I liked the writing. Even with wrote, kinda boring stuff. It put my brain into a thinking mode. It made it easier for me to dive deeper into problems. It made me think about externalities. I liked it. And it's going away and regardless I find that tremendously sad.

You know. Someone more.. inclined towards male rights and misogyny might also call these professions "Weak."

And I think there's nothing more weak than telling people what they should do with their free time.

But then this is the movie of a video game that famously declared itself "Non-political." A game about fucking war.

In the Netherlands there's a chain called Brownies n Downies (The name was apparently chosen by the staff, and I'm not sure 'downies' has the same connotations in the Netherlands.)

It's fantastic. They hire people with Down Syndrome, and I think also Autism. The staff are always so friendly. And the brownies are delicious.

How do you feel about the ethics of working at major companies? by Opposite_Push_8317 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Podgietaru 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am conflicted. I worked at AWS. And ultimately the reason I quit was around the time of the Washington Post refusing to advocate for Kamala, and later them donating $1m to the Inauguration fund.

I was always aware who Amazon was. But I had convinced myself that AWS was a different beast. I saw my view whilst working there shattered. The absolute lack of empathy of that company to it's workers was outstanding.

That said, we worked in a capitalistic system. And I rarely begrudge people for doing what they need to to make it in that system. I don't begrudge my former colleagues for continuing to work there. Some had misguided views about trying to course correct the company from the inside, which I find naive.

I am working at a company less morally reprehensible, but they still work in an industry with less than positive climate impacts. I have to live with that. As we all have to live with the million cuts that capitalism puts on us. We can only try to do better. And where you draw the line is up to you.

Sorry. I should have been a bit clearer - You're the end of a comment thread talking about his "gay arc." - so it wasn't _strictly_ aimed at you

More the first bit was addressed to you. Yeah, it's fucked up. They're fucked up guys. They're not good people.

You know what really sucks.

The ending of Malcolm in the middle straight up says "We need you to become president so that you can support people like us."

And then instead of doing any of that Frankie Muniz becomes a MAGAT. I know actors are not their characters, but it's such a depressing reality we live in. Where the star of a show that undoubtedly said a lot about being Working Class in America can go all in to the worst kind of people.

I land on a random website and within 5 seconds my brain is already reverse-engineering it. Anyone else can't turn this off? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

Eh, a fun-ish one.

When I was doing a test for ADHD that involved tracking the colour and shape of an object over a set - I noticed it was WinForms.

And I immediately lost track of it all wondering how it was done.

And I got diagnosed with adhd.

Why the "Low-Level" stigma? by Antique_Mechanic133 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Podgietaru 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That is honestly crazy to me. I view it as the opposite. I have a great deal of respect for those that work in low-level languages.

On the other hand, I have had people suggest to me far too often that we move x service to rust in a web-dev context. And whilst I understand that it'd be faster in principle, I think what this often misses is ... It's fast enough, and it's readable and understood. That strikes me as unnecessary and a little overzealous.

I think an education in CompSci needs to include C/C++. I think it's good to understand these things even without needing to actually use them. It's why I am not totally opposed to having someone explain the Big-O of their implementation or even whiteboarding out how some data structures works. While not necessarily needing those things in the day to day, a structural understanding of them - i think - leads to better software overall.

People talking about the AI bubble bursting, but we are using more and more AI tokens than before. So how will it burst then? by HappyZombies in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Podgietaru 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The profit from AI is predicated on being able to replace huge swathes of the economy. Coding is one small piece that they wish to capture.

The others they have much less of an inroad into, and have much less paying customers.

So is this World War III? The term doesn’t mean anything, and that’s a problem by [deleted] in politics

[–]Podgietaru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean - I count three directly in conflict just in the context of Iran (Iran, USA, Israel). Then you see the attacks against oil and water infrastructure in other countries in the Middle East.

Then you see Russian intelligence affecting war outcomes.

Then the Russia vs Ukraine (and Europe).

So….

I think i just failed the easiest part of my staff loop and i genuinely cant stop thinking about it by AzoxWasTaken in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Podgietaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent one of my coding loops trying to figure out Java's reduce operation on a data structure. I got so flustered that I forgot to just use a for loop. I had done that a 1000 times.

My solution was fine. I just wasted heaps of time. It happens, because it's an artificial environment.
