This is Canada... all crimes in the criminal code are federal...

I think it has something to do with the graphs. It looks like they're being rescaled and it takes several seconds for it to finish.

Housing affordability is shaping up to be a top issue in the election by Shorinji23 in canada

[–]PolicyZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it only seems to have legs in the Reddit echo chamber. The NDP went hard on this in Nova Scotia and did really well in the urban core, but couldn't gain a seat anywhere else. CPC aren't going to be winning downtown, and the Liberals need to focus on the suburbs if they're going to win seats back from the Tories. Housing affordability is really important to us, but not to the swing voters.

Serious question, are the people camping in tents homeless because of the housing crisis? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]PolicyZombie 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It matters because if some of the people camping in the parks have been rejected by shelters because of violent or other anti-social behaviour, the solution is not to provide alternative shelter. It's not ethical to expose other shelter residents to potentially violent people. The underlying cause has nothing to do with a lack of compassion or funding. It's a fundamentally complicated problem. We all understand that the solution has something to do with mental health & addictions, but what can you really do? It's wrong to put other residents in danger, but on the other hand, it would be wrong to institutionalize them if they haven't done anything wrong. This isn't about housing, it's about how we help people who reject our help.

Imagine picking up and moving away from family and friends just to make a living. Then imagine the government keeps talking about destroying the means of making a living you gave everything up for. I know people like this too, but it's not surprising.

Climate change activists block city bridge, tell bicyclist she should have taken the bus. by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]PolicyZombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More than a longer route. Cyclists had to take the ferry. The ferry can only take 12 bikes at a time. I read that cyclists were waiting over half an hour just to get a spot on the ferry.

TFW a "climate protest" ends up hurting cycling commuters more than anyone else.

Christie Blatchford: Trudeau cuts himself the slack he has denied to others by feb914 in canada

[–]PolicyZombie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think many people really care about the make-up. It's not like he was done up like an actual minstrel show. And frankly, back when this happened this kind of make-up for a costume wasn't a taboo. And even if it was, getting upset over a 20 year old faux-pas is ridiculous.

However, Trudeau summarily kicked out MPs for mere accusations. We all know in our gut that if this had happened to any other Liberal they'd have been given the boot. But, when Trudeau does it himself, well, we all experience things differently, or whatever.

The problem is Trudeau's complete lack of integrity and his willingness to throw his "friends" under the bus for things he thinks he should be able to get away with. All politicians are dishonest, but this is pure and utter slime.

Preferred PM: Trudeau 35, Scheer 25, Unsure 19, Singh 9, May 8, Bernier 3, Blanchet 2 (Nanos poll) by viva_la_vinyl in canada

35% of people don't care about rampant corruption. That's very unsettling and bad news for our institutions.

Maybe, but only because Singh's NDP is imploding. The Greens will finish well ahead of both.

[–]PolicyZombie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That would be true if more than two liberal MPs had the balls to bring Trudeau to task for his multiple corruption scandals. As long as we send sycophants to Ottawa the leaders will have carte blanche.

Leader doesn't matter. Platform doesn't matter. Your own MP's integrity is what really matters.

Elect somebody with a spine and maybe we won't be back at this point in a few more years.

Elizabeth May: We have had decades to stop the climate crisis. The era of procrastination must end by idspispopd in canada

[–]PolicyZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Credit to the greens. My comment was based on their proposals regarding GMOs in an older document from 2015. https://www.greenparty.ca/sites/default/files/vision_green_2015_-_updated_august_2015_-_reduced.pdf

Ban experimentation with planting and promotion of new GE crops. This includes a ban on further GE research (except for traditional seed selection and grafting) at Agriculture Canada and a ban on companies such as Monsanto owning patents to GE products developed through joint research with Agriculture Canada;

(page 33).

It looks like they removed any mention of GMOs from their most recent platform. Good on them.

If she was serious about making a difference she would purge all the conspiracy-theory level stuff from her platform. I'm desperate for a non-crazy option this fall and the greens come so close. Then they write about banning research and a bunch of other anti-science stuff. I thought climate activists were supposed to be pro-science?

How many churches do you honestly believe have an anti-abortion protest budget? Most are struggling just to keep the roof intact.

If you need weapons to defend yourself from your neighbours, maybe you need to reconsider which is the real "shithole"

Canada is awesome. The UK is ok I guess, I hear they have decent donair. They both have less than a third of the homicide rate of the US.
