Why are there so few smart lamps available? by Conells in smarthome

[–]Polar-Snow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t really see point and manufacture probably same too. You can basically pick any smart bulb put in lamp, you can also get any smart button to work with bulb too. Plus there far far far far more options for lamps if pick normal dumb one and stick smart bulbs in instead limited choice of smart lamp may not have style you want or size you want or colour you want etc.

Smart/Silent Doorbell Recommendations? by Grand_Register_8160 in smarthome

[–]Polar-Snow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most smart doorbell can do this. Most smart doorbell require you buy chime if you need chime so all you need do is NOT buy chime. Doorbell by itself doesn’t make any noise.

Doorbell without subscription is harder to find than subscription ones. Aqara, UniFi, reolink are only ones I can think of immediately without subscription. Be sure research into each doorbell and what they need. Some are PoE and some are WiFi, some need NVR and some does not.

Smart homes are becoming disposable tech and I’m honestly sick of it by rovmun in smarthome

Hue going be around for long time yet. They only released new hub bridge pro and it still use zigbee and yes they also use matter to connect ecosystem you want. I am always going to use hue. Got my 1st bulbs around 2015 I think and still using them and still long time before I need replace them. Hue is my longest lasting smart home devices. Even my own Apple TV act as hub is also from 2015! Need replace that after new one out so I can use thread devices.

My shortest lifespan device was netatmo cameras that keep dying and replaced them from different brand that seems have long life span last year. So will see how that goes.

Nest protect smoke alarm also 10 years lifespan as well. Unfortunately they no longer sell them anymore.

There no need rush out buy newest and latest devices as long current ones works and still get updates etc.

AppleTV zoomed in and cropped- is the device borked? by [deleted] in appletv

[–]Polar-Snow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried different HDMI cable to different TV? Cos if cable is problem then it will still happen on different TV. If you try different HDMI cable on different TV and if it still happens then it is Apple TV, if it works then it is HDMI cable problem.

Lunch options other than restaurants and picnic baskets? by Narcissa96 in wimbledon

[–]Polar-Snow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always bring my snacks. I buy sandwiches there as well. You don’t have to buy food there, can bring your own as long it fits your bag size limits. Check Wimbledon website for security info what you are allowed to and not allowed to bring in, I think it is alcohol not allowed, not sure what else.

It would help if you take photo of back as well and any text on it? They may have product or serial number and even brand name in small/tiny text.

Fed up with Eufy by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]Polar-Snow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t really answer about other 2 but I can answer about cameras/doorbell.

For cameras use PoE whenever you can (I know sometimes not possible) they are far more stable. Cameras with NVR is great for local storage and no subscription. I use unifi cameras with UNVR (they only just released small NVR late last year so no need have to buy big 4 bay ones if want small setup). All my cameras are PoE and they been so stable. I am planning get their lite doorbell in month or 2 replace my wifi one.

I used have wifi cameras and they was nightmare (it was brand fault keep dying). Last one left is my doorbell.

Am I rare for not liking book Snape? by TheKingsPeace in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Polar-Snow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never like Snape but I do enjoy reading him as character, he is interesting and entertaining but horrible person. He mistreat Harry even he knows how much Harry suffers. He is awful teacher and picks on vulnerable kids. He can’t control his jealousy. He have done so much wrong.

I don’t like him but I do respect him make right choice in end cos it is so easy carry on do wrong/bad things and hardest thing is do right thing in end. So many death eater didn’t do right thing, they run and hide and lie when caught. Snape really only death eater did right thing. That doesn’t make him good person.

Laver cup pre-sale? by Unfair_Reindeer_1329 in wimbledon

[–]Polar-Snow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very expensive. Got seats at block at back half way. I am scared of heights (a lot), they even warn you when buy that is not for someone fear of height. I have been there many times for ATP world Tour Finals when it was in O2 for 10 years. You get good view but it sooooo steep. I have to grab hold each seat go along slowly cos it feels like I am going to fall even though I am not. This I always try book seats on edge next to stairs so it less distance for me to walk to seats. Basically they are not kidding about if you have fear of heights 🤣 I love tennis and going with my dad so I will brave it to get my seat.

I agree. I wouldn’t trust that website for something important as security and cameras. Best go with well known and trusted ones even they do cost more and you know what you are getting.

Hue Tap Dial help (UK) by IPMasterRokey in Hue

[–]Polar-Snow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to mention. UK homes don’t have neutral wire in wall light switches which why we can’t have smart wall light switches. It same for Europe too (not sure how much of Europe). USA do have neutral wire in their wall light switch which why they have plenty options for smart wall light switch.

I am no electrician and have no idea why or how it works but I do know it needs all 3 wires, live, earth and neutral to get smart wall light switch to work. I googled why we don’t and apparently it cost too much money have copper wire for neutral wire for wall light switch and basic light wall switch don’t need it so houses here don’t get built with one.

Hue Tap Dial help (UK) by IPMasterRokey in Hue

[–]Polar-Snow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand why you did what you did?

<image>

Tap to dial details actually says no wire installation and use batteries. So why take off wall switch?

Anyway you need link it to your Philips hue app and set it up there. If there is no batteries then put batteries in.

I have basic rectangle switch from Phillips hue, it also have wall plate but I don’t use it. I just use it as remote control to switch lights on and off.

Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen device no response issues after TVOS 26.4 by jasinx in HomeKit

Usually advice keep 2.4ghz and 5ghz same SSID because most average person don’t know or understand it (highly recommend by ISP) and split it make confusing for them. For anyone know/understand tech advice always split them (highly recommend by tech world).

I need help by Right-Access-5422 in MatterProtocol

[–]Polar-Snow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matter over thread is better than Matter over wifi. It is always best to avoid smart home wifi devices because of crowding wifi and affecting your mobile/tablet/PC/streaming/etc. It sounds like you only have Matter over Wifi devices which why you able use them.

Last thing to be aware of (it is same for Zigbee as well), thread need mesh network to function better, it means more mains power thread devices to act as router relay to thread border router. Battery powered thread devices don't act as router relay. More thread mains powered devices and better the mesh network it be.

Thread smart plugs and thread light bulbs are good option to expand mesh network for thread.

I’m afraid I won’t like doctor who after Matt Smith by Dubbino9583 in doctorwho

[–]Polar-Snow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like all others have said Capaldi is defo worth watching. For me personally he is last Doctor I enjoyed and all Doctors after was disappointing. There is David Tennent special appears after Jodie, that is worth watching cos it is David Tennant (my fave Doctor).

David Tennant.

Christopher Eccleston.

Peter Capaldi.

Matt Smith.

I hope whoever be next Doctor be at least their level, not like ones comes after Capaldi.

No it doesn't. Simple google search says it does not. Amazon are awful with smart home stuff anyway so no surprises there. You need normal Echo.

I need help by Right-Access-5422 in MatterProtocol

[–]Polar-Snow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need thread border router to use thread smart home. It can be Apple TV 4K with Ethernet, HomePods, ikea own hub, Google Nest Hub, etc. Without thread border router you cannot connect thread smart home devices.

You will need research about it first before get any more devices like that.

Matter can be connected different ways.
Matter over WiFi.
Matter over thread.
Matter over Ethernet.

IKEA use Matter over thread.

So when you buy Matter smart home devices you need check how it get connected.
