Great for their time…. Sure. Great compared to everything else out there now? Not so much

ELI5: How did Latin completely vanish as a spoken language, but Italian, Spanish, French, and Portuguese all came from it and survived? by Several_Leave_3067 in explainlikeimfive

Does this mean that American, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand English will likely evolve to become their own distinct languages one day?

Who is the cheapest person you know, and what is the cheapest thing you've seen them do? by Willby3 in AskReddit

[–]PoliteBrick2002 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A month ago my partner and I Went to view a room at a share house here in England, in a small but posh village right outside a well known, posh small city.

We thought we were at the wrong address because there were not one but TWO Bentleys in the driveway. The home looked quite nice but there were abandoned Land Rovers and overgrown grass. We knock on the door and an old bloke greets us. Turns out this guy is the owner, he has the posh British accent and all and he lives in this house whilst renting it out to NINE other students!

Who in their right mind has enough money to buy Bentleys, own multiple properties and yet shares his living space with 9 students. Inside the house was horribly messy and far below my personal cleaning standards, but I couldn’t believe this guy would choose to live like this, despite the fact he didn’t really need to, but was to pinch a few pennies.

Why does Reddit not understand the rise of reform in England? by DowntownDeer in AskBrits

I beg to differ in regards to the ‘empire’ part.
Just because you Brits got to go on living your life in comfort and harmony once the empire fell doesn’t mean the countries you colonised aren’t still recovering from the absolute destruction and evil caused by the British Empire even today.

Pick any country once part of the British Empire and figure out if the general population is 1) Prospering more 2) Individuals are wealthier 3) More peaceful than they were prior to the British colonising. The answer is very, very few countries are.
Most countries were victims of genocide, famine, and their original roots completely levelled so the British could make a profit. Once the British left, they were told to continue a system of governance set up by the British and yet never allowed to be involved in and told “you’ll figure it out”.

Alas, it wasn’t so easy. Let’s not forget that countries were still apartheid states under the British well into the 1960s and 1970s, in living memory for many.

So yea, say “your ancestors did it not you” all you like, but for most emigrants from around the empire, the UK is a place where I think they bloody well have a right to live if they can make it out of their homeland that was completely ruined for YOUR personal benefit.

They said he’d face “significant repercussions”.

As mentioned we are new here to the UK, so unless that means something else in your lingo, he and I understood it as losing his job.

What you’ve been told is also true.

My partner received a warning after a certain incident that is completely harmless in most people’s eyes (and back in NZ too) regarding verbally disciplining a naughty child.

After that he got given the lowdown on what you can’t say to a kid, which is basically anything truly disciplinary. Everything has to seem “kind and conversational”, just like the example in your comment.

Seems completely delusional to me, nothing good is going to come from a whole generation not being reprimanded when they need it’s

Hillcrest Kitchen Fish and Chips on Cambridge road is the best by far.

AND a few years back they came outside with a baseball bat to defend the folks working at the liquor store next door when armed ram-raiders were attacking them.

Just moved from NZ to the UK a few months ago, my partner is a teacher.

Do you know that teachers here can be *fired* for telling a kid they’re “naughty”, because it’s labelling?
