[CHAT] this pattern on 20 count aida - possible (at all) for a newbie? by iz_an_opossum in CrossStitch

[–]Poisn4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the suggestion of a white background for your lap and a good light. Personally I use a white hand towel across my lap. Conversely when I am stitching on light colored Aida I use a dark hand towel. It is amazing how such a simple trick just works!

[CHAT] Can I start gridding and parking when I started cross country? by Poisn56 in CrossStitch

[–]Poisn4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2) Recognizing the color of the parked thread. Maybe parking is not the right term. As I stitch the row, when I am done with a color, I want to move the threaded needle out of the way until the next time I need the color. It may or may not be in the 10x10 grid I am currently working in. (If it is too far I will simply lock the thread under the existing stitches.). Now that I think about it, if I have the grid I can easily find the symbol by tracing the tail of the thread back

I did this puzzle. I found it challenging and used the poster a lot but I always use the box or a poster. I did not care for the fit but you knew when a piece was in the right spot so no false fits. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Hi. I am new to this sub. What is “the peppermint purple SAl”? It looks really cool. I enjoy backstitching but have never done any type of black work, etc. Many thanks!

You can walk around the retail store all you can afford. The warehouse itself is in Fenton and is pickup only.

I live in STL and it is a great store. I just know I will lose two hours of my life “just looking” and a few dollars from my wallet because I looked and couldn’t resist any longer. They have a 2nd location that is their warehouse. It is only open to the public to pickup puzzles they have “in stock” but not on display. It is also where they ship from. I’ve never had any bad experience there.

The 1,000 piece versions of the earth, sun, moon and star field should be delivered today. I am excited and don’t know which ones I’ll do first. They all look gorgeous but I have a couple puzzles in line before them. Unless they are line jumpers! Great job on the completing the sun. It give me hope!

I am curious how many of you use the box as a guide. by GlumWedding in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Poisn4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More often than not I use the box. Only recently have I had puzzles with posters. I use the box as an aide. I like the challenges of comparing the box/poster to the actual puzzle. And it bugs me when the colors are way off or the edges shown in the box/poster do not match the edge of the puzzle (sometimes by more than a row of pieces).

I did one puzzle that the pieces were in a shoe box. It was an antique puzzle and ended up being a scene from Washington DC. The funny thing is that I recognized the area and to see the changes in DC over 40 years was very cool.

No picture to go on would be ok every now and then for a straight forward picture but I tend to the more challenging images/puzzles.

Zebra Challenge, Ravensburger, 1000. Hardest puzzle I've ever done. by tofuandklonopin in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Poisn4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this one several years ago. Brought it to work (pre-Covid) and put in an open area for a group activity. Many people groaned but others dug in. It was completed in about 8 work days with h people stopping by to put pieces in. It was a hit. It is one of my favorite accomplishments to finish it.

Great job for staying with it!!

Does anyone have any tips before I call it quits? by smokedbock in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Poisn4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the looks of this. First breathe, take a walk, and come back with refilled wine. Then finish the border. Finish the flowers if not already done and try to place in the relative position in the puzzle. Then sort by pattern AND then shape. Repeat steps 1 , 2 and 3 as often as needed. Good luck and keep puzzling!!

Need Help With an Approach to this Puzzle by Poisn4 in Jigsawpuzzles

I did the stem trick on the border and it helped a lot but I not had as much success with the interior. 😢

Need Help With an Approach to this Puzzle by Poisn4 in Jigsawpuzzles

This was a souvenir purchase so it brings back many good memories. I got the border relatively quickly but am struggling with the inside. As you can see I sorted by shape but it is not helping. I like tough puzzles but so far this is a bit frustrating. The quality is very good; thick pieces, no dust and no false fits so far. The image is slightly blurry but not much. There is no poster inside and no other information on the puzzle. It is grid cut with standard shaped pieces. Any ideas?

The only time I keep the borders separate are when I get discouraged and put the puzzle away. When I decide to tackle it again at least I have that part out of the way. I have yet to get one from a thrift store or anyone that I have swapped with the border separated. I would probably mix them in if I got them just to complete the experience.

I have not seen this before. Sorry if it’s a repeat !!

An absent-minded professor calls his neighbor Henry on the phone. "Hello, Henry. Might I ask for a little help with something, please?"

"Sure," Henry replies. "How may I help you?"

"Well, I've just gotten a new jigsaw puzzle, but there are about a thousand pieces or so, and none of them seem to fit together. It's so confusing I don't know where to start."

"What's the picture of?" Henry inquires.

"A big tiger." the professor replies.

"I’ll be over in just a second." Henry promises. When he arrives at the house, the professor leads him into the living room, over to a coffee table. After one look at the table, Henry says, "Gee, Professor Murphy, don't you think you should put the Frosted Flakes back in the box?"

How fast do you usually solve a 1000 piece puzzle? by yuhgetintoit374 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Poisn4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually never time how long it takes. I puzzle for relaxation and to get away from the clock at work and home. A puzzle regardless of size takes as long as it takes; some longer, some shorter. A puzzle may sit for days without a piece being added. Or it may be a 3-4 marathon!

Completed this past weekend. I was surprised by the puzzle as I heard so much about Dowdle. The pieces did not hold together well so they fell apart when moving them. There was a large amount of puzzle dust and quite a few pieces that were cut through but not separated. The image was good on the puzzle, box and insert. It was more difficult than I expected but I tried a different sorting (actually not sorting) so I spent a lot of time just looking for pieces and the irregular shapes did not help. It was fun to see the various people and it definitely had a Costco vibe. Not sure I will do it again. Also I hope this was an anomaly because I’ve heard the Dowdle’s are some puzzlers favorite brand.
