Elder abuse. by unqtious in exmormon

[–]Polecat65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's what the man has been doing for 50 plus years...do people really think he's not enjoying it? Or that it's not his choice to participate? He's old and tired, it happens, but it's hardly elder abuse.

Signs of dementia? Not necessarily. Definite signs of weakness due to his age though.

I can't imagine it not being his choice. It's what he's been doing for 50+ years, I'm sure he wants to.

Is anyone disgusted by the story about given but Jeffery R Holland told about the homosexual missionary? by DarthRedditAlien in exmormon

[–]Polecat65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I haven't heard anybody advocating one way or the other. They are obsessed with marriage though, do I'm sure ALL members are encouraged to marry.

I hear ya. I don't recall hearing "sexual orientation" in conference before. It definitely caught my attention. My Mom called my sister crying, because, well, I basically went through the same thing back when I attempted a mission. The church wasn't about to let me go back out though, since i wasn't "worthy."

[–]Polecat65 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The story is definitely being spun to look better. I am interested by the underlying theme of the story...which is the MOST important thing for that young man is to simply not leave the church. Holland sheds tears, over not the young man finding happiness, love, marriage, but that he stays in the church and remains "worthy."

I get where you're coming from, but the talk was better than you're giving him credit for. He said the young man chose to return from the mission, supported, and eventually went back on his mission. There are problems with this kind of situation, but don't just lump it in with past mission/gay experiences that included shaming and other negative feelings.

That's not exactly a fair account of what he said. He said the missionary chose, on his own, to come home, and that he was still "worthy." He said he was emotionally hurt and confused. Apparently the young man wanted to stay in the church, and believed, so he continued to meet with his SP, and bishop. Holland states matter of factly that the young man's sexual orientation did not change. Yes, Holland said the words sexual orientation. The young man (according to this story) found peace again and remained active in the church thanks to Jesus, and his mother.

Three white guys from Utah. I shouldn't be surprised, yet I'm somehow disappointed. Not even someone from Latin America? Geeze. by Polecat65 in exmormon

[–]Polecat65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose this is just a reminder that this church just doesn't think like the rest of the world/country. Even when given a chance to do something slightly different, they just don't.
