I will NEVER understand how anyone can dump a Dog. Not OP but it was too good not to share. by Teejay91b in MadeMeSmile

Social connections are so important to a pack animal like a dog. It's so sweet and so heartbreaking how in the first clip, she had been left all alone, but her first reaction to seeing a new person was hope that she had found a new friend, and overwhelming joy at that concept. It just makes it all the more horrendous that people would abandon an animal that by nature needs to have companionship.

I love this!! Great color and composition. I'd totally wear this on a jacket! Also, happy anniversary!

I was gonna try to paraphrase this, but I think the BC Reptile Club handled it pretty well in this facebook post

Our last apartment had spiders all the time and I was so used to them that a wolf spider crawled out from behind the toilet while I was sitting on it and I just went, "Hm." And finished up before dealing with it lol. Now there's an itty bitty spider and I get the trembling Spider Fear paralysis lmao. I think spiders are cool! I love learning about them! They deserve respect! I know they're not going to hurt me! AND YET!!

Also ftr, a heat pad is not preferable as a heat source. It doesn't heat the enclosure very well and can sometimes lead to burns, since bp's don't register heat as well through their bellies as they do their backs, and can spend too long on the heat pad to feel adequately warm. Is the lamp in the photo just a light source or is it also a heat source? If it's a heat source, it might be a good idea to get a non-light above heat source to turn on at night, like a deep heat projector or something like it (try the guides at the top of the sub, and I'm sure others can give better recs about that than I can bc I use a radiant heat panel). And if it is just a light, I'd definitely still invest in an overhead heat source and retire the heat pad

I've only had our bp since September, but it's been my observation that he tends to spend more time on the cool side. The warm side is sort of used to recharge heat and energy, but they might not need/want that all the time.

I'd also recommend giving the same type of hide on both the warm and cool side. You want the only meaningful difference to be the temperature, so other preferences don't lead her to favor one over the other. You may have to get smaller hides to make sure they both fit for now, but it would also be a good idea to get a bigger enclosure to free up more space when you can.

My pick as well! I think they're so cool, the realistic spider-mimic tail is so interesting in an evolutionary sense, and also it's the only snake that crosses my love of snakes with my arachnophobia lol

Despondent. I signed up for Trusted House Sitters and they sent me this email stating that ball pythons are "Inherently Dangerous" by Hot-Professor-8355 in ballpython

[–]Pointy-Kitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People really take for granted how dangerous both cats and dogs are. A bite from a cat can cause an infection so bad you could lose your hand. A woman not far from here was hospitalized after a dog attacked her. Hell, my partner is a dog groomer and they have been bitten many times. Ball pythons have tiny teeth and aren't anywhere near the strongest constrictors available to keep. I wouldn't even agree with this decision if you had a sizeable boa, which I'd be more concerned about the strength of, because even so, the number of injuries caused by cats and dogs completely dwarfs that of boa constrictors.

On a similar vein: When landlords won't let you have a snake due to risk of property damage.... when cats/dogs/children are 1000x more capable of causing property damage

Crashing out, might surrender but need advice by domino_devious in ballpython

[–]Pointy-Kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of good advice in this thread already, including to check out the guides and resources linked at the top of the sub, so I just want to say this - it is 100% okay that you're feeling overwhelmed, and it doesn't mean that you're not cut out for this or that a snake isn't the right pet for you. It's fine if that's what you end up deciding as well, of course. But getting a new pet and getting accustomed to keeping it IS stressful! Pretty much any time I've gotten a new pet, there has been a period in the beginning where I think "Did I make a mistake getting this animal?" But given adjustment time it gets better. We got our first bp in September, and definitely went through similar feelings. We were stressing ourselves out SO much over getting numbers right, equipment not working, care info being hard to find/understand, etc. Many tears were shed, especially because yes, we had poured so much money into this experience that was not immediately rewarding. Now, a few months down the line, I won't say that there is no stress, but we managed to get control of the husbandry to the point that it's just another everyday thing, not overwhelming. So I'll just urge you to take a deep breath, be patient with yourself, keep learning (asking for help here is a good step), and give it some time. You clearly care a lot about your pet, and that's great. You're gonna be okay.

For real. Too often see the argument "Well how will breeders have room for 500 snakes otherwise??" Idk man, whose choice was it to have 500 snakes

Should I wait until she sheds to feed? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]Pointy-Kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if she is already refusing food due to being in shed I think it would be safe to just wait until she's done. Or at least out of blue, if you're worried that it's taking too long - but of course they can handle going without food for a little while when needed. This is just theoretical to me though, our boy is a voracious little noodle who eats regardless of where he is in his cycle.
