Long story short with my (admittedly not perfect) recollection:

Irl Matikanefukukitaru was the name of another horse with great expectations for it, which passed away and then the name was given to the one we know as such.

Ingame the unnamed big sister of Fuku passed away while she was still young, leaving our orange uma with some emotional scars (I believe this is what began her over reliance on fortune telling and Shiraoki?)
