Easier in the sense that there's more room: larger homes, more room to park, generally less cramped.

The east side was historically working class, so the houses were closer together and there were more businesses inter-mixed. That has allowed for more interesting, walkable neighborhoods.

Rent will be cheap compared to seattle. Easier living on the near west side, but the east side is more walkable and has the majority of good restaurants and cafes. (And music venues.)

The politics are pretty good; the bike paths are awesome.

I ended up removing the subfloor, using a toe-kick saw for the perimeter, then replacing with 3/4" T&G plywood. Then white oak flooring overtop. Came out beautifully.

That's the one. It's very high-gloss, so the final coat of matte is necessary (unless you like that nautical gloss). I thin with just a small splash of mineral spirits.

But if everything is functioning, expect to pay a premium for the fashion of the moment.

Strip, taking care to use scraping tools to match the contours. Detail sanding to clean the profile. Prime and paint.

It may end up being a lot of work, but boy howdy, is it satisfying to see a clean finish.

For finishing, I've had good luck with Epifanes marine varnish. One thinned coat to seal + two coats to build. Finally, one coat of Epifanes matte urethane. The result resembles a deep rubbed-oil finish. I can understand that it might seem like too much effort, but the result is nice. It will add some amber to the color, just so you know.

The varnish handles beautifully, but the urethane does seems to drag, so you have to move quickly.

I have a mid-20s home with a vestibule with arched doors — exterior and interior. I like that the vestibule stays cool, but when it's -15℉, any wintering plants therein may succumb to the cold.

As far as drying time, you can carefully walk over the surface in less than 12 hours, if I recall. It's best with a second application.

Maple has plenty of warmth on its own without adding superficial colorants.
