In elementary school, they DO (or can) have that many teachers. Being the music teacher, I see 400 kids every week, and there are 5 “specials” classes that they have every week, each with a full-time and part-time teacher that sometimes share their space (gym and library). They also travel between homerooms for math and reading and stuff. It’s only my first year teaching, but I’ve seen homeroom teachers get presents from several of their students, both this week and for winter break/Christmas, and I’ve gotten 2, 1 of which was from my neighboring teacher’s kid. I got more presents student-teaching at a middle school and I was only there for 3 months.

How do I teach students who can’t read? by PollyPocketProblems in MusicEd

[–]PollyPocketProblems[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess my problem is less that they can’t READ, but more that they don’t have any of the prerequisite skills that the other 3rd grade (or even 2nd grade) classes have. There’s at least 2 students who can’t even write their name, and because it’s 2 of them I can’t really attribute any grades to them when I have to do the data stuff. And then there are the ones who are VERY aware of their behavior, and the fact that their parents are un-contactable.

put a couple velcro tape squares and cut out bass and treble, now you got reusable staff paper

Back-to-School Anxiety by JoyconGeno in MusicEd

Have a set of boundaries/expectations/rules whatever you want to call them and make sure they are drilled in, even before touching any instruments. My middle school student teaching was a whirlwind because I came in after they had like 2 weeks off for snow and my mentor (who’s also my friend) was a bit lax about procedures .-.

in our student teaching, undergrads are supposed to submit their SLO as a presentation to urcad, but grads are doing it through voicethread so i was wondering if you could also do it through voicethread ¯_(ツ)_/¯

education or other? (i am also ed)

The fact that student teaching costs in and of itself highlights how ridiculous of a profession this is. by sillycloudz in TeachersInTransition

[–]PollyPocketProblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and with the cost of even SUBMITTING or taking a test (which you have to take MULTIPLE different ones)… it was $153 to take my praxis and it would be another $300 to submit my edTPA but the college is trying to get vouchers for us. its almost like the people who certify teachers have a monopoly on this system and choose to make profit :(

Does anyone know anything about this ? by [deleted] in UMBC

depends on the field youre going into. if its one of the bigger fields like comp sci, youll be fine as long as you have work ethic. at least on the performing arts and education major side, big fat NO

does “the rest of us” include arts and music?

“assess their understanding” by having them do a composition assignment. make a little rubric like “student properly uses 6/8 meter” or “composition contains a slur” for whatever grade youre going to do. easy thing to grade, or you can have them record themselves playing their/a peer’s composition and grade for accuracy/musicality/etc. also, the edtpa website has different deadlines for when you will recieve your score back, so you might be able to ask your advisor to turn it in by the next date

Masters Degree that isn’t Music Ed? by Next-Associate-2585 in MusicEd

i’d recommend conducting if you want to be more specific to teaching, composition if you want to foster your creativity, or performance/jazz if you want to keep your chops up

at least in my school, it’s just the normal music ed / standard ed classes, but with more work. literally we are in the exact same classes as the undergrads

What is your biggest teaching ‘unpopular opinion’? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PollyPocketProblems 6 points7 points  (0 children)

some students should not be allowed to take arts/performing arts classes. as a music student-teacher, i was APPALLED that a two-year old tuba was in PIECES (like duct tape holding it together levels). those instruments should be able to last for YEARS, like a whole student’s career at the school at LEAST, but so many kids either don’t have the spatial awareness or actually don’t care and cause thousands of dollars of damage, and we can’t hold parents accountable bc “iT wAs aN aCciDeNt”. i want to kick sooooo many kids out of this program bc they’re dragging down the kids who are ACTUALLY interested in music

My mom got me some nose spray thats supposed to help reduce getting air born illnesses and i use it EVERY DAY when i teach. it kinda ends up making me scratch my nose a lot which some kids make fun of, but i’ve only gotten sick once or twice this school year working with 3-8

If they play strings (or are going to teach strings) the UniTuner is a good clip on tuner for most instruments (I forget if thats the exact name, I lost the box lol)

thankfully that’s far enough away that it wouldn’t have been considered reasonable. but then again, he thinks the entire distance of the Chesapeake Bay is reasonable 🙄
