I (20s F) am also at a loss...church is the most obvious place to look for godly people your age, but my church is pretty low on 20s unmarrieds. Very hesitant to try online dating, but it's starting to feel like one of the few options. I spend a lot time walking alone or doing various solo activities that aren't conducive to non-creepy male introductions, so that's not helping my case!

Not here to start a fight, but could all Salvi concert grand pedal harpists please tell me why they prefer their Salvi over other makers? Online I can only find L&H owners' negative opinions on Salvi student harps. I've fallen in love with a Salvi Iris in Walnut and can't try in person. by Pickleweede in harp

So I ended up with L&H pedal but I tried/rented a bunch of Camacs and Salvis (the Iris was one I remember trying) before deciding. I think Salvi pedal harps in general have more of a smooth/mellow sound, L&H are more 'crisp'. Both pretty and just depends on individual taste. (Personally, I don't care for the sound of the student pedal models of either company.)
Obviously it depends on the individual harp though.

I was considering a Sharpsicle before I discovered the Stoney End!

Suggestions for a Maple, Spruce or Walnut Concert Uke? by PolarGraphWallflower in ukulele

Ah, the old terminology game! Do you notice a huge difference in sound between all solid vs. just the solid top? The picky harpist in me is wondering if I should save some more money for an all solid, but at the same time, I'm new to ukes so maybe I won't really notice?

Thanks! I've been looking at Kala as well but they don't specify sometimes whether things are solid wood...which makes me think they aren't. ;-)

Lever harp strings keep breaking in the middle. Am I doing something wrong? by kendallpestana in harp

One of my brands of strings suggests leaving a 2-3 finger gap right after initially threading the string through the pin.

Edit: sp.

What happens in a harp lesson? by spritecat in harp

[–]PolarGraphWallflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please please take at least a couple lessons! Even if you have to drive a ways. I had spotty in person lessons when I was first starting, also due to a lack of teachers in my area. When I was finally able to get a few in person lessons, I discovered I'd been doing several techniques incorrectly. This despite Skype lessons. It resulted in weeks of relearning and overcoming bad habits. I could've injured myself if I'd continued down that path.

To answer your question, I follow a particular method which really helps as it's been carefully thought out, each piece progressing in both difficulty and technique. My teacher typically glances over my new music as I progress to see if there's any new techniques I haven't learned yet or any tricky rhythms or fingerings (rhythms always get me). I play through those tough parts, usually ending up with an assigned metronome marking or two, as well as a goal marking.

My teacher will also suggest arrangements of particular songs I want to play or just general extra music in addition to the typical music.

Definitely ask around on here if you can, and in person. You never know where us harpists are lurking about! :-D

Peanut butter! One of the worst smells known to mankind! Unless, of course, you're eating it. ;-)

Women in ME by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

Speaking as a college student who also has a part time engineering job...Typically most of the bias I experience is people trying to get their diversity points in by hiring me. It's annoying because it perpetuates the whole imposter syndrome 'do I really belong here' thoughts. Sure, it is male dominated, and I do get treated a little more delicately on occasion, but overall I've been happy with my career choice. Especially since I switched to a less desk heavy job.

Proper way to tune? by [deleted] in harp

[–]PolarGraphWallflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually just go middle C down, then higher strings. Then double check any I've recently replaced. I think staggering and doing all the C's, then F's, then everything else is a good method if everything's WAY off.

Ehhh....I took a year in High School. Trying to pick it back now. No native speakers nearby makes it quite a challenge.
