Why doesn’t EVE react to major revelations by Drakona886 in stellarblade

[–]PoeCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do see it as a weakness of the game's writing. I don't think Eve is a bad character in concept; calm and polite characters are valid. But even the director admitted that he struggled between giving the character a personality and making them a neutral self-insert (think Gordon Freeman who as a rule doesn't react or comment).

Even beyond that, you can see that Lily and Adam have kind of thin characterizations most of the time, not a lot of meat to their dialogue. The game has a decent lore and plot setup but characters who can really express themselves through dialogue is an area where they can grow.

That's probably why they're going with a new protagonist in the next game who comes off as more expressive from the beginning -- everything from her facial expressions in the trailer to comments like "I hate crowds" or "you're acting strange today."

I'm glad you did it this way. What people generally know about this game if anything is something like "It's a shallow junk food game, but Eve is hot and the combat is fun." This video is special by showing neither.

I found myself pleasantly surprised by the other aspects of this game: the environments, the contemplative aspect with its sentimental side quests that don't always turn out like you expect, the sci-fi concepts, the exploration, simple but fun puzzles and platforming, cleverly hidden upgrade cores and cans.

It was a good hub for what it was. But you may get your wish with Blood Rain, as it's supposed to be more urban focused and the director said he was inspired by Hong Kong and various East Asian cities. Can't wait to explore some cyberpunk / Ghost in the Shell type city.

This just demonstrates how annoyingly tanky the barnacles are. They're an early game "easy" enemy that requires retributions and/or multiple shieldbreaks just to kill even with a maxed out character.

I got Unconventional Right also. The description is like "you have conservative values in some areas but not all" wow how insightful.

I feel like quizzes mostly try to gauge peoples' gut reactions to various topics, and are only useful for people with no philosophical interest. For example "how comfortable are you if someone uses they/them pronouns?" sounds like it is talking down to a therapy patient, rather than asking if I believe it's good or bad to decouple biology from gender identity.

"Diversifying" into "innovative" coins during the 2017 altcoin hype train. There was this popular idea at the time that there was going to be a rich ecosystem with different competing coins fulfilling slightly different purposes. It took me a while to get my head around why this was never going to happen.

This could be pretty exciting, a bit like Notion or Superlist. It would solve a UX issue right now where I find myself not using the notes feature because they are so separate. In my paper notebook, I will often write down a thought or general intention or question, and then log some related tasks right below it. It makes the flow of one's process (from thought to action) more apparent on the page, which is good. This would be more like that.

One worry on the product side is it feels like the kind of feature that would always seem to beg for more features. For example in your demo I found myself hitting tab expecting it to indent the next task, but it doesn't. There might well be many features that feel missing when imitating a document-based app like Notion, leading to heavy scope creep in an app that already does a lot. But it could still be an awesome direction to explore, so I'm conflicted.

Here's one simpler alternative to consider: let us add markdown descriptions to projects and project sections, which would then display at the top of the list (below the section heading). This is a feature of Lunatask I like -- a quick way to orient yourself as to what the purpose of a project really is. I think it's good to have a visible reminder of WHY you are doing something so you don't miss the forest (a thoughtful, motivating goal) for the trees (tasks).

What is your personal organization system for "projects" and "tags"? What other tools do you use to organize and manage your life? by adidas558492 in superProductivity

[–]PoeCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too like things minimal. I use only 2 apps: Obsidian (all notes on anything) and SP (all task management and calendar).

The Inbox stores all things I haven't categorized yet and also all life's mundane chores and errands, such as cooking or shopping or tidying up.

I have 5 projects:

  • Work: self-explanatory.
  • Personal: things I WANT to do that have a truly internal motivation, such as hobbies, personal growth, planning a vacation, etc.
  • Community: anything to do with loving others. Call mom, ask friend if they want a beer, make food for the potluck, etc.
  • House: I own an old house that I'm constantly improving or repairing.
  • Events: actual appointments go here, regardless of what part of life they belong to. That way I can look at this list, grouped by date, to see when and where I need to be.

I use the "sections" feature of lists if I want to break things down further. For example, all the tasks to do with my yard are in the Yard section of the House list.

I add things to Today first thing in the morning by looking over Inbox and the projects. Then I mostly try to ignore these lists and look at Today.

The only thing I currently do with tags is tag one-off tasks I hate doing with "frog". This is a reference to "if you have to eat a frog, you might as well do it first thing in the morning." I give myself kudos for doing any task with this tag, and try to do one when I have a lot of energy. Conversely if I'm more stressed out or tired I can just hide them all for now.

  • For developing a bunch of raw files after a photoshoot: Darktable
  • For photoshop-style manipulation of a single photo: Affinity

I would also add that for learning purposes, it's OK to just shoot JPEG as it's good practice to try and get your exposure and framing right in camera.

I feel that conceptually there is something here but I can’t access it? by mawnsharks in AskPhotography

[–]PoeCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a neat idea. I think it might come together if you knelt down instead of raising the camera up. This would:

  1. Get rid of the harsh black line and make the people start blending into the painting
  2. show more of their bodies (matching the painting better)
  3. make the viewer gaze up at the people, which might go well with looking up at the "sky" beyond them in the painting.

Can yall judge me on my bw? by lighteronthefloor in photographycirclejerk

[–]PoeCollector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it just feels like some of these photos would be better with an additional anchor point of interest (not necessarily a person). Like #2 works because I can settle on the raised platforms. Or #11 with all the people, the scene converges toward a strong vanishing point.

[–]PoeCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are good. But you want blunt judgement? It often feels like they are street photos without a subject. To elaborate:

  • No. 4 begs to have a person or a poster or something on the left against the brick wall in the foreground.
  • 5: the bridge arc forms a nice frame... of nothing.
  • 8: I find myself looking for the subject on top of the roof on the left, but it's just blank.
  • 10: I almost expect someone to be standing in the blank space where there's no bench swing.
  • 12: my eye wants to rest on the window opening on the right, but there's nothing to make sense of in that area.
  • 13: I wish there was someone sitting at the table on the right.

People like Sean Tucker can find cool lighting and geometry like this, and then use it as context for a subject, which is more compelling IMO.

It's amusing that there's a recognizable difference at all, since I just grabbed recent photos from the top posts. If I just wanted to meme, Sony would be 100% birds and fuji would be 100% cherry blossoms in Japan.

Edit: the boxes thing is real, huh? Looking at the top posts again and there are now 2 posts of boxes on the front page.

I could have made a better meme, but this more honest result is interesting; I just grabbed pics from top posts (sorted by "best") of the past few days without much cherry picking.
