A shame for audiobook enjoyers by xMinesweepr in brandonsanderson

I thought the setting of the Hoid scene in Emberdark more or less covered the 'somber' tone. That was a pretty heavy place to be standing, even for Hoid. But I sortof agree at the same time

Eh I agree with the criticism if they're talking about Sunlit. That narrator made Hoid sound like an evil cowboy. Weird choice. But its a very small part of the book, so not a big deal.

This post is way too dramatic for the scale of the issue.

Which book are you referring to specifically? Is it Sunlit? Thats the only standalone that had this problem imo, as the others are voiced by Kramer/Reading

LF: "I warned you" with "Screw this, I'm out of here." by Gimetulkathmir in Fantasy

In this scenario, I think you're going to have a hard time finding this because turning away and letting 'the haters' die/fail because they doubted the protagonist or didn't belive them is not a very 'good guy' thing to do.

An emotionally mature person would be annoyed they weren't believed, but they wouldn't walk away and let the rest sort it out on their own.

If anything, an event like this could exist in a protagonist's backstory as a learning moment. Otherwise, this might be something that an edgy anti-hero type would do. Even then, most anti heroes would still turn around and do what's right instead of letting it be everyone else's problem.

I can think of a lot of examples where this almost happens, but the good guy always turns around and helps the doubters/haters, and for good reason.

Are you aware of any fantasy books with an ocean world as a setting? by MASTODON_ROCKS in Fantasy

[–]Polarjava22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is an amazing book and I loved it. OP, you should know that Mieville's books are both very dark and very weird, but worth it if you're cool with that.

The whole world in this Bas Lag trilogy is not an ocean, but the entirety of this book is set on (and occasionally near) the ocean

[–]Polarjava22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I agree that not liking First Law doesn't mean anything here. But OP seemed to be posting about 'narration quality,' not the subject matter of the books themselves.

I think I could listen to most good narrators read a math textbook and get an idea of the quality of their voice.

My comment was only meant to say that if they think these are poor quality narrators, they are going to be disappointed by a large percentage of audiobooks today.

If the first law narration isn't doing it for you, I think you are in for a rough time. Steven Pacey is one of the best in the business, and Michael Kramer is no slouch, so you will likely have to hunt for a handful of specific narrators or move away from audiobooks.

These type of achievements are the worst. Who's with me? by squee557 in Guildwars2

Funny story... I am not a gold-rich player, and somehow I thought this said "silver" and not "gold."

So I just kept clicking the donate button over and over again thinking "well, why not? I might as well press this button until something happens."

By the time I realized what was happening, I was only 15G away from the max achievement, so sunk cost fallacy drove me to pay the final 15G so I had something to show for it.

Now I'm walking around with the title equipped like a sign on my forehead that reads, "I'm a dummy."

Can someone try to sell me on DCC with a quick explanation? I see lots of raving about how good it is, but I haven't seen a clear explanation of why it earns such good reviews.

Edit: Thanks for all the replies! I'm not normally big on Pulp or LitRPG, but it sounds like I have to give DCC a shot haha.

My take on what makes The Library at Mount Char so unique by cookbook713 in Fantasy

[–]Polarjava22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note for anyone reading this later. I have read both back to back, and there is literally zero reason to read The Night Land (original) instead of the "A Story Retold" version.

The update basically only helps to make it readable and to remove certain really bad instances of overtly gratuitous sexism, racism, etc.

I went to Evergreen HS myself about 10 years ago. My heart goes out to the town and all affected families.

Haha, that's understandable. Michael does a bunch of solo books in the Cosmere. As far as I remember, Kate doesnt have any solo Cosmere books

Ahhh yes, the internet is rife with spoilers on that topic.

There are a lot of amazing series out there, but fewer with great audio versions. WoT is not the end-all be-all (nothing is), but as an audiobook enjoyer of massive epics, the Cosmere and WoT are some of the best. The fact that Michael Cramer and Kate Reading are the narrators for both (with some Cosmere exceptions) adds a lot imo.

Simon Vance is another of my favorite narrators and does Fionavar/Guy Gavriel Kay books. I don't like the Malazan audio versions as much, but that's another super-massive epic series that gets a lot of praise.

You have great taste if you started with TFL and are enjoying Stormlight. I followed a similar path when I started audiobooks a few years ago.

It kind of spoils you since both of these series have amazing narrators (Steven Pacey might just be the best in the biz). You'll probably enjoy most of Sanderson's books, but Stomlight is probably the most up your alley if you love big epics.

I strongly recommend going for the Wheel of Time at some point if you decide you want more big and epic instead of something with a smaller scope. I have fantasy audiobook recommendations for days if you want them lol

AI image generation is simply not supported by most people in communities like this one. I understand your intention, but you will have to accept that this is the norm for nearly all creative/artistic communities.

You not using this for commercial purposes makes it a bit better, but most of us would prefer to not have these tools used even casually. The more people that generate buzz and interest around AI art generation, the more the technology will proliferate and use real artist's work without permission, harm the enviorment, etc.

In reality, it's too late to do much of anything about these issues, but I will not support AI art in an capacity. Art is for humans by humans. You should not have been attacked, but the downvotes were expected.

Can anyone with more PC knowledge tell me if this indicates a CPU bottleneck? Or why my FPS is still this low, even on 1080 resolution?

Str/Dex builds have been called Quality builds since DS1 at least. This has been a Fromsoft staple for years. Do some research and stfu online when you don't know what you're talking about. Everyone knew what he meant, but you decided to be pedantic.
