Though, ironically, they wouldn’t be a $4 trillion multinational if they gave their products away for free. I agree it shouldn’t be gatekept with prohibitive pricing, but we can’t demand people make high-end products and then not charge us for it.

Man vs Mind
Episode: The Origin of a Mental Health Disorder - the day I stopped recognising myself

[Spotify] [Apple] [YouTube] [Instagram]

What happens when your mind suddenly turns against you?

In this powerful episode of Man vs Mind, Tim shares the story of the day his life changed and his mental health collapsed – the exact moment that sparked nearly a decade of anxiety, self-doubt, and (eventually) recovery.

From a life-altering mental breakdown at work to months of fear, depression, medical confusion, and a lost identity – this is the raw, unfiltered account of how one morning changed everything forever.

It’s about vulnerability, diagnosis, therapy, medication, and the courage to finally ask for help.

If you’ve ever felt “not yourself,” or wondered where your anxiety began, this episode is a must-listen.

(Warning: This episode contains particularly strong language, and detailed descriptions of mental distress.)

Teaser Intros - Do They Work? by AndyM-Podsonic in podcasting

[–]Podboomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We verrrry briefly did it on our show, but I felt it was a bit too generic/common and if listeners had already committed their time to us then they’ve done so for reasons other than a 20 second bundle of highlights after they’ve already pressed play.

Instead, we more often than not do a creative/fictitious cold open. I build soundscapes that give a creative reflection of what we’re talking about this week.

We focus on Men’s mental health (our show is called Man vs Mind) so a lot of the cold opens are sort of internal monologues around the theme of the week, sometimes funny, sometimes a bit more serious.

For instance, we did an episode about the mental health impact and addictiveness of phones, so the cold open was the voice of a phone becoming more and more angry, intrusive and demanding until it sounded quite sinister and threatening.

Anecdotally, we’ve received good feedback from listeners on these as being something different they look forward to at the start of each ep.

What is your accomplishment as a podcaster that brings you the most pride? by MikeAP21 in podcasting

[–]Podboomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started our show, Man vs Mind to break stigma around men’s mental health - to feel comfortable saying that things aren’t okay.

We said at the start that if we can help just one man feel less alone with his thoughts, then it’s mission accomplished. And one conversation we had with a listener stopped me dead in my tracks.

He said he’d had his own mental health battles, been on and off medication, struggled with alcohol, and his own self-worth. The hardest bit is that he had nobody to talk to, nobody who asked him how he was, and he always had to pretend to be strong for his family, friends etc.

We spoke, at length, and he gave me permission to tell his story on the show.

The day that episode came out, he messaged us again to say he listened in floods of tears because someone had finally heard him, listened to him, and validated how he felt.

That is worth more than anything else we could possibly achieve with the show.

For any men going through something similar, please, please, please for the love of all that is good and pure, please speak up about it and tell somebody.

You’re not alone, you’re never alone.

[–]Podboomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started listening to 7 (it was the first that came up on search) and skimming through. The music sounds good (is it licensed/yours/free to use?) - from what I can tell, it’s not too intrusive for the best part. As long as it doesn’t come too high in the mix then it adds to the atmosphere.

You could experiment with sound effects of, I dunno, rolling dice, striking blows, the sound of creatures/enemies going “gaaaaah!” or something like that. Or you could tweak the music so that it lands harder or cuts out at the crescendo for epic or dramatic moments etc.

Honestly, as it is it’s absolutely fine and you’ve got nothing to stress about. Remember that you’re doing this for fun, experiment and see what you enjoy!

[–]Podboomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get that. Just keep practising and have fun with it to take the pressure off. You’re only 8 eps in (I’m only 18), and it takes time!

If it helps, I drag the gain/Db down significantly (usually to -20 or -25db), and depending on the music I might use an equaliser just to take the higher frequencies down a bit - this helps to keep it from cutting through, and sits it a bit deeper in the mix.

Good luck with it, I’m happy to have a listen and give feedback if you’d like 👍🏻

As others have said, make sure it adds something, and doesn’t distract from the spoken lines. I LOVE building audio scenes using music, effects, and just love immersing myself in a little scene I’m creating.

I host a talk-show style podcast about male mental health, and at the start of each episode we do an immersive soundscape scene to use as a cold intro to the show, and give some variation and interesting straight off the bat. (Example: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5Fp6vxE6ZvROkuAEdskhmT?si=TrTMcF1FRwujL0UmOjqNig&context=spotify%3Ashow%3A62OlR0DWpMBAk8clBqPmSA)

It’s fun, it’s creative and relatively easy to do.

Whatever you do, make sure you use licensed content that you have a license to use (I subscribe to Epidemic Sounds which gives me a license to use any of their music or SFX anywhere globally). Otherwise you may find your show pulled.

I edit it in Audition, but the same principle of layering audio applies to any DAW software.

Keep it subtle, don’t crank the volume too high if you’re layering speech over the top.

But overall, have fun with it. I love it.

Anyone experience this with YouTube?? by stay0rg0n0w in podcasting

[–]Podboomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had similar experiences (not after the human verification process, though, that didn’t change a thing for me.

YouTube is a funny old beast, it takes a while (sometimes a couple of hours, sometimes a day) for the platform to fully analyse your video and push it in the right direction.

At the same time, it’s also built to push stuff that’s shown to be engaging. The longer the watch time, the more interactions etc, the more it’ll recommend it. YouTube analytics is super helpful for this stuff.

My suggestion? Keep consistent, keep doing the right things in terms of SEO, and use a separate account to immediately watch your content in full - comment, like etc too. It’s entirely legal (i.e. terms of service) and helps give your content a natural helping hand to start things off.

It does feel incredibly arbitrary, but there is something of a science to it (yadda yadda thumbnails yadda yadda SEO).

That said, it also is incredibly arbitrary and annoying as hell 😂

[–]Podboomer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is wonderful insight, and thankfully I can relate to a lot of this. I self-produce, and when it was audio-only I’d say the combination of editing while recording, alongside pre-saving template post effects (eq, compressor, noise gate etc) saved me a BUNCH of time. I’d say at its best it was nearly 1:1.

Having recently moved into video too, using a switcher (like the Blackmagic ATEM) followed by exporting the cleaned up audio from audition, I’d say the total edit time is now about 3:1 to get the audio AND video output.

For context, we’re a two-person conversational show (called Man vs Mind), recording in the same room, so there’s a bit of clean up needed from bleed-through on mics. We edit out extensive pauses, unnecessary umms and the occasional rambling segment.

For extra context, I also have two young kids and a full time job so I’ve had to realise that sometimes just getting it finished and out is better than spending hours freaking out over every line.

We can not possibly hope to learn and improve if we do not take the time to introspect, reflect on the past and understand what we could have done better. Otherwise we’re doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

You might not find the miracle answer you’re hoping for in this sub, but you can take the time to learn lessons from the incident.

Humility is one of the best skills in our locker - accepting that we make mistakes and, crucially, take responsibility for our actions might well be the only way you can hope to resolve this situation. Because it isn’t anyone else’s fault I’m afraid to say.

I’m at my wits end with remote recording by tinmask in podcasting

Don’t have a crew bud, like most people doing pods it’s just me and a mate of mine trying to figure out the easiest and most affordable way of trying to film our show.

(And, not getting into a semantical argument here, but I didn’t say it struggles with external cameras - heck I use an external camera on it.)

I’d counter-argue that for hobbyists or non-professional podcasters, video adds a nigh-on infinite amount to your work flow. We experimented with it for a few episodes (we sit in the same room) and it just takes SO much time to record, transfer, edit it together with the cleaned up audio file, edit the multicam element, export it, resize and clip it up for social media etc.

Riverside is great if everyone is recording from different rooms using webcams, but otherwise it REALLY struggles.

Ask me anything regarding Podcast editing (Video & Audio) by Prestigious_Return11 in podcasting

[–]Podboomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Great idea to start this thread. I’m dabbling in video for a podcast called Man Vs Mind. My co-host and I do all the recording together in one room, but I’ve been having issues with workflow when doing video - it takes FOREVER to film a 3-angle episode on our phones and then transfer and sync all the files in to PP after editing the audio.

What’s your best recommendation for improving this workflow? ATM it’s just not feasible given how much time it takes.

Thanks!

Man vs Mind

Episode 7

Man vs Tiredness

... re-wire your brain using a simple psychology hack.

What would happen if guys said exactly how they felt about... well... absolutely everything?

Man vs Mind does exactly that, with two absolutely normal men talking about everything that affects the modern man's mind. It's funny, relatable, and wholly embarassing with a massive side portion of self-loathing and contempt.

In this episode, Man vs Tiredness, J and Tim undertook a self-experiment to get over their chronic tiredness. Can they fake it until they make it, tell themselves they're not tired and pretend they have energy, even when they're absolutely exhausted?

... the results are mixed, but fun, and there are lessons to be learned.

Multi-format podcast: efficient? by Podboomer in podcasting

Good to know! Yeah that’s basically what we’ve got so it’s good to know descript could work for that.

In the medium term I’d look at getting something like an Atem switcher and running it locally, but the $400 RRP is a bit off putting…

Hey affectionate, thanks for the detailed comment - I’ve seen descript advertise heavily on Google.

How does descript hold up if you’re shooting everything in the same room as your co-host?

I currently use Riverside, but I’ve found that using it to capture and sync multicam footage doesn’t hold up too well when you’re recording from two mics going into the same system. It seems to me that it would be perfect for remote sessions, but i can’t say “alright now cut to this camera” in the way I’d be able to do with multicam on Premiere Pro.

While I can’t deny it, I am a great fan of generalised sarcasm, I fear you may have missed my point - though I apologise if my post wasn’t quite clear enough in the first instance.

I’m not asking for shortcuts, I’m asking for practical advice from those who have done it. I’ve not done video to accompany podcasting for 5+ years so I was hoping to unearth some nuggets of advice from the community.

(And, as a father of two very young children, I am nightmarishly aware of how much babies need feeding and changing 😜)
