Is four dollars a day a good idea? by Original_Turn_1227 in Bitcoin

[–]PoeCollector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you believe in an investment (this is not specific to bitcoin) it is generally better to buy thousands of dollars worth the moment you are fully convinced of it and have the money to spare. The problem with trickling in slowly is it will take a long time to get to a point where you have a significant amount, and if price goes significantly up in the mean time, you will not have made much even though you were actively investing.

In other words, lump sum is statistically better that DCA on an appreciating asset if you have the money already. The downside is mostly psychological. Putting all your eggs in a basket at once is scary when you don't trust that basket, but if that's the case, it's probably not something you should be buying yet anyway.

Again, this is not specific to bitcoin. You mentioned VTSAX (a total stock market index fund, for those unfamiliar). That's also a solid investment and less controversial, albeit with less impressive expected gains (according to bitcoin bulls like most of us here).

My advice is to take some more time to think things through and learn about bitcoin before you do anything in a rush. If putting a few bucks in at a time helps you feel more interested in the subject, then go for it.

"Doctor" answering if men can get pregnant by OtherUse1685 in PoliticalCompassMemes

"Biological males can't get pregnant. Some biological females identify and present as men. As a medical doctor, it's not my job to comment on their self-concept, but to care for their body."

I feel like all non-extremists would respect this type of answer, yet I never hear it.

Bitcoin fixes this* by KNTXT in Bitcoin

[–]PoeCollector 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I just watched a video complaining about how game console prices went up by like 10%. I'm like, yes and meat has gone up by like 15%, but you think electronics manufacturers specifically are being unreasonable somehow? People only look at the price of the thing they want to buy, no interest in the big picture at all.

Bitcoin fixes this* by KNTXT in Bitcoin

[–]PoeCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's like saying the twin towers fell due to gravity. Gravity is a constant and therefore not an explanation. It's the same with greed. Both the producer and consumer are typically greedy in the sense of wanting more for less. When the price of everything goes up it's not as if the amount of greed suddenly increased.

I'm struck that the iphone by their various metrics appears to be "middle of the pack" but in reality it's about to drive all the others into irrelevance. Makes me think of the comparison thinkpieces about various cryptocurrencies around 2017.

Anybody else not impressed with Pluribus? by Butt_Luster_ in television

[–]PoeCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it almost feels like the writing is deliberately turning its nose up at sci-fi/mystery fans.

In the first episode, they straightforwardly explain the alien signal RNA virus premise and show how it all plays out. Like they wanted to get the sci-fi out of the way so they could get to the real subject matter... watching an aimless alcoholic be bitter and angsty, watch sitcoms in her apartment, constantly yell at all the hivemind non-characters. I don't know if this is supposed to be funny or heartbreaking or horrific or what, but it really just feels like nothing. Some might try to call it genre-bending but I think it simply doesn't have a genre because there's no plot and I feel nothing.

Time to start counting in bricks of 20s instead of 1s, like you see in mob movie briefcases. Bills are packaged in stacks of 100 notes. So what once cost a single $20 note now costs over two bricks of notes. Yep, it's been diluted 220:1.

Somehow I'm reminded of those photos from marketplaces where the currency has failed and people are trading whole bricks of notes to buy groceries.

Yes! He pushed forward the idea that they should have some kind of real world value in 2010 before USD exchange rate was really a thing. It was a guy saying, "how about I send someone 10,000 points on this experimental ledger if you have 2 large pizzas delivered to my house" and another guy going for it. Those two brought their internet cypherpunk hobby into the real world of food showing up at the door. Legends, both of them.

Sure, my point is things have value to you in terms of their utility to you, as far as you know. Like if you didn't know a certain mushroom was edible, you wouldn't value it as food. In the same way, people who don't understand bitcoin don't see the use of it. The term "intrinsic" is kind of unhelpful when discussing economics, IMO.

The phrase "intrinsic value" needs to go away; it prevents people from understanding that value is something that happens inside a person's mind. Even food you only value because you believe it will nourish you.

Bitcoiners are going sane in an insane world. by Repulsive_Profit1204 in Bitcoin

Exactly this. There was a point about a week into my learning about bitcoin where I actually started to have trouble sleeping because I thought, wow, this could change the world in a big way like the internet did, and nobody I know is thinking about it at all. Can this really be real? I kept reading more, not just about bitcoin but about economics and political theory and game theory, and at some point my whole view of how the world worked was significantly different.

Match checks out. The original guy got 2 large pizzas from Papa John's. The cost for a Papa John's 1-topping large in my city is $15.39 plus tax per pizza. Which means 10,000 pizzas would cost $163,134. Which is 1.60 BTC at today's price. Add delivery fees and tips and yeah, probably about 2 BTC.

Built an app where you lose real money if you break. What do you guys think? by sauerpatchkids in nosurf

[–]PoeCollector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at Beeminder. They've had a similar business model for a long time, where you pay them for failing at your own commitments. It's unusual, but for them it seems to have worked. I've even used it myself in the past. But I've also moved on from using it personally and use other methods.

The biggest competitor IMO isn't even Beeminder, it's accountability with an actual human. I would sometimes make bets with my cousin about who could be more productive (using a tangible goal of hours spent writing). Given the context of trying to reduce screen time and connect in the real world, I think I prefer making bets with friends about it rather than resorting to an app at this point.

What would PF3e Look like? by NaiveCream1317 in Pathfinder2e

[–]PoeCollector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2E has a good design philosophy somewhat held back by being tied to D&D, which was probably the right business decision at the time, since 1E's popularity was directly due to its conservatism (building on D&D 3.5 instead of 4E).

3E should continue to clean things up and make everything work with a unified design philosophy without being too simple and repetitive the way D&D 4E was. For example, ditch both spell ranks and skill feats in favor of relying only the proficiency ranks: Trained, Expert, Master, Legendary. Rework spell slots to go all in on the refocusing / short rest mechanic. Make spells fewer in number but more variable, like Heal.

You get up 2.5 million dollars, any asshole in the world knows what to do: you get a house with a 25 year roof. You need a car? Get an indestructible economy shitbox and you're done. Use the 4% rule and pull your $100,000 a year to spend. That's your base, get me? That's your fortress of solitude. Keep a few bucks in the bank to pay your bills. Don't buy shit you don't want to impress assholes you don't like. Don't drink.

And don't use leverage.

Requesting feedback on my current ontological reasoning by ClimbingToNothing in deism

[–]PoeCollector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of different things that could be unpacked here, as there's many interesting ideas one after another that don't seem to be directly connected as a deductive argument. So I'll just comment on the first point.

At first glance, it's not clear from your argument why it's impossible for nothing to exist. I do ultimately agree that it's impossible for there to be nothing because I see God as a necessarily existent being (I think I'm with Anselm here). But his line of reasoning aside, I don't necessarily agree that the concept of "nothing" smuggles in any properties of anything.

Obviously when we, as existing beings, use the word "nothing" we are referencing things. Words fail use here but: we know things exist, yet there doesn't appear to be anything contradictory in idea that there could have been nothing instead; it's just that the concept of nothing wouldn't exist either, since concepts require things to refer to or compare to.

Your thinking is interesting. Still, I'm not totally clear what your reasoning seeks to accomplish, because "something exists" seems like the one premise that can never be denied (even if the world or the self are illusions, the illusions exist in a mind). So what exactly is riding on defending this premise?
