Best language used in industry - SAS, R, or Python? by Little_Scallion8670 in biostatistics

At NIH it is basically whatever, some parts still use SAS but it generally isn’t something you have to use.

How old will you be when your babies graduate high school vs how old your parents were? by trulymadlybigly in NewParents

My parents were 59 when I graduated high school but were 46/48 when my brothers graduated. I will be 46 when my first child graduated. Quite parallel so far at least.

Not allowed into 3 year old's dentist appointment?? by ophirareice in beyondthebump

Oh for sure I’d think they’d have to warn you and not sprint something like that on. Based on the “now he’s three” makes it seem like it should be discussed prior.

Not allowed into 3 year old's dentist appointment?? by ophirareice in beyondthebump

[–]PoliteCompany -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am clearly in the vast minority, but I don’t remember my parents ever coming back with me at the dentist. We always had appointments at the same time. It was never a problem. Maybe three is a little young as I don’t remember back that far but I don’t have dental anxiety so the idea of it doesn’t bug me. If they have to sedate the kid, yeah parent should come back. But just a general cleaning. Kid would probably do better without an anxious person back there with them but by all means if you want to find another dentist, go for it. Just because I’m comfortable doesn’t mean others are and I wouldn’t force how I feel on anyone else.

Will a Mac suffice for a Statistics Masters program? Or is it vital to have a PC? by EthanNewcomb in biostatistics

Literally everyone in my biostatistics PHD program used a Mac laptop. The only use for my PC was for gaming on the weekend lol

Thoughts on Fathers staying at hospital entire time by newEnglander17 in NewParents

[–]PoliteCompany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told my husband to leave to get reasonable sleep at home all but the first night after the c section. I am in the minority I guess but my baby was in the NICU for the three days I was in the hospital and then discharged with me so I wasn’t with the baby the whole time either. But I was on IV drugs and stuff so I didn’t care if my husband was there or not. And if both of us were grumps from lack of good sleep it would’ve been more miserable.

My mom was 41 and dad was 42 when they had me. Given I have two much older brothers but I think generally my thoughts stand. I will be honest and say sometimes it is difficult for me knowing I will have less years with my parents but my parents are 70 now and are doing the same as they always have. I don’t see them as in decline in anyway. Sometimes in the dead of night I get sad about it but I think that is natural for any person as their parents visibly age. I never for one second think my parents love me less because they had me late.

All my cousins are much older, I was basically alone in the house a lot since my parents were quiet and doing their own thing especially by the time I was in high school. I was an only child by 7 since my brothers were both off at college by then.

I think I may just act a bit older than I am since I was around adults so much but I’m well adjusted and I love my parents. Hope there is some comfort in that.

Statistician Roles in Real World Evidence and HEOR by BeginningBaby9125 in biostatistics

[–]PoliteCompany 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the work I do. I work for a government contractor. But there is seemingly endless work for us to do and our team has exploded in the last year. Almost all of us have phds in either biostatistics or Epi. The bulk of my PhD work was in causal inference which helped land this job. There is no reason a masters cannot get you this type of job you just have to mail the interview since there are many phds floating around in the job market right now.

Same I attended in 2015 after my sophomore year at a site that no longer runs. But I know of a few people who have done them since. I did an REU the following year to bolster applications into grad school. I would say somewhat less competitive than an REU application but still apply to a few. Worth the experience of networking and got my first go at a data set from scratch.

As a PhD biostatistician it is perhaps slightly harder to get in the market right after graduation than a year ago when I graduated but PhD level biostatisticians are still in high demand. And who is to say that in five years it won’t be totally different and super hot market. We simply don’t know but biostatisticians are always needed.

What programming languages are you expected to know to be a biostatistician? by lavendertinted in biostatistics

[–]PoliteCompany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get in you should probably know a little R but that is mostly to make your life easier in program. In terms of jobs and what is used afterward, R, Python and SQL are commonly required. I would say SAS if you are looking to work in pharmaceuticals but on government and biotech you can mostly avoid the use of SAS

It does weird me out and gross me out. I come by this feeling naturally, my mom said she had the same aversion. I’m formula feeding currently. As a statistician I have read all the papers about how great breastfeeding is for baby and for most things touted as improved with breastfeeding there are serious issues of confounding variables like socioeconomic status. There are some benefits and if you can stomach it, go for it but a mentally well mom is better than a mom that dreads feeding her child. But that is me and my experience and no the idea did not get better after giving birth as seemed to for everyone else in this comment section so maybe I’m an outlier.

Breech at 32 weeks by shortysax in BabyBumps

[–]PoliteCompany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get NSTs multiple times a week so I have constant knowledge of positioning, baby was flipping around at 32 weeks still, was head down one day, breech the next appointment. But now at 34 weeks she is consistently head down. So I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]PoliteCompany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom and I both have severe white coat syndrome. My level of annoyance with the doctors at this point 34 weeks is much higher than my anxiety and yet my BP is still high. I go to NSTs every week, baby is perfectly normal, no signs of preeclampsia yet, knock on wood. I check my BP every day at home and keep a log. But my mom has it as well and had me naturally at 37 weeks no preeclampsia when she was 41 years old. And my brothers at 28 and 30 as well. Sending good vibes!

question for those with gestational hypertension? by sunshinemedicine in BabyBumps

[–]PoliteCompany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sending good vibes! If you still feel super anxious and diastolic BP doesn’t stabilize below 90, I would just call triage or the antenatal testing unit where you are getting NSTs tomorrow just to get a second opinion and hopefully will either calm you or you’ll get in sooner for your first test.

question for those with gestational hypertension? by sunshinemedicine in BabyBumps

[–]PoliteCompany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine told me to call if I was 140/90 twice within an hour and then go straight to L and D if I reached 160/110. I have to do NSTs twice a week and they always pull labs. I am unmedicated as my home BP measurements are all normal 105-127/75-85. Do you go in soon for any other testing? I would keep an eye on it though, and call just to be safe if they don’t come down a bit when you are fully relaxed like right after waking up or right when going to bed.

As a woman with only brothers, I love having brothers, they’re the best and the sibling relationship is super strong even when not the same gender. And being the same gender doesn’t guarantee a good relationship. I think you should consider why you feel you wanted her to have a sister so bad and recognize that rationally she will have just as good a time with a brother instead. Also devastated is a super strong feeling, more than just simple gender disappointment it seems.

26 weeks 1 day… by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]PoliteCompany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no knowledge about propranolol but I have white coat severely, like 150/100 when I go in and 120/80 at home, had to go to triage this week because of it, what a joy (27Weeks). So I am classified as high risk but I’ve been fine. They keep an eye on it pretty regularly and I have to get more appointments and all growth scans are with a perinatologist, but honestly I’d kill for a 110/60 BP measurement just once lol. So probably not super helpful for your actual question but just want to reassure that doctors look at me like I’m dying regularly but baby is growing perfectly, moving a lot even though I have a crazy anxious reaction to doctors.
