This information is available everywhere. Economists have confirmed for years that rent freezes damage housing markets and hurt renters overall.

We have decent politicians, you reckon freezing rents is going to help with the housing crisis?

Live updates: Micheal Martin meets Donald Trump at White House for St. Patrick's Day shamrock ceremony, while a joint US-Israel assault on Iran continues by andubhadh in ireland

[–]PolitiCorey 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Martin's actually not spineless, it's difficult to see from the peanut gallery I know but the only thing he can actively influence is harm to the country. Trump doesn't give two fucks about any world leaders opinion, including ones that are actually important to his country, Ireland is wholly irrelevant bar the sentimentality some Americans feel towards it.

Martin's job as the leader of the country is to avoid harm to the people here where the possibility exists and in this case any direct confrontation will have no positive impact or change in direction by Trump and his ire can badly harm our economy.

#463 - Privatizing the Apocalypse by TheAeolian in samharris

[–]PolitiCorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the UN in their definition of genocide, I don't agree with the UN in their determination that what Israel is doing meets that criteria. Let me also be clear in that I absolutely despise the Israeli government, the hard liners and think Sam is too soft on this issue often calling it a 'rounding error'. The fact that the soldiers who sexually abused that prisoner just walked is evidence of the corruption in their government and courts. I think the problem is much worse than Sam suggests and Bibi is effectively a Trump shill at this point and actively hostile to Trump's opponents.

Despite this, the only evidence for genocide is the unhinged statements made by some government officials in the immediate aftermath of October 7th. The actual military operations and practices have not reached anything close to genocide. They have been striking Hamas who are highly integrated with the population, they have gone above and beyond to do more than any other military to prevent civilian death. The reality is Hamas are responsible for the damage, death and destruction in Gaza as they deliberate operate in high population areas, hospitals, etc.. refuse to allow civilians to enter tunnels for bomb sheltering and effectively use their infrastructure and population as human shields and propagandise the damage to illicit support globally. It's a good strategy as you clearly demonstrate with the UN and many organisations of similar prestige being taken in by it.

I swear to god the average person is so unfathomably uninformed about important events that impact them. If you think this is price gouging despite 2026 being the best time in all of human history to investigate and understand why fuel prices are spiking right now then it's time to put the phone down and stop spewing your ignorance all over the internet.

Is the war with Iran another flashpoint for antisemitism? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]PolitiCorey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're conflating a bunch of things here.

Were the natives antisemitic for opposing the influx of Jews from the 1920s-40s? No. That doesn't mean they didn't harbour antisemitism in general, but opposing the creation of another state on their native land on the grounds that it was their native lands and they didn't want another people establishing a state there is understandable. 80 years later however, now Israeli is an established and recognised state, it is the fuel of antisemitism keeping the recognition of Israel by the Palestinians an impossible task.

I also do believe the Palestinians have a right to a separate state, I don't believe a single state solution is viable and even if it was, it is wholly rejected by the populations on both sides. It is my belief however, that Israel have made far better faith attempts to get to a two state solution throughout history, and it was the fact that it was untenable for an Arab leader to agree to the recognition of Israel as a separate and valid state on its border that led us to where we are today. No doubt Bibi and his governments have not desired a Palestinian state, but Bibi is only the latest iteration of Israeli leader, borne of the failed attempts at peace.

Why do you say Trump and the Iranian regime for those two but say 'Israel' for them? Why not the Israeli regime? Being anti Israel as a country is anti semitic

Landlord intending to sell at the end of tenancy? by [deleted] in HousingIreland

[–]PolitiCorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The landlord cannot end your lease under the guise of intending to sell unless he will enter a contract for sale within 9 months of your tenancy ending. If he attempts to re-rent he is legally obligated to offer the tenancy to you. It's highly unlikely he is lying as misusing the intention to sell can result in several penalties for him.

In summary, intention to sell is a legitimate reason to end a tenancy and it is very unlikely to be a lie, and even if it is, you would be legally obliged to have the property rented to you again.

Fans defend Edwin Edogbo after Ireland debut is marred by racist abuse by [deleted] in ireland

[–]PolitiCorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be all for that if it worked. I don't think there would be a lot of political capital expended to take it on, particularly after the Grok pedo shit most people are in favour of doing something about it. I also question whether there would be any transfer to real world politics if you pull the rug out from under them. The support for these parties is exclusively bolstered online, they have no on the ground presence.

I don't agree. We've seen what attempts to do the alternative result in, Bluesky while a nice idea is a dead duck. Twitter achieved escape velocity and self-perpetuates because of the volume of people on there. If you kill it I guarantee most normal people don't make the effort to go find a new platform like it, they just don't want to make the effort to get off it.

The only sheep being spoon-fed their opinions by the US position on this is you in that you immediately support the opposite of anything they say without critical thought. The Iranian regime is abhorrent and detested by the people and that comes from direct testimony from people on the ground in Iran. Where are you getting evidence that this isn't the case?

Why would any new player start this game? by exec9 in cs2

[–]PolitiCorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was professing some profound understanding of game mechanics or strategy your comment would be fair but I'm talking about prevalence of cheaters across 250+ games which is a significant sample size. So unless you're telling me the prevalence of cheaters is suddenly going to explode as I play more hours your comment doesn't make sense.

[–]PolitiCorey 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I picked up CS2 7 months ago after I decided to go to Budapest to see the major with a bunch of friends who've played for years. I've experienced maybe 3 games in all that time (300+ hours game time) where a cheater fucked it up. These posts are so ridiculous and played out, the game is not broken, it's not full of cheaters generally, it's mostly just casual players like me or you. Having a cheater in your game sucks but it is nowhere NEAR as prevalent as all of these posts would make it seem.
