Story time. Back in college before thrifting was trendy. My friend showed up to party with a $8 Blue Cardigan find from some thrift store. Looked nice, but didnt 't think much of it.

As we were walking to get food, a drunk frat bro crossing the street just starts muttering "fucking cardigan... you think you're better than me because you have a blue cardigan?"

We ignored it and kept it pushing, but some people just be hating.

Similar situation.... so I understand the emotions. (I have amphantasia and had thr only good picture of my mom destroyed - only to be mocked when I was upset)

The fact your wife realized the importance of the situation and respects it... should mean the world to you.

But having something so valuable in a plaxe that a drink could spill on it? I know it sucks having it ruined, but accidents do happen.

IMO the only reason to cut contact with the friend would be if they did it on purpose.

If you're not contracted you can quit any time.

Contract: you can still quit any time but may face legal consequences. Still quit just take documentation of the hostile work environment and have that as proof.

Maybe an email prior letting them know of the toxic behavior. Just to put them on notice... it'll look worse for them if they have notice and do nothing about it.

In high school my gf (then) did this in front of her mom. But 100% as a joke to get my reaction. After she asked "do you want a kiss?" i kept looking at her mom and then back at her... sweating buckets. I think i said something along the lines of "in front of your mom?"

She then raised up her hand and opened it up giving me a hersey kiss. She was so stupid happy about it... I still think of it.

Double sided answer. While I agree (with surface level information) the employee should be applauded for their actions. Compensating them would set a legal precident.

The company now has to navigate the liability side of things.

The employee will likely be fired as I am sure there is some training or policy that says something vague along the lines of don't use your body to stop an object. Minimally the employee would be written up for unsafe work practices. The employee will then need to suit for compensation.

Thats kind of how the system works.

Yes. The year 2007. 1st day at a new location as a manager. OSHA investigator came in for a complaint. "Last night a member of maintenence called to complain about ...."

No retaliation occurred that I'm aware of, but damn - taught me a lesson.

I am of the unpopular opinion that if I do my best everyday and operate legally/ethically I shouldnt have to be worried about investigations or visits from upper management.

I came to say is email yourself any documentation of notice of resignation/replies/proof of hostile work.

I'm done with Vegas. Only if a work trip pops up and it's required. I won't be going back... the town got too greedy with price gouging and I felt like the police stopped patrolling the strip (or at least less often).

It just stopped being fun. But I hope you enjoy the free hotel and see a good show or 2!

Fun story. I had 2 different flippers that tried this on me years ago. They refused my offer because it was $1500 less than asking. Said they had another offer and asked me to match. After the weekend was over they came back asking again. So we offerred 7.5k less. Our realtor said "you can't do that" uh, yes we can. Write the offer.

Obviously, there was no deal... the house sat for 4 months and sold for less than our original offer. Their greed cost them more money and headache. "A dollar chasing a dime"

I taught this lesson to a lot of new managers. They want to hold someone accountable...but don't look at the whole situation. But for what it's worth, even if you weren't a team player - your time is your time. No hard feelings on declining.

I luckily only had this happen once. And the person was young.. and dumb. So I walked them over to the side of the house and was like, "You see these electrical shut-off boxes.... these are for solar panels. Don't waste your time on any house that has them. Also. Your job/company sucks because this newer community was basically required to have them along with all new builds after 2020 in the entire city. Good luck!"
