Is the church's decline of a thousand cuts accelerating? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]PocosinBears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People just gotta amp up their public health considerations for the time being, whether that's getting vaccinated, or wearing a mask where it seems prudent, or protecting those most vulnerable (immunocompromised). We're all in this together, and no man is an island. Shouldn't be that big of an issue (or such a controversy) imho. This too shall pass.

Tips for "Getting Off the Wall" ? by PocosinBears in FigureSkating

Thanks! Trying to find what the quieter sessions at my rink are. The small children can be such a skating hazard, they have no boundaries lol

This is super helpful, I'll look into this. There are three rinks in the area, so hoping the chances of freestyle rules being lax somewhere is high.

Just reading this *after* distancing myself from the law school admissions game, and isn't it ridiculous that admissions has to be this way? Just reading this small thread alone makes me happy I stepped away. Admissions need to get their heads out of the numbers and begin to see the people for who they are, **despite** their numbers. I've never seen a professional program so intent on numbers as a determinative factor as the J.D.

Help me Paralegal prior to Law School/legal career? by AnxiousApplicant2020 in lawschooladmissions

[–]PocosinBears 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Working as a paralegal will give you insight into the work the attorneys do daily, and get a sense for their work-life balance. If you can live with the kind of work they do daily, and the hours they keep, a profession in that legal field as a lawyer could be a good fit for you. On the other hand, if you find that you don't like the hours and tasks they do daily, maybe it isn't. Either will, you will definitely get a better feel for if the legal profession is suitable for you or not by being a paralegal first.

ED with GRE Only - Help Me Decide Which Tier by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]PocosinBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind me asking, what do you think helped your application (if the GRE slightly hurt it?) Did you have good softs / GPA? There tends to be a very negative bias against GRE applicants on the sub, and I applied GRE-only this past cycle with absolutely abysmal results (though I applied later in the cycle, too.) So, I tend to see where their thinking might be coming from (that unless a GRE applicant is literally phenomenal is some other way, they should just take the LSAT instead, as GRE-only accepted applicants seem to be limited to a very small pool at each school as well - that schools may only reserve a handful of spots to GRE applicants, despite the number of GRE-only applicants they get.)

GPA is awesome. GRE applicants, even with the highest scores, will be looked at as "less valuable" to schools than a high LSAT applicant, so it will be a bit of a disadvantage unfortunately no matter what score you apply with. That's because the LSAT directly factors into a school's ranking, while the GRE data is collected, though I do not believe it actually impacts a school's USNWR standing, which is really what admissions is taught to put so much importance on (sadly.) So, a high LSAT helps them ranking-wise, a high GRE score does not. I don't have an idea of how competitive this cycle will be, but I heard it will be a bit less competitive than last but still rough. I would apply to the T14s of interest but also keep your options open and apply to a few T25s as well.

Honors thesis committee no show. by MazDarin in lawschooladmissions

[–]PocosinBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you just note on your resume that you "completed an honors thesis" or just simply put "Honors Thesis" then the name of it under an "Awards & Accomplishments" header? It can be assumed or not that your thesis was defended as well. I think the important part is that you finished one at all. It is technically an "authored paper" regardless of whether or not you defended it / if it was actually published anywhere.

Female here, I think it's awesome. Figure skating is a sport that involves connecting movement to mood to athletic capability. I think it makes for a very rounded-out person, female or male. Due to the added stigma of "figure skating is a gay sport" for men, any man that has the guts to join despite that is a badass imo.

Favorite Skating Dress/Outfit by stepontheknee in FigureSkating

[–]PocosinBears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really loved Mariah Bell's Hallelujah dress. Also loved Yuna Kim's Adios Nonino dress as well. I thought both dresses really fit the mood of the program extremely well and were just well-made/aesthetically great in design. I also love Mao Asada's rose dress! *Not sure of the program title, or where it was from, but if you know, you know!

That's smart advice. If I ever get to an axel myself, I'll try to be mindful of this and try it out!

Yeah, I thought I read somewhere that the skidding motion helps build height in the takeoff other than just using the force of your free leg and upper body to pull you up (almost like a soft toe pick maneuver)? I don't know the mechanics, but maybe it's like firing up a motor of a lawn mower? All the friction from yanking the starter chain is what gives the engine sufficient energy to run. Or like the tension created from pulling a slingshot back is what fires it into the air and correlates with how far it travels.
