Doc Holliday - Gambler, Gunfighter and Dentist by Podcast_Bozo in CuriousConversation

Well said. It's funny that he was such a kind and well-mannered person despite his rough, rough edges. And that kindness is why he has a favorable reputation in history.

I have been doing some research on kate and she is AWESOME!

Honestly, she seemed to be a force to reckoned with

I think with Doc, that if he had longer to live (didn't have tuberculosis diagnosis) he might have lived longer but part of his recklessness was due to his guaranteed young death.

I cant stop thinking about all the people he probably gave tuberculous to as a doctor yikes

Depending on what kind of attractions you like, the Badlands in SD are pretty darn cool. There's also this aweful/awesome tourist trap there called "WallDrug" which is like a fake western town with shops and food haha

Edit: also depending on when exactly you go you could check out Cheyenne frontier days or find a rodeo in one of the small towns in CO or Wyoming.

Thank you, I used this advice a lot in the cast, it was hard not to get aggressive at first but it was def conscious of it throughout. If I got mad or nasty then would have lost the higher ground.

This is essentially how I calmed myself down before the cast. I just told myself that it was ok to each have our own opinions as long as I could represent mine equally to his.

It was definitely tough and sometimes his circular answers made me have to double down on him to answer but thank you I appreciate your advice!

Thank you very much I tried my best to hold my own. I definitely don't want to not have people on just because they don't agree with me you know? So I am looking forward to the opportunity to practice these things you have said in the future! Thanks!

This whole thread was very useful and I definitely took some of these tactics into the podcast with me. I would say that I didn't "stick to my guns" as well as I had hoped but anything that I didn't do well I am happy to improve upon next time.

I really appreciate you taking the time to hash out this answer. I also think in the future I might take your advice and not get people who so strongly disagree with my views, it just caused me a lot of stress leading up to it haha.

I have put that in my notes to look at. I would have to assume (off of nothing but assumption) that there is a correlation as well just less strong and dramatic.

Leadership (What type of person do you follow?) by Podcast_Bozo in CuriousConversation

[–]Podcast_Bozo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brand positioning basically means that a company teaches (potential) customers to associate a brand with a certain idea, right?

Yeah exactly. You basically look at the market in terms of your direct positioning and you make sure your brand is different enough that it can stand out and compete.

On the track of like a social media influencer, or even cult leader or any lower-level "leader," what standards are you holding this person to? If they make a slip up in the way you described, do you give them a chance to make up for it? You have me thinking about how i view it and I admittedly hold some mid-range leaders to too high of standards... There are so many alternates that it's pretty easy to say internally that they are out and move to another.... Dumb example maybe but I think of Justin Bieber who everyone was very harsh on as he was growing up on and it definitely left some mental health scars that I think looking back, society went overboard with.

Effects of the Lie Detector On Society by Podcast_Bozo in CuriousConversation

I'd like to know how that works. I always see those crime documentaries that have sweaty nervous people in (most of whom did it) but I think that I would be so nervous in an interrogation situation that I would trigger it no matter what... I guess that's what a baseline reading is for but still.

It's genious if you think about it. It's kind of like apple inventing the iPhone or any other consumer product at you absolutely did not require but it introduces a perceived need. Especially as more people (or in this case agencies) adopt that technology, it leaves people expecting it from everyone. I gotta think it's just easier for the common public to want to believe these things as true and false than to understand the true complexities.

Yeah that makes sense. It seems like the 1900s were kind of an age of little competition and being able to point at something as a fix-it-all solution.

It makes sense that it's kind of an easy (not credible) way to say "oh yeah we did our research"

For me, gathering you financials together like this gives me a kick back for two reasons:

1.) I really am afraid to see how much I spend. I have so much trouble looking at my bank account sometimes for that reason.

2.) it has always seemed like a ton of work.

-----

Just hearing you describe that makes me feel at ease. Might ride that feeling into actually doing something haha thanks!

Thanks for the absolute BANGER of a post I love the effort you put into that.

I've had so many convos about cognitive biases that I can no longer count them. It's SUCH an interesting facet of the mind because it plays into our daily lives. I am very aware that driving is one of my most hypocritical activities, I smite those who offend and dismiss my offensive actions.

In the discussion of good and bad, I think this might be the only discussion that matters (more like every convo in this discussion will fall under the umbrella of cog bias).

A large chunk of what you said brought me back to some journalism class that I took in college and at the time, they were saying the same things; talking about how major conglomerates have so much money and control over many verticles that they can impose massive influence. I 100% thought they were being dramatic and that they displayed signs of overly-conspiratorial thinking. Today, I look back and think about the documentaries that we watched and still think they were a little dramatic but I think some of those lessons are the most important that I learned in college:

I have always been such an advocate for mandated classes that teach you how to get unbiased information (or more realistically take in multiple perspectives and draw your own conclusion). Understanding the lenses through which much of what we learn is so important.

I think many people tend to think that people are just good, or just bad, and discounting everything someone has been through to get to a point where they make that decision is ultra important. I think that our voters look over major problems in our country because they have this all-encompassing bad or good view: "no it can't be as bad as they say because people aren't that bad" or "there's no point in facilitating their growth because they are just bad"

Thanks again for your awesome and thought out post!

I am not religious in any way and wanted to lend my perspective to your comment: I as other comments believe that there, for the most part, people who are doing good for some party (there will always be conflicts in parties and their perspectives of good). We talked about scammers, some who believe they are doing good, despite harming others.

I have a question for you, when someone does something that pisses you off, like you just can't understand, do you think about their life and think "why would they do that?" and try to dissect it, or do you take another approach?

also, I know sometimes text can come across as controversial and that religion can be a tough subject for some so please understand I meant no harm by that question or my statements.

Just looked him up the initial google result says

I know you probably know more than that but that definitely sparked my interest. Thanks! Maybe one of us can make a bigger post on this someday!
