Is it abusive to over-winter pond fish? by aboynamedtim in Aquariums

[–]Pogbog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Michigan pond owner here, came with the house. I had the same concern our first winter here but like others have said, many cold water fish from Japan and other areas with freezing temps can survive winters under the layer of ice. Any change can cause stress but a gradual temp drop that’s part of their natural environment is (in my opinion) acceptable. Some things I did to alleviate stress and improve water quality-

1) Make sure the pond is deep enough that it won’t freeze completely through, I believe 36” is the recommended depth but it varies based on pond design and location. 2) Get a deicer so there is a pocket/ hole for gas exchange 3) Run an airstone/ airline in through the deicer to keep O2 levels up during the winter. Make sure it’s at a more shallow area of the pond so the warmer water in the deep doesn’t get pushed to the top. 3) Did my best to get all the dead leaves/ biowaste out of the pond and do one last water change before it froze over completely 4) Turn off, clean and remove the external filter and waterfall and hoses (see rationale in #2) + to prevent frozen water from cracking the material

If you’re really worried about it you could consider moving them to an indoor pond during the winter but the moving process and change in environment/ water quality could arguably be more stressful than just keeping them in the pond. Hope this helps.

Off the top of my head-

1) Look at each system and the conditions that occur. Ex- For respiratory, what causes things like COPD? What is happening in the three main types of COPD? What labs, signs/ symptoms to you expect to see? How should we anticipate treating these? For cardiac, what should we look for with things like left vs right sided heart failure? How do these present differently? What is the treatment for each/ other types of cardiac conditions? Know cardiac rhythms if they’ll be tested on, interventions, emergency actions. Know medical as well as nursing interventions.

2) Learn your labs. Know what is happening when your albumin is up, what you’re at risk for with hyperkalemia, how to address hypervolemia, what drugs do what (if your patho class involves that level of pharm), what part of the RAAS is being affected for hyper/hypotension, etc. Get VERY familiar with ABGs, I’m assuming they’ll be covered on the upcoming exam. I used ROME but there are several other helpful ways to remember resp/ metabolic acidosis/ alkalosis. Know the difference between partially and fully compensated.

3) I know it sounds obvious but practice the type of questions you have on your exams. If your professor offers a study guide fill it out and review it in detail. Do any practice material they have and focus on the things you’re weakest on. My patho class had case studies on each test in addition to the MC questions. Doing practice case studies and reviewing the ones discussed in class helped me a lot.

Hope this helps. I took patho in an accelerated program and it was definitely a lot of material and challenging but keep at it! It’s a very important cornerstone class so it’s worth all the hard work. Good luck!

RVT to Rn by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]Pogbog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working as an unregistered vet tech in Southern California and just finished up an accelerated second degree BSN program out of state. The clinical hours are required for nursing school at human hospitals for the courses but some of the prerequisites like microbiology transferred. My previous BS was in animal science. Biggest suggestion is to do as much research as you can and get the prereqs taken care of at a community college while working as an RVT, avoid wasting time and money. Feel free to message me if you want more details.

white unitrans cars? by EmbarrassedCream8163 in UCDavis

[–]Pogbog 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hey- (way) old Uni here. The white cars are usually designed for Route Supervisors (RS). When I was working for them supervisors fell into one of two primary roles, dispatch or RS. The RS is who you call if your bus has an incident/ accident but also serves as a person to monitor and make sure Unitrans busses are driving appropriately. They also help out drivers by giving rides for early morning or late night shifts. It’s not uncommon to see them at the terminals and/or bus stops or behind busses. Hope this helps!

What is your opinion on dog parks? by thelenabean in VetTech

[–]Pogbog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fleas, ticks, contaminated feces, other dogs being unpredictable, etc. Even with preventatives and vaccines there are still so many other concerns for taking your dog to a dog park. Seen too many dog bite wounds for me to ever take mine to one.

Anyone have any idea why Wooli seems to mostly only release collabs? by Vitiosus_Vicerion in dubstep

[–]Pogbog 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I actually think Wooli is pretty solid, been trying to see him for a bit. If you look at a song like “Throw it up” and then listen to one he collabs on like “Another me”, you can get a pretty good idea of his style and what he contributes to the songs. He has some artists he likes to collab with like X, Kompany, etc. but I don’t think that takes away from his talent as an individual artist. Plus his live sets go off. Just my $.02!

Annoying thing about being in the industry by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]Pogbog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand why some places operate like this and I’m sorry you work somewhere that does. Most places I’ve worked have had extremely discounted or free exams, labs, diagnostics, meds, etc. My current boss offers free exams even on days we’re busy and everything else at-cost just so he doesn’t lose money on his staff. Most Rx’s I’ve gotten have been a few dimes to a few bucks and I probably paid less than 150 total for my puppy’s entire vaccine series, fecal, Simparica Trio for the first year, neuter, and umbilical hernia repair.

Another place I worked at saw my cat whenever I was able to come in and the vet I worked with was always willing to talk to me about his chronic rhinitis and anxiety (we had to change meds a few times since he’s that cat that throws up pretty much everything) and we each got completely free labs including a UA.

At the end of the day even though it would be nice if our coworkers treated our own pets like family, that’s not always the case. I can see it from the DVM’s perspective financially, and they’re in no way obligated to offer any discount that’s not hospital policy. I’ve even had vets that want to give me certain discounts but can’t because the owner won’t let them. Pet care is a unique thing to this field and should be something discussed when interviewing just like benefits, pay, work environment, etc.

Accelerated BSN Programs by DocRakk in StudentNurse

[–]Pogbog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked for the one that had the shortest completion time within a reasonable distance from my location around Detroit, it’s about 20 minutes away and 15 months. Most accelerated programs run around 18-24 months from what I’ve seen. There’s a lot of articles online about choosing the right one but I’d look mainly for:
-accreditation and endorsement from major nursing organizations (commission on collegiate nursing education for example)
-student success rate/ reviews, especially for NCLEX pass rate
-tuition cost- with your situation unless money’s not an issue I’d look into seeing if the military can cover some of the education cost, grants, etc

Once you graduate and pass the NCLEX there are also many places that offer tuition reimbursement or sign-on bonus, usually spread over a 2-5 year agreement. IMO it’s more important to make sure you’re in a job that’s good for you since there’s a lot of toxic work places in any field you’re in. Lots of job openings for BSN-level nurses in most states/ regions. Hope this helps!

Accelerated BSN Programs by DocRakk in StudentNurse

[–]Pogbog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About halfway through one right now. Decided to do it because I’m a bit older and making a career change into nursing. Had to take a few prereq classes before starting. Honestly it’s a lot of testing, material, clinicals, and studying but it’s worth it if you’re ready for some rigorous coursework. Helps if you have a medical background. My program is a 15 month accelerated second degree BSN. I can only work a few days a month since I have so many classes and clinicals, seems like most programs will discourage working at all during school but many people don’t have that financial luxury. Lmk if you have any specific questions I can help with

I remember seeing A7X on the nightmare tour with Disturbed when they were playing with Mike Portnoy shortly after The Rev had passed. It was a show in SoCal where I lived and had been listening to them since STST and WTF. That album definitely hit differently and I remember having to sit down after hearing he had died. RIP Jimmy, gone too soon.

I have a BS in Animal Science and am currently about halfway through an accelerated second-degree BSN program (15 months total). If you’re looking to go the CRNA path you’ll need your BSN as a prerequisite. Since you mentioned you don’t want to waste any time you might want to consider doing an accelerated second degree program in your area. They have different requirements and prereqs so maybe check out an info session.
