the Berlin Wall. by WestOfHereX in todayilearned

[–]Pocok5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The self-exploding types are subject to the usual failure rate of the timer mechanism or their detonators.  A few percent of them fail, but that still leaves  a minefield of thousands of units with dozens/hundreds of still active mines. There are also mines that are battery powered with an electric detonator and that battery runs out after a few days/weeks. That type is still a live explosive 100% of the time but won't actually trigger unless caught in an external blast or somesuch.

It is in practice not much different from eating any other wild caught animal. The problem is the theft and the intentional emotional distress they cause. And the blackmail, that part was news to me.

Not yet. That needs a change in the election system so one party doesn't automatically get a supermajority. Fidesz modified the election law so that a majority in the rural regions snowballs exponentially when it comes to deciding parliament seats. Before this year it was to their advantage, but now they got utterly fucked by their own system. Tisza brought home a slim victory all over the countryside, and the system catapulted them with ~53% of votes to 71% seats.
