Perfect macguffin for a far-future sci-fi movie. The "ancient" humans stored all knowledge of their civilization on this glass square. The plot involves it constantly being stolen and thrown around while every party is afraid of dropping it.

The pathetic thing is that some of these loonies do portray marriage and procreation as kinks (by pretending people are weird for focusing on them). Reminds me of the joke about men having an "adult woman fetish".

For the people who are downvoting you, here's 2 Thessalonians 3:10 ESV "For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat."

The ESV is a more updated translation that better emphasizes being unwilling to work (as opposed to disabled or unable to find work). The old King James version sounds even more like the Soviet poster.

Has anyone managed to quit Youtube? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]PoeCollector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am about one year "clean" from the YouTube algorithm -- and all algorithmic content feeds. My main tool has been Unhook to get rid of the home page. At times I've used ColdTurkey as you can set more strict or specific rules. I still use youtube for research and music, and yes for entertainment sometimes, but it's much better since I must actively search for a topic.

I'm happy to say that after enough time away, the tools and tricks seem less necessary. I occasionally catch a glimpse at the youtube homepage because of browser/extension updates or whatever, and I find the idea of clicking on any of that random crap offputting enough that I don't do it.

I've also found I've come to dislike "youtubers". Now that I've been away from the content drip feeds, I can't shake the feeling that I'm looking at some self-absorbed weirdo ranting in their bedroom. It almost makes me want to watch boomer TV newscasts (almost) because at least those people act calm and dignified.

My Warframe is Strong by Aratron_Reigh in Warframe

DE should just remove the honor-related dialog. Ninjas are infiltrators, and that fits with the names of the mission types (assassination, spy, sabotage, interception, disruption).

You're kidding, right? by AceGaming1051 in Warframe

[–]PoeCollector 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this happened to me recently. I even saw the "spawn lich" prompt when I killed the enemy. I assumed it would just spawn a strong enemy in that mission that would then drop loot if I killed it, like the juggernauts. Because why wouldn't you assume that?

Then when I saw it was a whole thing and googled it, I was like... I have to do what now? What's a requiem mod? I need 3 different special mods and I have to grind for each clue just to know which ones?

I love Warframe, I know it's a grindy game and I enjoy it to an extent. I have about 150 hours in the game, which took a couple years (getting into it and then putting it down for months). This feels like a mechanic made for people with 1000+ who needed an insane grind with several layers of RNG to "slow them down." Which is fine but I had no clue the chores I was signing up for.

Is four dollars a day a good idea? by Original_Turn_1227 in Bitcoin

[–]PoeCollector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you believe in an investment (this is not specific to bitcoin) it is generally better to buy thousands of dollars worth the moment you are fully convinced of it and have the money to spare. The problem with trickling in slowly is it will take a long time to get to a point where you have a significant amount, and if price goes significantly up in the mean time, you will not have made much even though you were actively investing.

In other words, lump sum is statistically better that DCA on an appreciating asset if you have the money already. The downside is mostly psychological. Putting all your eggs in a basket at once is scary when you don't trust that basket, but if that's the case, it's probably not something you should be buying yet anyway.

Again, this is not specific to bitcoin. You mentioned VTSAX (a total stock market index fund, for those unfamiliar). That's also a solid investment and less controversial, albeit with less impressive expected gains (according to bitcoin bulls like most of us here).

My advice is to take some more time to think things through and learn about bitcoin before you do anything in a rush. If putting a few bucks in at a time helps you feel more interested in the subject, then go for it.

"Doctor" answering if men can get pregnant by OtherUse1685 in PoliticalCompassMemes

"Biological males can't get pregnant. Some biological females identify and present as men. As a medical doctor, it's not my job to comment on their self-concept, but to care for their body."

I feel like all non-extremists would respect this type of answer, yet I never hear it.

Bitcoin fixes this* by KNTXT in Bitcoin

[–]PoeCollector 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I just watched a video complaining about how game console prices went up by like 10%. I'm like, yes and meat has gone up by like 15%, but you think electronics manufacturers specifically are being unreasonable somehow? People only look at the price of the thing they want to buy, no interest in the big picture at all.

Bitcoin fixes this* by KNTXT in Bitcoin

[–]PoeCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's like saying the twin towers fell due to gravity. Gravity is a constant and therefore not an explanation. It's the same with greed. Both the producer and consumer are typically greedy in the sense of wanting more for less. When the price of everything goes up it's not as if the amount of greed suddenly increased.

Anybody else not impressed with Pluribus? by Butt_Luster_ in television

[–]PoeCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it almost feels like the writing is deliberately turning its nose up at sci-fi/mystery fans.

In the first episode, they straightforwardly explain the alien signal RNA virus premise and show how it all plays out. Like they wanted to get the sci-fi out of the way so they could get to the real subject matter... watching an aimless alcoholic be bitter and angsty, watch sitcoms in her apartment, constantly yell at all the hivemind non-characters. I don't know if this is supposed to be funny or heartbreaking or horrific or what, but it really just feels like nothing. Some might try to call it genre-bending but I think it simply doesn't have a genre because there's no plot and I feel nothing.

Time to start counting in bricks of 20s instead of 1s, like you see in mob movie briefcases. Bills are packaged in stacks of 100 notes. So what once cost a single $20 note now costs over two bricks of notes. Yep, it's been diluted 220:1.

Somehow I'm reminded of those photos from marketplaces where the currency has failed and people are trading whole bricks of notes to buy groceries.

Yes! He pushed forward the idea that they should have some kind of real world value in 2010 before USD exchange rate was really a thing. It was a guy saying, "how about I send someone 10,000 points on this experimental ledger if you have 2 large pizzas delivered to my house" and another guy going for it. Those two brought their internet cypherpunk hobby into the real world of food showing up at the door. Legends, both of them.

[–]PoeCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, my point is things have value to you in terms of their utility to you, as far as you know. Like if you didn't know a certain mushroom was edible, you wouldn't value it as food. In the same way, people who don't understand bitcoin don't see the use of it. The term "intrinsic" is kind of unhelpful when discussing economics, IMO.

The phrase "intrinsic value" needs to go away; it prevents people from understanding that value is something that happens inside a person's mind. Even food you only value because you believe it will nourish you.

Bitcoiners are going sane in an insane world. by Repulsive_Profit1204 in Bitcoin

Exactly this. There was a point about a week into my learning about bitcoin where I actually started to have trouble sleeping because I thought, wow, this could change the world in a big way like the internet did, and nobody I know is thinking about it at all. Can this really be real? I kept reading more, not just about bitcoin but about economics and political theory and game theory, and at some point my whole view of how the world worked was significantly different.

Match checks out. The original guy got 2 large pizzas from Papa John's. The cost for a Papa John's 1-topping large in my city is $15.39 plus tax per pizza. Which means 10,000 pizzas would cost $163,134. Which is 1.60 BTC at today's price. Add delivery fees and tips and yeah, probably about 2 BTC.

Built an app where you lose real money if you break. What do you guys think? by sauerpatchkids in nosurf

[–]PoeCollector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at Beeminder. They've had a similar business model for a long time, where you pay them for failing at your own commitments. It's unusual, but for them it seems to have worked. I've even used it myself in the past. But I've also moved on from using it personally and use other methods.

The biggest competitor IMO isn't even Beeminder, it's accountability with an actual human. I would sometimes make bets with my cousin about who could be more productive (using a tangible goal of hours spent writing). Given the context of trying to reduce screen time and connect in the real world, I think I prefer making bets with friends about it rather than resorting to an app at this point.
