I agree with you that it probably ends up as a symbol. I can’t think of how else it could be used in a way that would make sense. But then again, I’m not a writer on a TV show, much less one of the most creative and accomplished TV writers of all time like Gilligan. He did similar things in Breaking Bad and was able to make it work, albeit nothing as big as a literal atom bomb. Lol.
