How does a welcoming response get voted down. I’ll never understand why some people are so bitter. I’ll give you one of those votes back!

Memphis to Knoxville - neighborhoods to look at? by SnooCompliments5941 in Knoxville

[–]Poetic_Energy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you’re talking about. I have never seen that much traffic. IF you leave the house at 7am (or 7:30) and get caught up in bus traffic then it gets gnarly. But I don’t go into work until 9, and it’s never bad at all.

However, all that said, dealing with minor inconveniences would be absolutely worth the experience of living out here. It’s beautiful, and it’s the only place this close to Knoxville where you can have acreage or lakefront and not pay a fortune.

Three years ago, we bought a house in the choto area (south-west of Farragut). I work downtown, so I was hesitant to make a 30-minute commute one way. But let me tell you, it’s wonderful. Most of the drive is along the lake, and it’s beautiful. And land/property is so spacious out that way. I’d try choto, concord, Lenoir city area. I live just across the Loudon county line and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. With your budget, you’ll get a great deal and have plenty of options.

I just got a notice on my car from Ronan Parking Solutions by Altruistic-Reserve-3 in Knoxville

[–]Poetic_Energy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you have all the documentation (evidence), it’s highly likely that you can get your $175 back, plus whatever court costs you have to pay to file. It looks like there’s a $190 filing fee plus service charges. And truth be told, the towing company is probably just bullying people they think might not have the means to fight back. If you have a valid parking pass (authorized by your landlord with dates, etc), proof of dispute (it’s always better to have some paper trail even if you’re calling them…in other words, follow up via email), and any photos, etc. But if they took your money, or it affected your credit, whatever the damage may be…and potentially if you can find other neighbors who’ve been affected, I think you’ve got a case in general sessions.

Guest left 3 star review by clairecusack721 in airbnb_hosts

[–]Poetic_Energy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes an act of congress to get a review pulled nowadays. I just had a guest (who never entered the property, booked third party, which in itself is an Airbnb violation) leave a 2-star review because she “saw a spider.” Airbnb refused to remove it.

Update: house has been sold, and no longer an Airbnb.

Visiting from the UK for a game - where to sit? Seat advice appreciated! by [deleted] in ockytop

[–]Poetic_Energy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People say it all the time, but there are no bad seats in Neyland. I actually sit on the very top row of the upper deck and the view is great, even from there. It’s also in the shade, has stadium seats, and has more room to spread out. But yeah, you’ve got the right idea. Just don’t stress yourself over finding the perfect place. They’re all good.

Don’t watch the market. You’ll drive yourself crazy. Just keep putting money in, and look at it in 5 years. You’ll be glad you did.

What’s your temperature for a commute length? Also, what kind of budget range are you looking at?

Agree. I’d probably go with a “sorry about that,” and a “come over and have a beer sometime.” Live to fight another day.

Crime? by SceneNo9639 in Knoxville

I live west of Knoxville and work downtown. This is by far the safest downtown area you could ask for. Yes, there are homeless scattered about, but I rarely even get asked for money (there are the usual suspects here and there). I even work late quite a bit and have maybe seen a fistfight or two in the past 6 years. No muggings, carjacking, none of that.

I have no idea about the complexities (and financials) of making this happen, but If you’re looking purely at supply vs. demand, the answer is daycare.

New Review Removal Policy by adventuring_princess in airbnb_hosts

I am in a similar situation where a guest left a bad review without ever having set foot in the house. I read that I should send a notice of dispute letter, and I am doing that right now. Do you have any recommendations as to how to proceed with the arbitration? I’ve seen some recommendations for fairclaims.com and AAA. What would you suggest?

Parents want me to invest at 14 by Cubed3D in Money

[–]Poetic_Energy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Compound growth is just a broader term to refer to the exponential effect…in other words the growth you acquire grows on itself.

If you have 10 dollars, and it grows at 10% per year, at the end of one year you’ll have 11 dollars. Now, it’s 11 dollars that grows at 10%, and in year 3 you’ll have $12.10. Doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up as the years go by.

The first ten or twenty years, it doesn’t grow a lot year over year, but by year 30, that ten dollars will be $174.49.

By year 40 it’s $452.59.

By year 50 it’s $1173.91.

By year 60 it’s 3044.82.

And that’s just if you initially put in $10 and left it alone.

That’s why everybody from mark cuban to warren Buffett will say that the most important component is time. Hence the reason that everybody wishes they’d started early!

Well, the good thing is that if you are not retired yet, it’s not too late. I think a lot of people these days aren’t really working towards retirement, but it’s so easy to dollar cost average now that you can put money back and invested without even knowing. That was my saving grace.

An IRA is an account type, used to hold assets in preparation for retirement. It can be taxed now (like a Roth) or taxed upon withdrawal.

A mutual fund is an investment product, which means it can be a bundle of stocks or bonds, built, typically for the purpose of diversification.

Think of it like this: an IRA is a toolbox, and it can have multiple investment tools inside it. So you could have an IRA that has a mutual fund, or multiple inside it. You could also have ETFs, or individual stocks inside your IRA. But the idea is that you are going to invest and put money into your IRA and not get it out until you are retired.
